video; update: death's weird!
[ Dr. Darling looks like shit. He's managed to put on a button-up oxford, but he buttoned it poorly and they're all askew. He's not wearing a bow tie or a sweater, and his lab coat is also a bit of a mess. Noticeably, he has the making of a black eye, massive bruising on his neck, and small acid burns on the side of his mouth.
He looks jazzed, though. And even though he's tired and beat the fuck up, he's still radiating slightly manic energy. ]
Right. This is important. I've had my femoral artery cut and my neck snapped. I drunk acid and attempted to asphyxiate myself. I even tried to be decapitated. Each of those events should have killed me. None of them did. Which leads to my current hypothesis: something happened to turn off death on the Barge.
‘But Darling, you have a sample size of one,’ wrong, I have a sample size of two. I'm not the only inmate this happened to. Both of us didn't die after we left port, pool to the Nethermere still intact. My going theory is that the Admiral couldn't remove the pool, so he removed death itself.
[ There's a pause before, ] I still need more data, though. If any of you want to try and kill someone, I'd greatly appreciate that! Oh, plan it with them first though, that way we can get a wider range of ways to die that we can get data on.
Does anybody have a gun I can borrow? Also, can anyone in the infirmary do stitches?
[private to Ashton]
You weren't kidding about that acid blood, by the way. That shit packs a punch!
[spam for Varker]
Darling isn't an idiot. He's still slowly bleeding! His femoral artery is bleeding slowly, but still bleeding. Might as well make his way to the infirmary so that he can get this fixed.
His top half is exactly the same as described in his post. But his bottom half? Darling isn't wearing pants. He's just wearing his boxers. His leg is bandaged up, bloodstain slowly growing over the gauze. When he spots Varker, he gives him a tired little wave.
“Hello! Quick question, do you know how to do stitches? I'm pretty sure I need some!”

[ Mild irritation covers the words. ]
You don't seem to be healing. Completely. [ He sees those burns. ] How are you talking?
[ ...Is he a little wary of someone who claims to drink acid and is capable of forming words without a grating voice? Yes he is. ]
Get down to the infirmary. Now.
[ He can stitch, yes. No clarification needed right? But there's also those other signs. As far as the 'order', well the man had asked if anyone in the infirmary could do sutures. So clearly he won't mind... right? ]
audio, public
[ shrugs!!! ]
And I'll get to the infirmary in a bit. I'll need to answer questions first. [ and end up having a thread with Varker when he actually gets there. ] I was asking out of curiosity.

He does look up from the paperwork on his desk with Dr. Darling enters though, can smell the blood on him and his eyes narrow. What in the fresh hell is walking into the infirmary on the one day he's decided to volunteer time?
"I am trained for first aid, yes. Though I can call someone more qualified if it's-" He stands and sees the extent of the damage, eyeing the whole state of him. "Where the fuck are your pants?"
Spam
"The first injury was to the femoral artery. It's in a weird location, we needed easy access."
Varker read the network post, right? At least, Darling is assuming he did.

[First off, it is way too early in the day for Ashton to be up. Second off -- look, she's been nose-deep in a medical textbook for the past three hours, she's checking her direct messages before she checks the network proper; she hasn't seen the post about death yet!]

Plus, some of the ways that death didn't stick didn't involve me. For example, a sharp weapon managed to provoke a minor injury but suddenly became blunt upon trying for a lethal injury.

What the fuck do you think you're doing?

The thing that I don't understand is why didn't the Admiral tell us about this? You'd think 'surprise, death is busted' would be an announcement of note.

You chose the Cleric to do experiments with over me? I had to hear from Cooper, a-and I was going to keep quiet about it, I was going to wait until you talked to me yourself, but you told everyone at the same time, and didn't even think to share what you found with me first?
[How incredibly terrible and thoughtless of you, Dr. Darling.]
Y-you're just as bad as the Infirmary staff... Leave me alone, a-and don't try to call me. I don't want to talk to you.
Private Video
The only thing Darling can think of is that sometimes it's hard to be fifteen. ]
When you feel up to talking, I'd be happy to explain my rationale. I'll leave you alone until then.
[ It's a weirdly clinical response. ]
private
Who told you about this?
private
Technically, I don't know who didn't die. But I trust Shaw. She might be circumspect, but she wouldn't lie.

You're a smart adult, mate. I don't believe you don't know that the idea of being killed makes people scared even when it isn't a rational fear. Come on.
no subject
And I'm not sure what you're trying to prove with that last point. Of course people are scared of being killed. They're scared of a lot of things. But scared doesn't change what happened.

As far as 'having a gun', tragically no. You're going about this all wrong, though; if you're looking for more data, discourage people from experimenting, since it's nearly a given someone will be as contrarian as possible and do it to spite you. Or boast about how you're impervious to being killed, and someone may, again, try it just to spite you? ...those might need to be shelved for next time.
Is there any warden data to see if it's specifically death for inmates that's gone awry? You all do need to have revival requests put in manually, which might be processed differently than our auto-revivals...
no subject
[ so get off his ass, Ghost! ]
Though it's telling that apparently 'appeal to contrarianism' works better than 'ask nicely.'

Re: Private
[ Darling sighs before pointing out, ] I honestly don't see what the problem is. Yes, I could have phrased my request a little bit better. But is this really what we're going to die on? Phrasing? A fundamental aspect of the Barge has drastically changed, who cares about phrasing?

We needed to know this, so thank you for that.
Please don't encourage attempted murder.
[Private]
Is the other Inmate still injured?
Video
[ this blows!!! stop criticizing his methods and saying stupid things like 'please don't kill people.' Attempted murder is FINE, it's not real murder! ]
[private]
As their injury happened a few days ago, I believe not. Don't ask me how they were healed, I don't know that particular answer.

You aren't investigating the cause, you're confirming data that was already well established. You aren't extrapolating anything new, you're just... toying with it. You weren't the first to discover it, but God forbid you aren't the first to announce it.
Audio
And if 'whoops, can't actually die' is well-established, everybody here really has done a terrible job informing the new guy of that.

And if death is messed up - which I believe - attempting to reproduce these results deliberately is a huge risk until we understand more about what's happening.
no subject
[ easy request! ]
I don't see how you're going to understand what's happening without trial and error. Hypotheses and possibilities can only go so far - in the end, you need cold, hard, data.
