Chapter 69 | audio | post-event dated / post-infirmary post
[ John is on audio. Because John is fucking annoyed and his form keeps shifting visibly in ways that even through the communicator might cause a problem since the communicators don't come with the option for 'motion graphic visual content warnings'. ]
Let's address a few things: part one, Christopher Chaos is my inmate, permanently paired as of the end of the last month. I realize people were a little busy then, or might have been dead at the time, but that did happen. If you have previously had issues with him or if you currently have issues slash concerns with him or about him, I would ask you to come to me with them.
Part two: I am aware of the problem with Christopher's consent request and it is being addressed; to be clear, I don't consider it 'valid', as it stands, so everything with that is stopped and I'm working with him on it. I would ask that anyone who has signed a form retract it formally until we deal with the issues with the whole thing, especially wardens. If you want to talk to me about it, talk to me about it.
Part three: if you are a warden who is threatening him with violence, please bring your issues to me instead of to him.
[ John's around; put him where you need him, probably helping with any remaining repairs, cleaning, or work that needs doing. He's not having a very 'nice' timewhich is sad given the number of this chapter. ]

[ private to Jedao and Ghost ]
Darling and Eleven are two of the people I know he trusts and who I know he's done 'experiment' work with. I want to talk to you both about how to make sure these three don't fuck each other up. Or use one another to get around any Admiral restraints we might have to put into place.
[ private to Infirmary staff ]
To be very clear: Chris did not see 'everything' that was discussed, nor did he actually see any conversation between infirmary members about him. I showed him edited pieces of my own discussions with those of you who talked to me to try and help him understand why this line was being drawn and what the line was because you all understand it better than I do and I didn't want to put words in your mouth about your concerns, especially since I might get it wrong. Any personal information that was shared was removed, and nothing that was discussed between you in your group was read by me, let alone shared because I didn't view that as my place to be a part of that discussion at all. I was there to provide information and answer questions so you could make decisions.
To be clear: I do not share personal private communications. Ever. And I certainly don't share anything I'm given access to that I'm not involved in; I don't even read it without being directed to and I consider that something being shared with me and me only. I shared what I shared of this conversation because it was a discussion that was restricted to people involved in the situation, and I should think that Christopher does meet that criteria. I also think that if he'd seen your decision, obviously a response to his posting, without seeing you all trying to understand, he would have taken it even worse. At least this way he saw you all giving a shit about his feelings and believing me about his needs.
I do wish you'd pulled us both in for a meeting to discuss it before doing a public announcement, or at least given him a private message to explain to him that he isn't going to be attacked on sight if he goes to the infirmary [ and his tone says 'don't even try and pretend that's an unreasonable reading of things because have you seen that boy's post ] but what's done is done.
If you have any questions or comments, I'm good to talk.
[ private to Thrawn ]
I've been made aware that your privacy was violated by Christopher while you were down. Do you have any concerns about that you'd like me to look after and do you feel that your specific violation was handled at this point, or does it still need to be individually addressed?
...for what it's worth, I wasn't told about this until it became relevant with my assignment and Christopher's posting.
[ private to Ger ]
You okay?
[ private to Chris ]
I hope you're okay with everything I said. I'm not trying to fight your battles, but I don't want you to feel like you're alone with this. We're a team. I'm with you.

Re: Private
I don't think any warden intends to harm him, or actually intends to threaten him. But I wanted to make it clear given how heated things are.

spam;
When he comes across John next it's in a usual sort of spot, late at night when a lot of ongoing repair work has wound down for the day, and Alexei is sitting on a seat somewhere mid-ship on deck with a lit cigarette in his hand and a couple of extinguished butts on the floor. He's annoyed by it, but something had to give.
He feels the other man's presence like a familiar prickle over his skin and briefly straightens up before leaning forward, bracing his forearms against his thighs.]
If I didn't have a smoke I was going to go insane.
[That's his story and he's sticking to it.]
Re: spam;
[ Either about withdrawing on the call or having a few smokes. You do what you have to do. Very few things are, by themselves, just 'bad' for you. People do things for reasons. Alexei's sanity is as important as his lungs. ]

Secondly, did he think he'd be attacked on sight because of what I said, or because of what you shared without informing us you'd be sharing it? I'm not objecting to your right to share whatever you choose to with your inmate, but if we had known, perhaps we could have tempered our words, knowing our audience included him.
[Private to John]
I don't say anything about someone that I wouldn't be willing to say to their face. However, I would have approached our conversation differently if I knew he might hear you spending several minutes trying to convince me he was a danger and I should worry about him personally. I would have cut off that topic immediately or not broached it at all.
When he responded to me, that was my biggest concern. That hearing that might damage your relationship with him when he deserves that to fall back on.
I hope it didn't. I'd rather see the bad feeling fall entirely on the infirmary staff.
Re: Infirmary filter
[ His discussion with Vincent and his anger in that discussion had a lot more to do with things that Vincent said and did which is why it wasn't addressed here. That's between them. ]

If he doesn't bring up the fact she actively started bullying Chris on a public network post and would happily do it again, neither will she!!]
Want to talk about it? O-or just -- I don't - I don't know, spend some time in companionable and pissed-off silence?
[...fingers crossed they don't sound too eager about that, even if they are.]

audio, very much public
When all of this is blown over and Christopher starts up his research again, I’d be happy to help design a more robust consent form. If there’s one thing being a government employee is good for, it’s knowledge of extensive, thorough paperwork!
[ That form will be 15 pages long. Darling keeps up his light tone as he continues, ]
I can see why the research project would be on pause but for the record, I’d prefer not to retract my form. I’m perfectly fine with Christopher collecting data on me in the event of a coma or death. I trust him and his judgement.
Re: audio, very much public
I'm asking people to retract the form because it doesn't cover all the necessary information and it was collected without certain information being disclosed. Retracting the form will make sure that there's no question in anyone's mind that all consent was given once things were fixed; old forms will actually make things less 'airtight' for him.
It's not a statement on Christopher's judgement. It's helping Christopher to make sure that his intent matches his execution and that neither will be questioned.

[Does she agree, broadly, with the concerns raised in response to Christopher's post? Absolutely. But that was one hell of a pile-on, and the kid is young.]
Or is he someone who will feel used if he is asked to do something to help the community after this, instead of valued?
Re: Audio; Private
I think that once he's in a position to want to do anything, he'll be happy to be busy. And he'll be glad both that people want to work with him and that they're interested in giving him projects.
[ A sigh. ]
I don't want to rush him, but would you mind if I mention it to him, should it come up?

I'm not always the best with young adults. But I know he's struggling. He probably fell back to his science as a comfort while he tries to process everything that just happened. I understand why it sounded everyone's alarms, but it's too bad he has to deal with the brunt of it now.
The timing's difficult, but I'm glad you're his warden, John. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help? I can keep my eyes open for more avenues of research that wouldn't necessarily be as...invasive in nature.
Re: private
I think helping him to understand other people is still a good thing for him; the more people willing to offer their perspectives, the more... 'data points' he has to work from, for instance.
...my goal is to make sure he doesn't do harm, to himself or others. And I agree that he's just trying to work through both his death bringing him here and the events of the last few weeks via something that is, to him, safe and natural and a source of joy.
[ The dip of sound as he dips his head. ]
If you think of something, I'd say offer it; I trust your judgment on what would be a reasonable project, and he is brilliant. He wants to be helpful, to make people's lives better. He's just... learning how that actually works. And not everything is... intuitive. Especially not to people like...
Us.

It's been days since his return. He sits motionless on deck, watching John with a curious, tilted smile.
When people start really irritating John, Trevor closes his wight-blue eyes in bliss.
Nobody told him letting go of humanity could feel so damn good. Chaos and misery are a high he's never let himself indulge in before now.
And the Barge is rife with it.
Re: Spam
What he's feeling is chaos. And John exudes the stuff easily enough, unthinking and unworried. Not harmful by itself, but the same way that he once made Trevor itch, well, now?
"Afternoon, Trevor. Enjoying the deck?"
His tone is even, fond, not bothered at all, really. And given Trevor was watching him, he figured that counted as an invitation.

What's a formal retraction in this case, filing another form? It seems extraneous to make a point of if you're stopping his whole experiment.
no subject
As part of helping make it clear that the forms mean something. And that Chris will abide by them, even in their imperfect state, while we get things cleared up.
It's not an indication that you don't have faith in him. Or that you changed your mind. I'm not telling anyone want to think or want. It's only while we're working on some things.

Re: Audio;
Even if you would never have an issue with how things went, having a faulty form could be used to undermine Christopher. And I'd rather that didn't happen when he's making the effort to do this.
