[ There is a middle aged man in a lab coat having the time of his fucking life. Dr. Darling has only been on the Barge for fifteen minutes and already he's decided that he's never leaving this place. It's an extradimensional space ship run by an extradimensional being that okay, has expectations of him and seems to conform to Earth standard morality, but that only opens up more questions for him to explore! This place is nothing but data! It's fantastic!
But the first step to obtaining data is field observations. Darling can be found all over the Barge, just getting in the way. He's opening any door he comes across (including trying to barge into people's rooms, whoops). He's dropping items off the side of the ship, scribbling on a notepad some field observations as they land in the net. He's talking to the plants including the nonsentient ones because sometimes you've just got to talk to plants, okay? They like it.
Through it all, he's radiating big 'kid in a candy store' energy. This is possibly the happiest person who's ever set foot on the Barge. ]
[ Eventually, he realizes he should introduce himself. Eventually. It's a few hours later.
The camera clicks on to what is undoubtedly an office. There are file folders in the background, sticky notes on a corkboard attached to the wall, posters in the background that are covered up by sticky notes and pieces of paper. Eagle eyed Barge denizens (or nosy nellies) can read a few of the words on the papers. 'Black rock.' 'Hedron.' 'AWE.' Dr. Darling sits at a desk, wide grin on his face. There's a remarkably old looking computer slightly in frame. He's still wearing his lab coat as well as a fun little bowtie and sweater. ]
Hello there my new shipmates! Or, should I say, ahoy there, matey! [ 'Ahoy there, matey' is said with a remarkably mediocre attempt at a pirate accent. He chuckles a little at his own joke, before continuing. ]
I'm Dr. Casper Darling, formerly of the Federal Bureau of Control, now of the Barge. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone—as well as getting to know about the Barge herself. This place is absolutely fascinating. There has to be some sort of invisible yet permeable shield around the deck and the nets, as you can see into space and throw things off the side, but you can still breathe. Isn't that fascinating?
Of course, the alternative is that the Barge has changed us all so that we can breathe in space, but that wouldn't explain the gravity on the deck. Even if we could breathe in space, the moment we step outside, we'd have been flung into the depths. But we're able to walk on the deck, to interact with things in ways that replicate Earth's gravity. And why Earth in the first place? Why doesn't the entire ship replicate the gravity of the moon, or a different planet?
[ You get the impression that this man could ramble on about science, just spitballing about certain topics for days on end. Indeed, Darling looks like he's about to say something else, before he catches himself. ]
But you probably don't want to hear me ramble on like this. I turned on the device for a reason. One, to introduce myself. Two, to ask if there's a linen closet anywhere. I did a little poking around, but I wasn't able to open all of the doors. [ Oh, so he's an inmate. ] The Admiral made my room my office, which I am very pleased about. And I don't mind sleeping on the couch—I've certainly done it before. Long nights and hard work, you know? But it's always a little bit better to have a sheet and pillow, especially if I'm going to be using this long-term.

Casper Darling? I-is that you?

That's me! Have we met before? [ Wait, that might be the wrong question. Darling's eyes widen even more as he asks, ] Will we meet? It only makes sense that time travel might exist alongside dimensional anomalies, but to actually experience it...that would be something else, wouldn't it.

When he approaches the good doctor, he stands to the side, silently observing but its so obvious that he wants to say something and might explode if he isn't addressed soon.
Please, he's trying so hard to be polite!! Notice him and let him make some observations, ask some questions!

"Perfect! Someone who's been here for a while! Or at least, I'm assuming you've been here for a while—though if you're a new arrival, at least it's nice to know it's more than just me. Can I ask you a few questions about the nets? Basic things, nothing too in-depths, I'm still in the field research stage."

I’ve been wondering a lot of the same things. You know if you fling yourself over the side and into the net you can still breathe? Wild, huh? The barrier must extend all the way around!
no subject
Interesting...has anybody managed to go underneath the ship? Fully under, not just on the side. If the barrier's that far, then it would be less of a shield and more of a bubble.

You're from the FBC? Do you know Jesse Faden?
I could try asking the Admiral about changing your cabin, if you'd like? An office can't be too comfortable.
no subject
I do know that name. Is she here? On this ship?
[ Jesse Faden, a candidate for the Prime Candidate Program. Someone who Darling hasn't actually talked with, but who knows very well (the Bureau's a creep and spies on people!)
If she is here...well. He'll have to play this differently. ]

But then the human is just throwing things off the railing for no discernible reason and writing things down, so the obvious solution is for the Knight to toddle over next to Darling on clawed feet that tap loudly on the wooden deck, and stick its head through the lower railing to see where the items are going.]
no subject
A tiny little head poking out through the railing stops his attempt pretty quickly, though. ]
Oh! You'll want to be careful, little guy. I almost beaned you in the head with a pencil.

She had leaned forward, and had her arms clasped behind her, smiling up at the Doctor- even if the lab coat still made her feel a little...twitchy. They always would, thanks to Hojo.
"Don't worry. If you tell them any secrets, I won't ask for them." She told him, offering a gentle tease. Not knowing...well, it could be dangerous to say in front of him.

"I don't know these plants well enough to judge! Besides, I mostly wanted to see how they'd respond. The plants in the Oldest House respond positively to conversation—apparently they respond even more positively to singing, but I haven't gotten around to testing that theory myself."
Everything about Darling's being radiates 'absent minded professor.' The lab coat is clean, but his sweater is a little too big, his bowtie is slightly askew, and he doesn't seem to notice (or care) that his shoes are scuffed with dirt. And, of course, he's happily talking about singing to plants as if that's a proven scientific concept.

Video
She looks delighted by his questions.]
My personal theory is that Earth - and potentially humans themselves - are some kind of anchor point for the Barge, and the Admiral has an easier time reaching universes where one or both exist. The late 20th century to early 21st seems to be an anchor in the timeline, as well. There's really far too many people here from realities where Earth or humans exist, and from that point in Earth's history in general, for it to be a coincidence!
Oh, and you definitely can't breathe in space. Not unless you get space-mead from John. So... please don't try?
no subject
That's what I thought! At least, I thought that Earth had to be an anchor point—just look at the design of the ship! It makes sense that the ship conforms to the vast majority of it's residents' biological needs. The air, the gravity, even something as simple as the distance between steps on the stairwell, all of this is designed to best fit humanity's needs. Obviously the ship would look different if it were a space Barge for...I don't know, snakes or fish.
Speaking as a representative of early 21st century Earth, I don't know whether I should be flattered or worried that the Admiral plays favorites with people like me.

Talking to the plants
no subject
There's someone else here. Darling had been so focused on having a lovely little conversation with this bit of produce that he absolutely didn't notice Sym's arrival. Still kneeling on the ground (because he doesn't want to get up unless he absolutely has to), Darling turns his attention to his new companion.
"I'll make sure to say hello. That way, they won't have to pine for attention."
Based on his big dumb grin, it's obvious that Darling finds dad jokes and bad puns to be one of the highest forms of humor.

Wardrobe bc why not!
But also it's a giant wardrobe, so that's new. And the man standing at a slight counter folding clothes from a basket onto hangers looks up vaguely at Darling's movement, then a quick double-take when he realises he doesn't recognise him.]
Well, you look awfully chipper. [His English accent is strong and cheerful, giving Darling a polite smile.] Not so common for new passengers.

[ Darling gives Arthur a wide smile as he makes his way into the wardrobe. Without any hesitation, he goes to grab Arthur’s hand and give it a firm shake. ]

[The intense voice of the Nine adds:] This room is mine.
[His voice shifts to the low growl of the Six.] Kill him.

Darling frowns a little as the Eleven bounces between voices. That is interesting. And, without fail, he's intensely curious. ]
You know, you're probably the reason why when I first arrived here, someone said 'please don't kill anyone.' Which really, is that something that happens often? Surely we've got to have better coping mechanisms.

You ever hear what they say about doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result?
[She finally asks, looking down at the sheer number of items in the net. Then, without further ado, she vaults over the railing and drops down into the net herself. She picks up the first item her hands find - a library book - and considers it, then reconsiders. She drops it back into the net, picks up a spoon, and hurls it out into space. How's that for fresh data.]
no subject
Based on the wide-eyed, absolutely stoked expression on Darling's face, yes. That is fantastic data. ]
Don't do that again just yet! I want to get down there and see the trajectory with my own eyes, to see at what point the gravitational field ends.
[ Though as he's looking at the railing, it's obvious that Darling doesn't really have any idea of how to get down (or back up, for that matter) aside from 'jump down and hope for the best.' This is a man looking for a ladder or a rope that absolutely isn't there. ]

Let me guess. You're in for experimenting on people, right?
[His tone is casual, but his gaze - with its characteristic SOLDIER glow - is hard. No trace of smile here.]
Re: video
No?
[ Darling's tone and mood are pure what the fuck. Because hey?? What the fuck?? Why would someone suggest that??? ]
First of all, human experimentation would violate paranatural ethics guidelines such as the Ash Act. [ which he already violated but that's for the good of the Bureau, that's different. Plus, nobody was experimented on! ] Secondly, why would I want to experiment on people to begin with? That's barbaric!

no subject
It’s at this point that he notices the chickens as well.
Dr. Darling walks over, gives Lune a little nod, and whether she likes it or not, he starts talking. ]
