Thirty-fifth Song
My wife, Taylor Vauhan-Kiryu, is no longer on the Barge. I've already gone to check on her. She was sent back to her own world, but she's safely on her father's with him and Rags and Trixie now. I brought her hen and her dog to her.
Taylor spent her deal on engagement rings that let us travel between worlds, so she can visit any of you once you leave. I'm not leaving willingly without the other deal she wanted.
And I can't do everything she did, but if the greenhouse needs extra hands, I'm willing. There will be fewer insects on board now that she's not here to control them. Still enough to pollinate the greenhouse plants, of course.
[Private to Angel]
Let me know if there's anything you need.
And she warned me to watch out for you with Valentino here. If there's anything you want to talk about or any protections I can put in place, they're doubly my responsibility. He's assigned to me this month.
[Open Spam, all over the Barge]
There will be fewer bugs going forward because Taylor made sure the enormous insect population would cull itself back to reasonable numbers in her absence. Wasps and hornets exterminate each other. Bees pare themselves back to a good number for greenhouse pollination. Centipede-like creatures keep the spider and moth populations in check.
And Ulla pilots a floating tub of water through the ship, singing wordless spells to break down all of the dead insects and arachnids, cleaning up after their population control. But people may witness the bugs before she gets to them, or intercept her along the way.

Better, now that at least I know she is.

[Hanna's voice is still softer than usual, a little gravely with disuse and he gets winded being too enthusiastic but he has to exercise those new lungs sometime.]
Not exactly in the state to run over and give you a hug, but if you need anything I can give, If Angel does? Let me know.
[Cause he's probably gonna fall apart a little bit about this too, honestly. The only saving grace is shes okay, he can see her whenever he wants to. It'll be fine. She'll be okay and so will he.]
Re: Private
I could come to you. If you want a hug, or anything else.
[Ulla always wants hugs, and today more than most. But she can get them elsewhere if he doesn't.]

Really? Good. I'll read you what she told me about what to expect.
"The wasps and hornets are going to make one another extinct in a few days, the bees will reduce their populations to reasonable numbers, and I have kept enough gu outside my cabin to cull the rest of the ship's excess. It should leave just a small population of mostly moths and spiders, and those needed in the greenhouse for pollination and soil-tending.
The compost system will cease to take care of itself. Written instructions for its care are in the greenhouse shed."
At least the little sea creatures in our cabin were already balanced enough that they can be left alone.

But this young monk will miss her honey and bees. [ These new ones might sting. ]
Re: Audio
I don't know I'd go so far as happy. She's alright, but she didn't choose to leave. She had things left to do and people she didn't want to leave. Still, this is so much better than the last time she was pulled off the Barge.
The bees will still be here. At least some of them. Maybe you can ask for honey at the greenhouse.

Re: Spam
"Come in," she calls. She's on the upper level of the cabin and this is easier than slithering down the ramp. Given the announcement, she assumes this is someone coming to check on her. That's why she left the door unlocked for convenience.

[ But he knows how hard won that kind of partnership was for them; he knows the vacuum it can leave behind. ]
...How would you feel about meeting in the Enclosure, when you have time? I can show you the Lucidian Ocean.

[Soft and sad and grateful:] Yes, please. Would you like an underwater breathing spell?

You know what? Respect.
Marc raises one eyebrow as she goes by floating and singing, gives her a nod, and will check in on her later when she's done with ... whatever the heck this all is.
He'll knock on her cabin door, actually. Hi.
Re: spam
Not quite a full fishbowl, Ulla has her head and shoulders above the surface. But close enough. She has a modified wheelchair too, but Ulla likes this better. It's an excellent reprieve from slow slithering.
She offers Marc a wave in passing.
And she's up on the balcony with her harp when he turns up at the door, calling down, "Come in!" rather than getting up to answer the door. It's quicker that way, and a lot of people are dropping in to check on her this week.

[He knows they've never been particularly close, but he also knows what it's like to lose a spouse from this place. And he knows he shouldn't just assume a person's got enough support.]
Re: Private
I don't tend to need help. Anything I need, I can handle on my own.
I married Taylor knowing that I'll outlive her and spend centuries missing her someday. This is only a small fraction of that, if far sooner than I'd like. The point has always been to let myself have something better than need, for as long as I can hold onto it.

What do you need, Ms Ulla?
Re: Video
Just Ulla is fine, unless that's harder. My people don't really use titles, except for royalty.
I wouldn't mind company. Or a hug?

Are you okay, Ulla?
I still have her flight suit.

She'll be missed. I'm glad you were able to get her where she's supposed to be, even if you couldn't bring her back here.
Need any help on bug cleanup duty?

I can do that. Singing is more efficient than sweeping.

No. She needed one more deal, and there were two people here she wanted to see safely graduate before leaving.
She would never leave willingly without talking to me about it first, either.
