Chapter 39 | video
[pre-discovery]
[ Given that he spends most nights in with a partner, that he spends as much time as he can perched or curled up with or in the pocket of a partner, and that he welcomes as much touch as he can get... it takes him until someone else figures it out, probably, before he knows How Warming Up Works. In the meantime, you can find him in his usual spots, some of his funk from the unpairing settled out: the library, the commissary, his cabin, Arthur and Sheehan's cabin, and up on the deck, though he's less in the greenhouse and more experiencing the snow for himself, considering. ]
[post-discovery]
[ Once John knows what's going on? ]
Hey. [ It's just him, in his usual clothing, today's suit a warm gambouge with a rich brown sheen. ]
If anyone needs contact, I can change into a variety of creatures to be unobtrusive or help if you feel weird touching people. I don't need to talk or bother you. And I don't need to sleep, so I'm available if anyone needs it at any time. Just... offering.
[ And John will be haunting around the ship poking in to make sure people aren't freezing or might need to warm up, in a variety of shapes.Click the one you want. ]

Uh... hi. I don't think we've really talked since I ate someone for you.
Are you up for meeting up? Do you need anything right now? A-are you okay with the cold?
...I'm John, by the way. There was also the ice cream, way back. Same person, if that wasn't clear.
...I assume you're all right with this one.

Cat
There is also a sign around his neck.
Hi, my name is John. I'm a warden. You can pick me up or pet me to get warm.]
Re: Cat
But they are cold. There's no escaping that.
Easy to clumsily sit themself down besides the cat and rest one arm lightly on his back, scratching behind his ears. Easy to not say a word. (Sometimes the loss of being able to take other shapes, other forms, hits harder than others. It'd be so easy to touch other people if they didn't have to be a person as well.) If the option is provided, why not take advantage?

This one is a familiar shape, and a colour that reminds him fondly of Tara. He's coming up from behind, John, so doesn't immediately read the sign.
"Oh, hello," he says, in the soft sing-song way people do when talking to an animal. "And who are you, handsome devil? I haven't seen you here before!"
Gale moves round in front of John, and spots the sign just as he's holding out a hand in greeting.
Ah.
"... Oh, gosh, I'm so sorry! Not that you don't make a very handsome cat, of course, I just -- err..."
Potentially not appropriate language? For talking about a warden?

Snake
Hi, my name is John. I'm a warden. You can pick me up or pet me to get warm. ]
Re: Snake
So his eyes lit up when he saw a familiar golden snake slither through the greenery. ]
Noble snake John!
[ In record speed cold hands scooped the snake up and settled him on the monk's shoulder like their first time meeting. Oh, that was so much better, Wu Xin's fingers were already feeling a little less stiff. ]

Dog
Hi, my name is John. I'm a warden. You can sit next to me or pet me to get warm. ]
Re: Dog
She's rubbing her own arms as she walks up on Deck, trying to think of who to contact on her lunch break, when she sees the dog with the sign. "Hi, John the warden. I think I saw you on the network earlier. How'd you know goldens are my favorite type of dog?"
She takes the opportunity to sit next to him and seems to automatically reach for his head to scratch behind his ears.

Re: Dog
Despite having been aboard the Barge for nearly a year, her first thought when she spies the golden retriever amidst the snow drifts on the deck isn't 'shapeshifter'. It's something more akin to puppy, and her gaze flicks up, searching for any accompanying human before she approaches slowly, unearthing one hand from her pocket to offer her fingers to sniff.
"Hello, gorgeous," she says, low and calm, and warmer than most people wandering around on two legs are likely to ever get from her.
That might be slightly embarrassing in a moment, when she gets close enough to read that sign.

Mouse
All the same, there is still a sign:
Hi, my name is John. I'm a warden. You can pick me up or pet me or even put me in a pocket to get warm.]
Re: Mouse
"Youre going to get stepped on, you know," he says, kneeling down and sprinkling snow playfully on the little mouse.

Then he notes the sign, reads it and breaks into a delighted smile.
"John! That's you? Did you learn this one from Ulla?"

The weight of some...creature on his shoulder, coupled with the sudden influx of warmth through his body confirms that this is a person. He turns to greet the interloper, only to be momentarily taken aback.
That is very clearly an infant night dragon]

Re: John (slightly different)
She was making a round of the ship looking for people who might not seek out heat and comfort, which doesn't apply to John, of course, but she hates the cold enough that she can't resist reaching for him.

The snow.
[Sure she had her sweaters, her jackets, but she didn't want those. Instead, she sought out the cold on deck, and the snow. It was...quite pretty out here.
But seeing John on deck, she moved to stand with him, moving to place a hand on the railing. Funny. She thought it'd be colder.]
I always liked it when the weather changed on ship. It could be miserable, but at least it was something less...monotone.
Re: Pre discovery
[ John's inclination is always to touch her, so it's no wonder that he slides a tentacle around her waist and leans a little against her shoulder. Being with her always feels warm, so he doesn't really notice anything. ]
I'm excited.
I like to knit but there's usually not much of a reason to give anyone knit things. I know what I'll be doing for the next few evenings.

Private
[Archly:]
Yes, darling, I'm very much accustomed to exchanging various degrees of physical intimacy for my continuing safety.
[A beat, and the tone vanishes with a faint chuckle.]
I know that's not what you meant. You're right, I'll be fine.
Re: Private
I asked the Admiral incidentally. And he did tell me neither of us did anything wrong. So I hope you're not doing the thing where you think it was you.

Private
[She's wrapped in some blankets in a common room, her teeth chattering slightly. Obviously heat wasn't a problem after the spiders came, but she remembers a winter or two, when she was small, when the heating went out. She remembers waiting, bundled up in her mother's arms, too cold to sleep, waiting for her mother to say it was morning, and they could go to the library.
She doesn't want to think about that. The barge has been through the ringer, and something's conked out - normal enough.]
You got hot chocolate, maybe?
Re: Private
Are there any foods you like? Something maybe... spicier or different than you'd get at the dining hall?
