[It's some short time after dinner when Lark switches subtly from light banter to a serious question:]

If I ask, will you tell me honestly how things are with B now?

What happened to the band--or was it bands?--we had on board?

[Lark spends some extra time swimming, or wandering the halls. He avoids animals more studiously than he usually does, to the point he won't walk in the same hall if you have a pet.

He also lingers in the gym, working out obviously, but watching everyone else more than he pays attention to his own routine.

And when he ends up on the deck, where he's always sung before, he sings sea shanties without the benefit of any instruments.]

[Tiffany is working on chin-ups when he comes in, though it's not long before she drops down to the mat for a rest, back against the wall and legs stretched out in front of her. When she sees him watching, she curls a bicep at him, mock showing off. Sup, Lark.]

[He grins at her] I thought we banned guns from public places.

I take it you're enjoying the gym as it is?

As opposed to what?

As opposed to having a personal trainer. And a remodeled space.

[Huh. She looks around the room, considering the idea.]

Nah, it looks okay like this. I made an obstacle course from Hange's world in the Enclosure once, though.

[Steve, fortunately, is good at changing gears.

He unfortunately just... isn't sure it's something he can sum up easily, but he tries:] They're - pretty good, honestly?

[And then,] He yells at me for stuff all the time.

[Which is, frankly, a relief.]

[Thanks to his own relationship, it doesn't even occur to Lark that yelling could be anything but a good thing. Which is why he laughs]

Good. Someone needs to, and I can't risk going hoarse being the only one to do it.

I want to go camping with you. And him. He probably hasn't done anything but survival training in the woods, I haven't really stretched my legs in a while, and you need some mountain air.

[Steve just rolls his eyes, but he does actually take the request that follows seriously.

You realize the mountain air is fake, [he puts in, but honestly, the other two points? They seem reasonable enough.]

I mean... sure. I don't mind. If he doesn't mind. I don't think he will, but I can't say for sure until we ask him. Are you thinking just overnight?

[He hopes that someday, Steve will be as sure of his friendship with Bucky as he used to be. At the very least, Steve should know that B does want him around even if the specifics get blurry]

Yeah, just a night. Just a practice run for if the admiral ever gives us the chance to camp on a real mountain.

Besides if we stay out too long you'll both end up looking like cavemen and no one needs that.

[It's not that Steve wants to second-guess Bucky. He doesn't. It's just that he finds it a little hard to feel particularly endeared to him when it's clear he doesn't remember most of their lives together. Without that, he's just some guy that happens to know a lot about Bucky's past. But he's more than happy to offer up anything he knows, if it helps. And he's more than happy to have the chance to try to be deserving of his friendship, this time around.]

Well, at least we know he wouldn't leave us behind.

Hey, we're not the ones who grow hair on demand, [he points out.

And then,] Buck said Iris bugs him to play with her sometimes. As a wolf, I mean. I think that's real nice of her.

[Thomas comes out on deck in time to hear Lark start singing Barrent's Privateers. He waits until the first chorus before joining in, grinning as he does.]

[Having a second voice bolsters Lark and he grins, sings louder, slings his arm over Thomas's shoulders]

[Thomas, in turn wraps one arm around Lark's waist, partly to keep his balance. When they're done singing, he laughs and hugs Lark.]

Where did you learn those?

B has seen people perform on stage, and seen people sing along to music already playing, but this is the first time they've seen anyone singing, alone, just for the hell of singing. He loiters in the stairwell up onto the deck, just barely visible, watching and listening.

Lark can probably tell he's there, though. Werewolf and all. Also, he's not exactly hiding, just not making his presence obvious.

Lark sings on for another couple of songs, and when he trails off at the end he gets some water from a bottle near the entrance.

"Good evening, B."

"Hi, Lark," he says back, and finally inches a little further out onto the deck, since he's being welcomed and all. He hesitates, then adds, "Your singing was good."

He's getting better at saying when he likes things, but, well, sometimes it's easier to fall back on a complimentary fact.

"Thanks," he grins. "I take requests, if you've got one."
