hey guys

just wanted to let you know I'm the new mod, so we won't have the same problems with moron posts.

but of course, we haven't had *any* posts since... 2004? And that was only six posts all year. So I'm definitely wondering if we need to even bother. So what I'm thinking that if activity doesn't pick up (and that means positive activity, not the crap we saw in the last week or so) I'm just going to delete the community.

So if you've been waiting for a reason to post about Lance.... now's the time!

'N Sync star Lance Bass spent a morning with a group of Jenison fourth-graders after presenting the students with a first-place award this month for their design of a hypothetical space station module for him.

"It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance," said Rachel Ratliff, 9, who thinks Bass was very cute.

"I had to click it in my mind so I wouldn't forget -- it was so amazing," said Emily Ambs, 10.

Cutest thing ever.

Fourth-graders space lab rockets to first place

....After brainstorming and doing a lot of research on space travel, the students designed a two-story space lab that featured 18 rooms, including a communications room, a science lab, a room for Bass' dog, Jackson, a game room and a dance floor with a floating disco ball. There also was a recording studio, an exercise room, and a bedroom closet filled with designer space suits.

The exterior of the lab featured solar panels in the shape of bass clefs (because Lance sings bass), lasers, heat shields, satellite dishes, a shuttle dock and an escape pod.

The students decided the lab's exterior should be shaped like a limo.

"You know Lance Bass, he's a celebrity. He's got to have a limo," said Taylor, 9.

Judd, Paisley and Bass to perform at Amory benefit concert
Associated Press

AMORY, Miss. - Country singers Wynnona Judd and Brad Paisley and N'Sync's Lance Bass, of Clinton, are scheduled to be part of a concert to raise money for scholarships for Mississippi students.

Stars over Mississippi will be held at the Amory High School football field on Oct. 2.

Also slated to participate as hosts are television actors Tony Danza and Patricia Heaton from the popular sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond."

"The 2004 concert marked the 12th anniversary of the Mary Kirkpatrick Haskell Scholarship Foundation, and it promises to be our biggest show ever," said Sam Haskell III, executive vice president for William Morris Agency, Inc. in a statement.

Haskell, an Amory native, started the concert and scholarship foundation in honor of his mother who was a public school nurse in Amory for 20 years. The concerts are held every two years and have raised close to $3 million in scholarship money.

"The scholarships are for young people who attend publicly supported colleges and universities in Mississippi," said Steve Greenhaw, who heads the patron program for the foundation.

The foundation has awarded more than 150 Mississippi students, primarily from the Monroe County area, with approximately $350,000 in scholarship money, Greenhaw said.

Past stars participating in the event have included Whoopi Goldberg, Ray Romano, Brooks & Dunn and Dolly Parton.

Tickets for the concert will be available April 1 by calling 1-800-689-2190. Reserved tickets will be $30 and general admission tickets will be $20.

Lance visits school in Houston

Bass encourages math, science in students
Thu Oct 9,10:42 AM ET

By JUAN A. LOZANO, Associated Press Writer

HOUSTON - After a highly publicized failed attempt last year, 'N Sync (news - web sites) singer Lance Bass (news) still hopes to one day fly and work in space.

And if a group of Houston middle school students has any say, Bass will do it in "Lance's Lab" while dining on chicken strips with salsa, wearing stylish pants and T-shirts and listening to and recording music as a way to combat motion sickness.

On Wednesday, Bass visited Ortiz Middle School in southeast Houston as a part of events celebrating World Space Week, which commemorates the Oct. 4, 1957 launch of Sputnik 1, the first human-made satellite, and the Oct. 10, 1967 signing of a treaty that governs exploration and peaceful uses of space.

"Just stick with math and science and dream big," Bass told nearly 40 students after listening to a presentation by a group that proposed a lab design in which the pop singer could research whether listening to music would be a good way of relieving the stress that comes with long duration spaceflight.

The designs for "Lance's Lab" are part of a national competition in conjunction with World Space Week, which is held each year from Oct. 4-10 after a 1999 declaration by the United Nations (news - web sites) General Assembly. Bass, a space enthusiast, was recruited to promote the importance of academics to students when it comes to space travel.

Bass, 24, also told students about the rigorous training he underwent last year while attempting to secure a ride aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the international space station (news - web sites).

He would have been the youngest person ever in space, but had to cancel his plans to fly last October after failing to raise the estimated $20 million fare. A year ago, he was in Houston, training at NASA (news - web sites)'s Johnson Space Center.

"The training is very difficult, very physical," Bass said. "There is also a lot of psychological training. Living in space is difficult because it takes place in a very small (area). You can't be claustrophobic. You also have to learn a lot about the science of rockets."

One student asked the singer if he feared being abducted by aliens if he went to space.

"I'm not scared of any aliens," Bass responded as students burst into laughter. "If there are aliens, I think they'll be friendly."

'N Sync singer to jump Inland

01:19 AM PDT on Thursday, October 2, 2003
By SHANNON STARR / The Press-Enterprise

LAKE ELSINORE - Pop star/cosmonaut Lance Bass will make a tandem jump Friday over Lake Elsinore.

The 12,500 foot jump will be made with the U.S. Army Parachute Team the Golden Knights. Bass' orientation begins at 11 a.m. and the jump is scheduled to take place at 1 p.m.

The Golden Knights have performed in all 50 states and in 47 countries, according to a news release. Annually the team performs more than 27,000 jumps before an estimated 12 million people.

Ninety men and women make up the team, which takes celebrities and notables on the tandem skydives as part of its demonstrations. In a tandem jump, the celebrity is attached to an experienced skydiver by a harness. The novice jumpers must attend a training session before the jump, said Staff Sgt. Mellissa Novakovich, spokeswoman for the Golden Knights skydiving team, based at Fort Bragg, N.C.

The fall from 12,500 feet will reach speeds up to 120 mph, according to the release.

Bass was named 2003 youth spokesman Oct. 4 through 10 for Space Week International, a United Nations program.

The 'N Sync singer spent several months training at Russia's Star City and at Johnson Space Center in Houston to be part of a Russian crew that would fly to the International Space Station. Bass lost his seat on last October's flight after negotiations for the financing of his trip fell through.
