Well, I lost the most recent
Rumic World quiz. Looks like I'm not the ultimate fanboy I thought I was. However, I did get all the answers right, but someone else just submitted their answers sooner than I did.
Speaking of Rumiko Takahashi...
I just got the
Mermaid Forest boxed set in the mail. I absolutely loved the manga, and the anime is pretty good too. Don't let the title fool you. This isn't
The Little Mermaid. You see,
Mermaid Forest is a dark and violent story. In this series, eating the flesh of a mermaid can grant you immortality, but most of the time it either kills you or turns you into a horrible immortal monster. The story follows a 500-year-old immortal, Yuta, and his teenaged-but-also-immortal companion, Mana, as they search for a mermaid who can make them mortal again. Along the way, they encounter others who have also used the mermaid's flesh, but ended up with far worse fates.
It's only 13 episodes, but they're all pretty good. My only real complaint about the anime is that they watered down the blood and violence a lot. The exception is the DVD-exclusive story
Mermaid's Scar which stays faithful to the manga, and is thus much more violent than the other episodes. One of the best things about the anime is that it's in widescreen - I don't know why they made a TV series in widescreen, and I don't really care either. I'm not going to question it because widescreen is awesome.
Overall, this is one of the more faithful anime adaptations of Rumiko Takahashi's work. I would say only the
Maison Ikkoku anime is more faithful.
Ha, yeah. No one really wants to listen to me review an anime I like.
