Martian / Eden dialect is under #eden conlang

Future English / COI dialect is under #coi conlang

New word: soss

Etymology: SOS squished down and shifted around. Started as a call to help a damaged or stranded ship to the help itself, and then the help grew more and more connotations of obligation, and then people started using it to describe individual acts.

Meaning: Something like obligation, something like “well what was I supposed to do, NOT step in?” An act of assistance, charity, or goodwill that is so mandatory that the person doing it didn’t even think to do anything else.

Picking up a child who fell is soss. Dragging someone out of an accident site is soss. An Edenite giving their firstborn son to the brothers is soss. Grace giving Simon food or water could be described as soss, if Grace had the vocabulary for it.

loving the idea of acronyms and abbreviations being fed into the language evolution and coming out the other side with new connotations!

i think SOS is an excellent example of that because it's something that would've been in common use / knowledge among people learning to communicate past a language barrier. and it's giving very militaristic, morse-code, signal-transmitter-speak vibes which i can see the COI using for cross-station communication. SOS moving from a request to an obligation is a very plausible trail of thought!

i also kinda like the idea of it being a concept that transcends the language barrier between Eden and the COI, in that it's one of those rare shared words between them that's maybe just pronounced or written differently. from Eden's perspective, "soss" is something reserved for sacred or familial obligation, because you should place your loyalty nowhere else; for the COI, it's more of a moral obligation, about doing the right thing no matter who's on the receiving end of your help, because they're so big on justice and community and rehabilitating convicts who killed ¼ of the remaining population lol. they're more righteous about it whereas Eden is more sacrificial.

and for Grace, i think definitely Simon would consider it strange that he's given so much stuff so freely out of sheer goodwill, because Grace has no "soss" towards him as a stranger (nor as a fellow brother of Eden), and the COI's definition of it doesn't typically include comfort and amenities such as valuable resources given without a fair trade in return (labour, information, etc) in Simon's experience with them. it may be "soss" for Grace to save his life rather than let him die for no reason, but that's the extent of what he owes him. Simon might feel like he hasn't "earned" that "soss" yet in terms of being given food and water, because the concept of basic human decency has changed a lot in the universe he comes from. if Grace knew the definition of the word, he would definitely argue that meeting Simon's basic needs is "soss" to him, because why wouldn't he???

thank you as ever for the ask! sorry i took a while to get to it

Iron Lung screencap redraw

Got carried away and made what was supposed to b a quick thing into a 2hr study. I’ve been getting worse at drawing from sight so I’ve been banished back to the basics.

Simon being tactile / self-soothing

most noticably, his repetitive circling motion with his thumb over his empty knife holster (which he often touches for reassurance in a kind of muscle-memory reaching for a weapon that isn't there)

then his light tracing of the map, brushing his fingers over it to situate himself, and just the delicate way he handles everything in general, like he's trying hard not to damage anything

he's also very physical, a visual learner, using his hands when gesturing directions

when he finds the Eden pendant he ties it around his wrist to keep it secure, but he also holds it enclosed in his palm. he keeps it tight in his fist under his thumb. part reverence part anchor to home

and when he's stressed he makes fists and fidgets with his hands / the pendant. he sort of punches his own hand, makes pressure, like a tiny contained form of lashing out and hitting things (which we see him do at other high-stress points of the movie); this is how he regulates his emotions to divert that urge. he also bows his head to the pendant in his hand like he's praying to it. maybe hoping it'll bring him luck, like a kind of talisman

Mark 'Markiplier' Fischbach as Simon 'The Convict' Iron Lung (2026) dir. Mark 'Markiplier' Fischbach

I wonder if this is how he sat in the back of that COI shuttle after Filament, wondering what was gonna happen to him while they were taking him up to the tow ship. Damn.

This is another one of my favorite shots because Simon is backed into a corner here, which is a great way to see how a character operates at their core, and he is displaying that shut-down behavior I keep talking about.

EDIT: @spunfromthesheep pointed out that he's fidgeting by punching into his own hand.

Would Simon like trees?

If The Last Tree is truly the one point of reference for him - interconnected with Eden's religion and maybe the iconography of their God - Simon's general feelings towards trees would be a mixed bag. Twofold if he had a part in The Last Tree's decline and eventual death. If Eden was an agrarian society, where the success and livelihood of all people depended on crop, I suspect The Last Tree would be held above this - cultivating the tree is ultimately different than general farming. It does not provide any nutritional value. Even as a maple tree, its chance of creating enough sap to produce syrup is questionable.

For Simon, there would be reverence maybe, when faced with trees again. Something instinctual and taught that doesn't fully go away with time. Lingering ideals of a faith he might not have fully prescribed to, but lived through, and at the very least, does not like to discuss anymore. Lightly, trees are a part of a past he no longer associates with.

i love your use of colour and how you draw simon, you capture his features really well! saw you asked for some art ideas, maybe some eden / little simon could be cool? i think about his childhood and mars and his mama all the time ;(

Avatar

hi, thank you!!... and now i think about them, too :(

i found very little about simon's childhood before Eden, so i guessed that before the Quiet Rapture, he had a pretty normal life as a kid with his mother and other kids on Mars... which makes his whole story even sadder, knowing that he joined the cult at the very young age :(

(idk how bad light pollution would be on Mars after the colonization, but we can always imagine them going to the planetarium)

Avatar

HAHA welcome aboard the mars cultural exploration lol i LOVE what you did here Simon stargazing with mama is too precious. with how little we know about his childhood anything is possible, it's what led me into making up a conlang for Eden / Martian and other Mars culture world-building, it's so much fun.

also, Simon looking just like his mom.... excuse me while i go cry in a corner... he has her hair and her sweater and her nose... oh my god...

big fan of how he's just stick bug stancing with his lil dagger, and curling up over his knees (holding his ARM by the way, foreshadowing??). this is everything ive ever wanted

Art inspired by @ctrl-shift-alt-9 's post about Simon seeing purpose in his work as the butcher, and the lighting on the blood resembling stars.
