One

"I just think it'd be gross," Danny says. "Like, big ole...dude mouth and stubble and stuff? Sick." He wrinkles up his nose and screws up his dumb little pig eyes, shivers a little like he's for real disgusted.

It's idiotic, but then it's Danny, so. Adam just smiles, slow and lazy, not even bothering to lift his head. "Each their own," he says, peaceably, and closes his eyes.

"Speaking of kissing," Matt says, in a change-this-subject kind of voice, but Danny rides right over him, oblivious.

"'Cause no, but," he says. "I think that's part of your guys'es problem. The gay rights thing. I think it's easier to get it when it's lesbians because everybody knows it's nice to kiss ladies, but gay guys we just do not get. Because of the gross factor. You know. Because kissing dudes is gross."

The thing that's saddest about Danny Gokey is that he actually has no idea there's anything wrong with what he's saying. He thinks he's being helpful right now. He thinks he's giving Adam (the gay emissary) important intel to bring back to gay headquarters: this just in -- normal people are grossed out by the dude kissing! Adam takes a breath, then closes his mouth and lets it out again, frowning. He has no idea where to even start.

Kris stirs in his spot at the other end of the couch, tugs his ipod's headphones out. "I've kissed guys," he says. "It isn't gross."

Adam smiles and then actually hears what Kris said and stops smiling, propping himself on an elbow so he can look at Kris. Kris is looking at Danny, though. His face is all polite interest, all innocent lifted eyebrows and pleasant smile.

"No you have not," Danny says.

Kris shrugs and nods. "I kissed my friend Ben when we were fourteen because we thought we should practice before we asked any girls out. And then there was this thing at Katy's college where the Gay-Straight Alliance was doing a kiss-in on the quad? And there weren't enough guys so Katy recruited me to kiss one of her friends. It was kind of nice, actually. He was pretty good at it." He frowns down at his ipod again, tapping his way back into his playlists and picking out a new one. If Adam didn't know him as well as he did, he might have missed the little smile at the corner of Kris's mouth, might think Kris was oblivious to the sudden silence in the room.

"Eyaaaaah," Danny says eventually. "You're totally lying."

Kris shrugs and doesn't look up from his ipod. "No, I'm not," he says.

Danny nods a bunch of times, grinning like he and Kris are sharing a joke. "Yeah, you are," he says.

Kris sighs. He thumbs his ipod off and winds the headphones around it and sticks it in the front pocket of the hoodie he's wearing, then lifts his eyes to Adam's face, gives him this questioning look.

Adam lifts his eyebrows. Kris nods once, like come on, yes or no?, and it would be cute except Adam has no idea what he's asking. He tries to get this across with a tiny headshake and a slight widening of his eyes. Kris sighs like Adam's being stupid and then gets up on his knees on the couch and crawls up Adam's body until he's braced over Adam with a hand on either side of Adam's head where it's resting on the arm of the couch and Adam has maybe a second in which to get it, suddenly, and widen his eyes the rest of the way, before Kris lowers his head and kisses him.

He's not messing around, either: he presses their lips together, tilts his head a little and does it again, soft and wet, licking into Adam's mouth. Adam lets his eyes fall closed and kisses back (because come on), and Kris puts a hand on the side of Adam's face, thumb brushing over Adam's cheekbone, fingertips pushing into Adam's hair. He pulls back slowly and then ducks in for one more quick nip at Adam's bottom lip before he sits back on his heels and beams at Adam like they just did something hilarious. "Totally not gross," he says.

Adam huffs a laugh and curls his hands into fists to keep them from touching his mouth all wonderingly like somebody in a romantic comedy. "Oh, thanks," he says, but it doesn't come out nearly as sarcastically as he'd meant it to. He makes a face at Kris to make up for it and Kris laughs and pats his shin.

Danny stands up and smooths his hands over his belly and shakes his head. "Duuuu-uude, what the heck?" he says, and he's trying to joke around but Adam can tell he's weirded out for real. He opens his mouth and then closes it, shakes his head again and wanders away.

Number 1: "Okay, two minutes," Megan says, messing with Matt's watch, and everybody laughs breathlessly, a little drunk, crowded around Adam and Kris in the middle of Megan's stupid pink bedroom, watching.
