*sigh*

Because I'm watching my blood pressure (well, not really, but getting livid is bad for your health), and really can't be assed to write a formal takedown of the torrent of pseudo-science, I'll just tell you that Psychology Today has an article of bullshit ("politically incorrect truths", but I didn't want to give it a good google keyword). I'm sure the tidbits all were pulled from reasonable studies, but taken well out of context and warped for good measure.

If you want to get yourself all worked up, go ahead and read it. I'm going to go sear some portabello mushrooms for dinner.

Feminist Sci-Fi/Fantasy for Kids

When I worked with kids, I would frequently get requests for book recommendations, especially selections that showed strong female characters. Sometimes the parents or kids requested science fiction or fantasy themes.

Here are some of the books I recommend which have female heroines, interesting plotlines and a lack of emphasis on romantic relationships. What are yours?

Note on age: I made the age ranges huge because I usually worked with blazingly smart kids and so my own experience is probably skewed relative to "everyone else." All are chapter books though; the age recommendations are thus more based on thematic elements than literary difficulty.

Somewhere in the back of my brain, I have fond memories of a book about a girl who has magical glasses which change the way she sees the world. I think it enabled her to see the future, or perhaps secrets. Unfortunately, I haven't seen it since I was about seven, despite my searching. Does that short summary strike anyone as familiar? The cover (at least the late-eighties-to-early-nineties edition) was of a girl's face and large eyeglasses with rainbow lenses.
