I posted today so I could talk about all the anonymous fics I wrote for end of year fests that are finally revealed!
Total fics, art or podfics posted in 2019: 45
2019 Total Word Count: 181k
Fests participated in during 2019: hp_darkarts Anti-Valentine's Fest, draco/ron fest, hpkinkfest, growing-neville fest, hpconsentfest, draco tops harry, hd_fan_fair, hpdaddyfest, daily_deviant, hdowlpost, hd-erised, hd-wirelss festive minifest, rarepair-shorts
Favourite work: Thunder (Draco/Harry, 21k, Explicit)
I wrote this for Erised, a fest I’ve practically drooled over since I learned of its existence. It’s more angsty and dramatic and has actual PLOT? And I kept saying while I was writing it, that it’s the best thing I’ve ever written.
Work you're most proud of: Risks worth Taking (Draco/Harry, 18k, Explicit)
The beginning starts off a little funky, but I really loved the prompt, and the way their story progresses throughout. It’s got a lot of ups and downs, and fear and hesistation and I’m just really proud of myself for capturing it all. Plus it has a cat, Marzipan, who I love and adore.
Your most under-appreciated work: Everything to Lose (Draco/Harry, 15k, Explicit)
I was really proud of my concept here. Master of Love is something I’d been thinking about for a while, and I really liked the notions in that fic about love and moons and meet-cutes. I really REALLY love this fic, and it definitely came out to lackluster results. I think it was because of the fest, the timing, and wish I had posted it on my own. Also the sex was not really well written, which could have been why this feels like my biggest fail of 2019.
Your most over-appreciated work: Tending the Flames (Draco/Harry, 6k, Explicit)
I wrote this fic while eating sushi 20 minutes from my home, on a random prompt from a friend, and its my most read fic. 35k reads. It’s...I barely spent a day on it, and I don’t know how that happened.
Favorite title: Last Christmas (I gave you my cock) (Draco/Harry, 4k, Explicit)
I wrote this for my bff, Jay, and came up with the title weeks before I wrote the fic. I love it. Makes me sing in my head each time I see it on my dash.
Least favorite title: The Sun, The Heat (Neville/Draco)
Just a boring title, tbh. I wanted to write more of this and I just...didn’t.
Most unsuitable/funniest working title: HARRYS GOT A BIG COCK IN THIS ONE - as if he doesn’t all the time...and that turned into Quite a Big Mission You’ve Got There, which, now that I look at it, doesn’t sound grammatically correct.
Weirdest thing you had to research for a writing project: For Everything to Lose, I actually google mapped the exact house I wanted to use. I think I did that for Risks as well. But the weirdest was the cock cage tutorial videos...
Project that was the most difficult to write: Erised, Thunder for sure. There’s a lot of pressure there, both self-inflicted and fandom-wide, and I felt it. Once I was done (which took like three months, the longest I’ve worked on a fic) I couldn’t write for several weeks. It took a lot to get me out of my funk.
Project that's been a work-in-progress for ages, that you just can't seem to finish: I’m rewriting one that I started in 2018, We Take Care of Each Other
Work you want to write one day, but haven't yet started: No idea. I’m making it my 2020 goal to write for myself, so hopefully I’ll feel inspired soon.
Work you thought you would never write, but finally did: Probably Risks Worth Taking. I’ve been toying around with a Something Corporate inspired fic, so I’m proud of myself for writing it!
Genre you thought you would never write, but finally did: Oh, gosh, probably my Weasleycest fic, Ripe Strawberries. I read this stuff in secret, and didn’t think I’d ever actually write some of it, but..I got v inspired.
Longest amount of time passed between starting a project and finally finishing it:
...three weeks? I started I just want to be fucking, happy? when I thought my partner was dumping me, and writing the anger honestly really helped. We’re still together (at this date and time) and I’m hopeful for our future, but it took a lot out of me. I was supposed to write for another fest at the time (Wireless) and had to back out because it was all suddenly too much. I think that’s why this fic is so angry.
What's more difficult, plot or characters? Plot! Also, I forget they can do magic...a lot.
(If you outline) biggest difference between the outline you prepared in advance and the finished work: I only outline big fics, and 90% of the time they fall apart around halfway through, but it’s still nice to have a rough idea of where it’s going. My characters push me around a bit, they usually get their way in the end.
Favourite opening line:
It was just another Thursday. The sun was shining, his hair was behaving properly, and just like every other Thursday, Draco Malfoy hated his job. - Everything to Lose
Draco didn't ask for this. - Thunder
Neville was always the first to wake. - Small Comforts
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2019? Oh, probably Harry and the entirety of his dorm room in Dare for a Lion, or knight!Harry and queen!Draco in His Noble Love.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?: I am trying to let myself write for me without judgement. I wrote Darling this year, a Neville/Minnie that I was really craving to write, and to be honest I didn’t explore it nearly as much as I wanted to because I was scared of the backlash. I think that’s why it took me all year to write my Weasleycest as well. I was worried people would write mean things or unsubscribe. And they did. And I kept writing.
Do you mostly write for challenges/fic exchanges/fests etc. or do you mostly write in your own time? In 2019, I wrote predominantly for fests, and this year, while I want to keep doing fests, I’m only going to do them for rarepairs. Maybe owlpost. I put too much pressure on myself, esp when it’s unrevealed, and I don’t like it. So this year I’m writing for myself first.
(If you write stories with relationships) Mostly first time or established relationship? or something else? I love giving that bit of flashback, a kiss or a look or a date and then it all dissolved. So a getting-together/back together kind of thing. I’m not good at UST or at slowburns, so I like having that little hill already completed.
Is there a type of story you read but would never write? Or maybe one that you've written, but rarely read? I don’t like anything with a sad ending, so I won’t write it, but sometimes I find myself reading them. I also don’t know if I’d write dramione, or draco/ginny, but I read them. I write some G, T and M, but I typically don’t read something unless its Explicit, or from a fav author of mine.
Whew that was fun! Cheers to 2020!
