One day a young swan went for a swim in his local pond. He was special, as he was the only white swan on the lake. All the other swans were black and rather ugly. Our swan, let us call him Bernard, was vain. He was so vain, in fact, that the other swans would get mad at him and beat him up whenever he tried to join their flock, so Bernard just stayed away from them. Bernard was sad and lonely, but he would not change his ways. So Bernard continued in this sad way until a fish called to him. "Bernard!" it said softly, "Bernard! Do you want to have friends?" Bernard was surprised, but answered back, "Yes! More than anything in the world!" The fish chuckled and told him, "Bernard, if you want friends, fly south. For each day that you fly south you will gain one friend, but try to be courteous to each one, for if you offend any of them, they will become your enemy."
So Bernard took the fish's advice and started to fly south. On the first day he met up with a mallard, it was caught in a trap, so Bernard flew down to help him. "Don't worry, I know how to get you out of there!" Bernard said helpfully. "Oh thank you! I've been stuck for almost a day and I was worried that the hunter would get me!" After Bernard got the Mallard out of the trap the mallard bowed and said, "I am Ferdinand, and I am forever grateful. You are a true friend." Bernard beamed and didn't even mention the mallard's ugly green head feathers. On the second day a fierce wind came up, Bernard and Ferdinand were flying along and came across a little thrush, beating her wings desperately against the wind but getting tossed about despite her efforts. Bernard and Ferdinand went immediately to her assistance, helping her down into the shelter of some trees, "Thanks. That wind was more than I could handle! By the way, my name is Cecilia."
Bernard was growing happier and happier with is new friends, not even minding that his feathers were messy. On the third day Ferdinand, Cecilia and Bernard found a beautiful pond, with a forest surrounding it. In the pond was a heron. The heron looked up at them and raised a wing in greeting. The three glided down to the old bird and exchanged greetings. "They call me Grandfather Ardon, what are your names young ones?" the old bird said gracefully. "I'm Bernard, and this is Ferdinand, and Cecilia. Your pond is very beautiful, we would be honored if you would let us live here."
