absolutejamer asked:

Why do kiwis have such massive fucking eggs “it’s because they are related to ostriches and-“ yeah ok but like why didn’t they evolve smaller eggs if I was in charge I would do that shit pronto. Thoughts?

crabussy answered:

their big eggs are actually that size for a similar reason to human babies having massive heads!! being bigger at birth can be important.

kiwi are trying SO HARD to become mammals. fur-like feathers, whisker-like feathers, little beady eyes, nocturnal, great sense of smell…. that’s basically a mammal!! they’re well suited for life on the forest floor.

their big eggs work alongside these adaptations to give them a leg up in the bird world. their young hatch already feathered! they’re precocial, which means they’re born with the ability to open their eyes and move around. like foals.

big egg = more powerful offspring from the get-go. babies don’t need to spend precious time vulnerable while they develop on the ground when they’ve already done all that in the egg!

(unfortunately, with the introduction of mammals to aotearoa, these adaptations are a little less useful…)

Important addition: baby kiwi come out of the egg looking like they've come out of a shower with a hangover

They look like one of the downsides of emerging from an egg fully formed is how aware you are off just having come out on egg.
First minute alive, already dealing with some fucking experience.

has anybody else noticed that the classic sci fi novel Don’t Create The Torment Nexus features a Torment Nexus? that’s pretty problematic of the author

firestorm09890

the main character eventually recognizes the torment nexus is bad but by that point I had already stopped reading the book because I don't condone the torment nexus, the narrative really should've condemned it outright :/

Brutus, Marbas, Viper and Butch. the four horsemen of the wupocalyse

pangur-and-grim

four puppies in the panopticon. but who is the cutest?

Brutus

Marbas

Viper

Butch

gerogerigaogaigar

Brutus: Belly out. Tail curled. Shows fear and submission. Does not have the warrior spirit.

Marbas: Dynamic posing. Tail straight. Biting foot. Willing to test her own limits. Comfortable on the battlefield. The most powerful puppy.

Viper: Reaching out in desperation. Tail curled in fear. A craven beast that is still in conflict with herself.

Butch: oblivious. Comfortable but lazy. Easily caught unawares by the enemy. A liability in combat.

some of you need to stop psychoanalising your kinks and start doing mad scientist shit to them instead.

no more "do I enjoy being tied up because I secretly crave an excuse not to fight back against intimacy because of my mother", that is dumb and useless.

start doing shit like "what do I like about being tied up? what part of it gets me going?" and then once you have isolated the components of the kink that are the main drivers, look for all the other kinks that contain them. mix and match. get creative. experiment.

I've had fairly severe back pain for the last few days. My back hurts most of the time, but lately it really hurts, and it is literally maddening.

Like, I realize that there's nothing I can say that will help you bridge the empathy divide between us. I realize that, as Elaine Scarry wrote, "To have great pain is to have certainty. To hear that another person has pain is to have doubt."

But holy shit when you are really hurting, it is hard to really be anything else. The pain consumes both body and self. The answer to how are you is in pain, and the answer to what do you want to do today is have less pain, and the answer to what are your plans for the weekend is to lie supine in a vain attempt to relieve the pain.

Relief, which is a lovely word, becomes more and more the only thing I want. I don't want to be successful or win the lottery or have a million people read my new book; I only want relief. I want to be returned to the state that the rest of the world appears to be in, a world where you can care about this and about that instead of being forced only to care about the pain.

This is the part of the post where I say, "But at least I am learning lots of important lessons from the pain" or whatever, but no. I am learning nothing from it. It is so boring and monotonous and loud and all-encompassing. I give back pain one star.
