merlin dies, gwaine lives. when he comes back to camelot, and arthur tells him merlin didn’t survive, he just leaves. he’s goes back to just going wherever life takes him and starts drinking even more, but one day at a tavern he hears that king arthur was becoming a tyrant due to losing the love of his life. he heads back to camelot because obviously it isn’t true, just to see every building burnt to the ground and several magic users bodies all over the place. gwaine thought merlin’s death effected him the most, but it doesn’t even come close to arthur who is now a shell of the man, and leader, he once was

merthur but merlin dies instead. arthur would be so consumed with guilt he that he would slowly become insane. he becomes worse than uther with the magic ban because mordred (who has magic) killed merlin instead. he downright becomes a tyrant because he lost the love of his life knowing that he never truly knew merlin in the first place
