Between the "30 days of Blake's 7" meme I was doing on DreamWidth and the subsequent outbreak of fanfic (currently about 10,000 words and end in sight), I have been somewhat immersed in Blake's 7 even before I went to do a bit of research on Hermit for said fanfic this morning and wandered off into the con reports. This probably explains why when I went to Co-Op this afternoon and their in-house radio started playing The Beautiful South's "Don't marry her, have me", I was immediately taken back to the first time I heard that song - as a Blake's 7 filk at Redemption 99. It was very funny then, and having just looked it up on the con reports page it's still funny now.

I've been feeling rather melancholy the last few weeks. February or March marked 30 years since I went to my first con. It was Neutral Zone in Newcastle, a multimedia con by the local Star Trek fan group, and I went because Gareth Thomas was a guest. I had a lot of fun, so I went to another one, the first Discworld con. And then the last Who's 7, and since then I've gone to at least one con every year.

I wrote B7 con reports and theatre trip reports back then. _Detailed_ reports. And I'm so glad I did, because although I wrote them for other fans who couldn't be there, now they're for me. 20, 25, 30 years on, I can read them and be taken back to that time when we were all young. All the people I met and made friends with.

Fannish networks change and we lose contact. We move on, from Usenet and mailing lists to LiveJournal and Twitter, and Tumbler, to other fandoms, and, and... People drift away, and sadly some of them have died now. It's ten years since Gareth died, eleven since we lost Pterry. But I still have online links with so many of those friends of long ago, and if there is ever another Redemption I will be there.

After a certain amount of fighting with PayPal, I have paid for my ticket to the UK GLBT Fiction Meet. This does not necessarily mean that I will be there, given the ongoing medical problems, but at least I've got a ticket now.

Just bought my membership for Satellite 4, next year's Eastercon being held in Glasgow. This is not a guarantee that I'll be there, of course, but Kalypso_v and I are intending to travel up together for the weekend. For those intending to go who have not yet bought a membership, price goes up at the end of tomorrow.

Still need to make a final decision on the UK Meet, but that will have to wait until I've checked my diary for the many and varied medical appointments over the next few months.

Somewhat annoyed, as I managed to leave the walking stick in the taxi, and a) it's not mine, b) I need it this weekend. So not very mobile. However, I have managed to hook the iThing to the hotel wifi, so am not cut off from the intarwebs as long as I sit in the foyer. Currently in the dance workshop checking in with Watervole, but about to move off in search of other friends.

Current con plans for this year:

Redemption -- arriving Friday, leaving Monday. No panels and not planning to do anything other than help out on tech if I'm up to it.

Eastercon -- not going. It's simply not feasible if I can't stay in the con hotel itself, because I can't manage the amount of walking/standing needed to use the overflow hotels.

UK Meet -- planning to go assuming I'm sure I'm available by last date for the discount weekend rate. But it's expensive by the standards of fan-run sf cons, so not buying a ticket until I'm sure I can go. (Yes, it's a ticket event, not a membership event.)

No particular plans further out. I expect I will once again fail to get to Novacon...

Closet con

Am thinking of going to Closet Con, although as usual I won't be sure until nearer the time. I know there are a couple of others on my flist, but anyone else thinking of going? 13-15 August in Leicester, it's a K/S con but there is, or at least was the last time I had the chance to go, a fair chunk of general slash conversation. (I suspect Watervole and I may bore people around us rigid by talking about future plans for writing slashy profic.)

Family commitments mean that I will almost certainly not be able to make it to Eastercon 2010. This sucks, because a lot of my friends will be there, and because the Radisson is one of the few con hotels I have been to which gives me the feeling that I might actually get a reasonable night's sleep every night. I shall think about an appropriate regional/specialist con to go to instead, but I think that it will again have to be a matter of not making firm plans until very near the actual date. Which in turn means that one of the restrictions will be that I can either be sure of getting a room even if I leave it to the last minute, or can cancel the hotel reservation up until the last minute.

(I'm not releasing my Odyssey room booking and membership just yet -- the former because I need to be sure that my potential sharers have other arrangements, and the latter because even a supporting membership would now cost near what I originally paid for the full membership.)

Something I was asked for in the m/m romance chat at Literary Nymphs yesterday -- copy-n-paste from my email this evening in reply:

Okay, as asked for yesterday by some of the UK crowd:

the UK slash con that is definitely running this year is Connotations,
Newcastle, England, October 3-5 2008
The website hasn't been updated, but they have an LJ:
http://community.livejournal.com/connotations/
I've never been to it because it started after I left the UK, but some of my friends have and seem to like it.

I have a vague memory of seeing something about another one being revived after some years in hiatus, but I need to track down the details, and they don't like being talked about in public anyway. (Ah -- they're on in July this year, in Leicester. Email me for the link.)

Redemption isn't a slash con, but it is slash-friendly and usually has some slash-orientated panels and workshops in the programme (including the ever popular "realism in slash" panel). Next one's 20-22 Feb 2009, in Coventry:
