The parish has begun a program to encourage our seniors to be more active and to provide opportunities for greater socialization and to let them know how important they are to the parish. We created the OWLS program (Older, Wiser, Livelier, Seniors) with the mission of promoting healthy aging, and the well-being of our older adults through health, wellness, educational, recreational programs and services. We also created a partnership with Presbyterian Senior Care, the experts in the services and programs for seniors, and asked them to provide support to our program through various activities and a speaker’s bureau addressing many issues related to the aging process. This partnership has proven to be beneficial and well received by our members. The OWLS membership has grown exponentially, and we now have over 100 seniors signed up. Every month on the 4th Thursday, we meet for lunch and enjoy a speaker or planned activity after lunch is served.
Our focus is to let seniors know “Retirement does not have to be boring”. In the later years of life, staying active is more important than ever. Many seniors enjoy meeting new friends and sharing stories about their families and friends. This is what the OWLS program is all about. The OWLS program is still in the early stages of development, and we are always looking for new members and new ideas to make the program better. Our members include those who are 60 plus years of age. We are extending an invitation to anyone who would like to join the program. You can access the membership application on the website at www.john23.org under the category “GET INVOLVED” - Senior OWLS Program or john23.org/owls.
