it's informative talking to Ninja

I was talking to Greg from Kageyama on Monday after showing up a week early for the resuming of jitsu classes.

Taking advantage of a dojo with no one to see what I was doing, I decided to finally give rolling with a bokken a try. It presents one with difficulties that are not expected. I'm sure I looked extremely awkward :P

anyway, I was training with the bokken doing various strikes etc and I also tried to look at my positioning when entering for a throw (shadow jitsu beats shadow boxing any day) and I couldn't help but feel that a lot of my positioning when entering for various throws felt a lot like my positioning when I was doing bokken exercises.

So I asked Greg about that. After a long and extremely illuminating conversation, he directed me to search the term "namba-aruki". Check it out, there's too many links to post here, but a simple google search will yield some very interesting articles about the foundation of why we move the way we move in jitsu.

Cool judo video, quite old

This is footage of Mifune Sensei, one of the last 10th dans in Judo. He demonstrates much of our syllabus, mostly replayed in slow motion. There is a nice randori at the end too, where he just toys with his students, most of whom are about twice his size. There is Japanese running commentary, from which you can generally pick out the names of the throws.

Definitely worth checking out.
