I already changed my layout again because 1) I saw this "Christmas" default DW theme and thought it would look really nice for autumn/Thanksgiving, and 2) because I was looking at the Christmas layouts at [livejournal.com profile] thefulcrum and I know I'm going to want to throw one of those up, so I wanted to enjoy this one while it was seasonal. XD

But this brings me to my true task of the evening: in discovering that many of the cute Christmas layouts at [livejournal.com profile] thefulcrum used other base styles than Mixit, which was so far the only LJ style layer I'd installed, I embarked on a quest to install more of LJ's old style layers on my DW.

As I said before, there is an excellent tutorial on how to add these layers, written by [personal profile] crush at [community profile] starlit. However, as LiveJournal changed its raw source code awhile back, [personal profile] crush only had the code for Mixit, Smooth Sailing, Flexible Squares, and Nebula, which somewhat limits layout abilities.

In perusing the comments, I found that user [profile] bioamped shared the source codes for five more styles: Dear Diary, Minimalism, Opal OSWD, Style System (Bloggish) and Tranquility II.

Never one to do things intelligently, I had already snatched Bloggish's code from InsaneJournal, becaaaause it turns out that InsaneJournal did NOT change its raw source coding when LJ did, so their styles are all the old versions*! Not sure if [profile] bioamped's version of Bloggish is the same as the one I used, but the one I used installed nicely with no errors, so... :-)

I did take the opportunity to install [profile] bioamped's versions of the other four layouts, though. All installed error-free with the exception of Minimalism. I managed to get rid of the errors by deleting the following lines:
property use text_flag;
"tell_friend" => $*text_tell_friend,
"flag" => $*text_flag,

So Minimalism is now working for me.

While I was at it, I thought I'd back everything up in case [personal profile] crush or [profile] bioamped's links ever stop working. This includes the updated code for Minimalism that I used, as well as the version of Bloggish from InsaneJournal. You can find all the codes in .txt files in this directory for easy access.

So, if you had a layout on LJ that used Bloggish, Dear Diary, Flexible Squares, Minimalism, Mixit/Expressive, Nebula, Opal/Libra OWSD, Smooth Sailing or Tranquility II, and you wanted to bring your layout over to DW, you're in luck!

* InsaneJournal also has a lot of the codes for some of the older layout styles, such as Generator. I did not import these so I don't know if they will work, but you can try it by following [personal profile] crush's tutorial and pasting in the raw source codes from here.

EDIT: I just imported Generator onto my sister's account in case she decides she wants to go back to her old LJ layout, and it imported successfully with no errors. Good to know!

I'm so excited that more and more of my friends are coming over to Dreamwidth (now, even my sister [personal profile] mystical_wings is here)! I can't even believe this, but my DW reading page has more activity on it now than my LJ page! This is so awesome! ♥

Since so many of my LJ friends are new(-ish) to DW, I thought I would share some fun tips and tricks I've discovered while using the site, that took me a long time to figure out on my own XD

Layouts
I know a complaint in the past has been that most of the base styles on DW are... well... kind of ugly. This is a complaint I have had myself, as well. There has actually been an upsurge in nice-looking layouts recently, though; my last two layouts (I change them seasonally) have been default DW layouts that I've only done a little, if any, editing to. And today, as I was helping my sister to set up hers, I found even more cute layouts that have just been added. (Check out this super adorable layout on my sister's DW!)

But, if you don't like any of those, it's actually pretty simple to get custom layouts from LJ on here. I've used plenty of layouts from [livejournal.com profile] thefulcrum on here. You can find a simple tutorial here!

User Codes
One of the things I love most about DW is the little changes it made to user codes, particularly the cut code and the userhead code. You can still use the LJ codes, <lj user> and <lj-cut>

BUT you can also use these DW-specific codes, <user> and <cut>

I'm sorry, maybe this is just the HTML geek in me talking, but I LOVE these because, first of all, it's weird to me to use "lj" codes since this isn't lj, but ALSO because there are all sorts of cool new things you can do with the username code because of it.

<user name="name" /> will give you a DW userhead, like [personal profile] jeweledeyes

<user name="name" site="whatever.com" />, though, gives you the capability to specify a different website!

<user name="name" site="livejournal.com" /> gives you a Livejournal username, like [livejournal.com profile] jeweledeyes

This also now has the capability to recognize individual users vs. communities! It used to drive me crazy that it would use the individual username, no matter what. When it started recognizing communities, I got so excited! You don't have to do anything differently than above; just put the username and specify livejournal.com and you will get [livejournal.com profile] project_donut

I'm not sure how many different sites total are supported, but I do know we have

<user name="name" site="tumblr.com" /> Tumblr [tumblr.com profile] sailordonut
<user name="name" site="twitter.com" /> Twitter [x.com profile] hufflepuff_lisa
<user name="name" site="archiveofourown.org" /> AO3 [archiveofourown.org profile] sailordonut (this also works if you put "ao3.org" as the site)

OpenID Claiming
A lot of you probably have OpenID accounts on here, if only because they got created when I imported my LJ entries. This means that, if you're logged in on LJ and don't have a DW account, you can still comment on my posts (and, I believe, view my friends-locked entries if I have added your OpenID account to my access list).

What you may not know is, if you decide to sign up for a DW account, you can claim your OpenID account and it will merge all your OpenID comments with your DW account! Then you can do stuff like edit your comments, add icons, etc.

Just go to this page and type in your username on the other site (for example, if coming from LJ, username.livejournal.com). It takes a little bit, but you'll soon get an email asking you to confirm this, and voila, your OpenID account and DW account are merged!

Exploring DW
If you find you're a little bored and having trouble making friends/finding things to read on DW, there are a bunch of really cool tools you can use under the "Explore" tab. First of all, the search function on DW is a lot easier and more detailed than LJ's, with not only an "interest" search, but also a directory search and a site and journal search!

But my favorite two ways to explore are:
  • The Network Page: This is a page that will show you all the (public) activity on your friends' reading pages. You can see what kind of comms and feeds your friends are following, and maybe even find some new friends!

  • The Latest Things Page: This shows the latest entries that have been posted, as well as showing the most popular tags. You can click on a tag and find the latest posts in that category, as well. You would be surprise—I have met new friends this way, as well as asked rhetorical questions into the void and actually gotten answers from helpful strangers!

I like both these features a lot, and I always knew they existed, but for some reason I could never find them. All I had to do was look under the explore tab! Fail. These things make so much sense now, but I was so confused by it all when I first joined DW. So if you find you are confused and would like some help, please feel free to leave me a comment. It took me a long time to get situated on here, so I'd like to help you all as much as I can!
