MINORS DNI | Marrow. She/they. Canadian, 20-something. Preacher of the sub Ilya gospel.

Seeing many Hudson Williams fans yearning to watch Yaga but nervous to do so because they can't do horror. So!!! As your local Horror Enthusiast I would like to try and support the community by making episode recaps with content warnings. I'll make a list of warnings followed by a synopsis. I can't guarantee timestamps but I'll do my best to indicate particular scenes that may need skipping. I'll tag these as #marrow's yaga synopses. Please let me know here if you'd like to be tagged when I make those posts, as well as any specific warnings you'd like noted that I might not catch in my basic list. I'll see you all in October!!

Ilya’s pretend nonchalance over the tuna melts and then he pulls out his perfectly prepared containers…never beating the loverboy allegations

a particular thing that caught my eye on this TLG reread is just how many times Shane opens his arms for Ilya to fall into. and it's written just like that, Shane opens his arms and Ilya comes in and lets himself be held and comforted. it's so fucking sweet

I just??? hello??

Yeah guys I just got the script for season 2 & Tierney is making some WEIRD changes. So it opens up on Shane & he’s chained to a pipe in this gross bathroom & he looks around & Ilya is there in the same situation. & Scott Hunter is in the middle of the room dead? & then they both find these mysterious tapes in their pockets &

Swimming makes you a different kind of tired, right? And Shane knows this, has grown up in and around lakes, he built his Cottage right next to a lake. Ilya does not. Yes he's an athlete but when he comes to the Cottage it's the first time he spends a longer amount of time in the water, swimming around, doing handstands, all of it.

So his first post lake nap hits hard. Ilya, freshly showered, just meant to sit down on the couch for a second but he wakes up four hours later. Half his curls pressed to the side of his head, the other fluffy because he fell asleep with his hair still a bit wet. He's got faint lines on his cheek from where his face was pressed into one of the pillows. No idea what time it is or how long he's been asleep. It takes him a minute to come back online.

"Shane?", he mumbles, not fully awake yet but already searching for Shane.

"Right here", comes Shane's voice and, oh, yes he is. Ilya blinks sleepily at him. It takes him another minute to realise that his feet are in Shane's lap. One of Shane's hands is on his shin, thumb softly caressing it. In his other hand he's holding a book. Ilya watches as Shane puts his bookmark into the book, putting it on the small table next to the couch so he can give Ilya his full attention.

"Good nap?", Shane asks. And he's smiling and his eyes are warm and his thumb keeps caressing Ilya's shin and Ilya just feels so warm and safe and happy because he still can't believe he actually gets to have this. With neither of them having to rush, to leave, to pretend that they didn't want to stay in the first place.

So Ilya just nods, stretching and then settling back into the cussions. "Sorry for falling asleep", he says, voice raspy from sleep, eyes already falling closed again. Because, well. He did just fully pass out on Shane. But Shane just smiles at him, squeezing his shin.

"It's okay, Ilya. We have time. Go back to sleep, I'll be here."

And Ilya falls back asleep, safe and happy and with the promise of Shane right next to him.

Shane and Ilya taking a long shower together at home after a game and Shane is washing Ilya bc he took a rough hit on his arm and side during the game and they both know he could easily wash himself but Shane wants to do this for him anyway so Ilya stands beneath the spray and leans back into his husband's chest and just loses himself in the feeling of calluses tracing over his scalp and through the roots of his hair and when they step out and when Shane hands him a towel Ilya shakes his head and lifts his arms and says "aren't you going to help me?" and they both know he could easily dry himself but instead Shane takes the huge soft fluffy towel and gently pats down his whole body, clasping his muscles through the fabric and running it steadily down the line of his back, kneeling to run it down his legs and between his thighs, picking up and drying each foot, before standing chest to chest and covering his head with the towel before pulling it back over his face to rest on his curls and holding his beautiful bundled up face rosy from the shower. Amen and god bless

I don't think there's really any point trying to reconcile changes made to the source material in adapting season 1 of Heated Rivalry with the textual book story of The Long Game, other than as a thought exercise, because the very existence of changes in the first season means there will also be changes in the second season. So, if you love TLG you still might not see the story exactly as is, it will be altered to fall in line with the show canon, and if you dislike TLG, well, it probably won't be the same as the book you don't like seen on screen. All this to say, don't stress! Or try not to. I just think you have to go into season 2 curious and excited to see Tierney's adaptation and take on things, just like season 1 was his take on things. We were all surprised and delighted by the show (obviously, we're still here lol), and it's going to be hard to have that sense of whimsy for season 2, but by god I'm going to try.
