Paid to pretend to care

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to pretend to care at work.

Take this morning, for example. A client had ordered something but that thing is not available. My job, as representative of the company who pay my wages, is to phone the client and tell him he can't have what he wants. I hate these calls. The client will rant and be disappointed and angry. I hold the phone away from my face until he blows out of steam then, leaving enough of an awkward pause that he knows I haven't actually been listening, I say "I'm terribly sorry". If he continues ranting after that, I put him onto someone who is paid more than me to care, like my manager for instance.

I love the rude shop assistant that the punctuation woman writes about. "Excuse me, how much is this?" "What am I? Psychic?"
