Though from the tabloids, this article on the new "geek girl" manga culture might not be that far off. Masae and I were in Tokyo last weekend, where she was sitting for a national licensening exam at Tokyo Big Site. Sunday they had a "Comic City" event, so I thought I would check it since it was free (well, at least that's what the English webpage claimed, as it turns out, they make you buy this phonebook sized event catalog which cost 800 yen -- so I didn't go in). The stream of people who were rushing into the event gates were 99.9% women. Aged 16 to 46, there was no one group that outnumbered the other. It was stunning to watch all these ladies stream in to get comics. What was really amazing was that very few of them "looked" like otaku. If I hadn't known better, I would have assumed they were all rushing to a Hirai Ken concert or similar venue. I really was ... impressed? Stunned is probably a better word. I had no idea the ages were so varied. Yes, I knew that women enjoyed gay manga, I have reported on this before in the past, but not on the scale I was seeing at Comic City. Amazing. More power to the industry. フォォォォォォォォぉぉ...?
