🇺🇸 Robin Olds had the most famous mustache in military history. Maybe the most famous mustache, period. And there is a story behind it.

He grew it in Vietnam while commanding the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, the Wolfpack. He knew full well it violated Air Force Regulation 35-10. As he racked up combat victories, the mustache grew thicker, wider, and more defiant.

For his men, it became a symbol of resistance against political micromanagement from Washington.

Olds later wrote: “It became the middle finger I couldn’t raise in the PR photographs. The mustache became my silent last word in the verbal battles with higher headquarters on rules, targets, and fighting the war.”

The mustache survived 152 combat missions. It did not survive his return home.

When Olds reported to his first meeting with Air Force Chief of Staff General John P. McConnell, the general walked up, stuck a finger under Olds’ nose, and said: “Take it off.”

Olds replied: “Yes, sir.”

Today, Airmen still grow mustaches in his honor in a yearly salute called Mustache March.

On 22 August 1944, the British Fleet Air Arm launched Operation Goodwood against the Tirpitz, which was hidden in Norway’s Kåfjord. The attack was hindered, however, by poor weather, strong flak defences and a German smoke screen. This time the Tirpitz escaped without serious damage. #FleetAirArm
