So one of the things about bloodloathing is that Scott Goldsmith thinks personal autonomy is fake as shit. life is a complicated web of interdependent relationships, and everyone is ultimately beholden to the role they play in that web. preferences are real and choices matter, but if someone defies their role they wind up dead, and dead people are powerless.

it's lucky that Scott was born a noble, and luckier still that he's so skilled at it, but that doesn't make him immune to it. in fact, in some ways, it makes his choices even more limited- a laborer might find work anywhere, but nobles are rather useless at things outside of their specialty.

Doctor Legundo thinks that personal choice is the most important thing in the world. he is defined that the idea that he performed a terrible crime and he didn't have to do that. he labors as a doctor because it helps people, and helping others is a meaningful thing to do in its own right.

Nobles are terrible because they treat lives like toys, and more awful still because they do so pointlessly- they burn through the world for their amusement, for their ego, or simply for the joy of doing so. The crux of the Doc's dynamic with everyone is the idea that people can, and must, do better then that.

Except for Scott, because Scott is a noble. So he can't do better, right?
