Jonathan Shepard

Jonathan Shepard (1948) è uno storico britannico specializzato nella storia della Rus' alto-medievale, del Caucaso e dell'Impero bizantino, oltre che Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Considerato uno dei maggiori esperti dedicatosi ai rapporti intrecciati dai bizantini e dalla Rus' di Kiev, ha realizzato diversi lavori sull'archeologia e sulla diplomazia del più antico periodo kievano. Shepard ha conseguito il dottorato nel 1973 presso l'Università di Oxford ed è stato docente di storia russa presso l'Università di Cambridge. Tra le altre opere, è coautore (con Simon Franklin) di The Emergence of Rus, 750–1200 (1996) e curatore di The Cambridge History of the Byzantine Empire (2008).

Tra le teorie di Shepard c'è quella secondo cui la rottura delle relazioni tra bizantini e cazari e il cambiamento della politica estera bizantina verso l'alleanza con i peceneghi e i rus' contro la Cazaria furono il risultato della conversione dei cazari all'ebraismo.
