Confident vs Internally Critical

Tony exudes self-confidence and charm, traits cultivated from a young age. In the public eye since he was a child, Tony has had to inure himself against the scrutiny and attention that comes with it, and often puts forth the image of a man who's untouchable, unaffected by the petty worries and minute bullshit of the world at large. Accustomed to not only being the smartest guy in the room and likely ten steps ahead of everyone else, but also understanding of the responsibility that entails, his public persona is one of self-assurance and competency, the Tony Stark Show™. He's a cool head in a crisis, the guy you want on your side when the chips are down- his rescue of Air Force One's crew in Iron Man 3 is even punctuated with enthusiastic charm, and a "good job everybody" for the survivors.

Under the hood, as it were, the confidence he projects is often just a mask over his self-doubt and insecurity, possessed of a mile-wide streak of imposter syndrome that's grown and receded over the years.

He's smart and he knows it, but he's also a squishy, fallible human, and he's made a lot of mistakes over the years, some of them with deeply shitty consequences. As Happy relates to Peter Parker in FFH, (paraphrasing here): "Tony second-guessed himself all the time". A further example of this is later on in Endgame, as he figures out how to safely time travel, he still seeks out his wife's opinions on it, her reassurance that he's doing the right thing. Few people in his life ever get to see this side of him, perhaps the core 'IronFam' of Pepper, Rhodey and Happy, so those who don't know him well often mistake his confidence for egoism, or even narcissism. Occasionally he even uses those impressions to his advantage, and isn't above veiling his intentions, or even dropping a mask of total disinterest. Douchey? Yeah, maybe. Does he care? Well...

Thoughtful vs Arrogant

Despite his father's cold distance, and much of his early life spent presenting himself as an untouchable, sardonic billionaire brat, Tony is a surprisingly warm and thoughtful man, with deep affection for friends and teammates, and a willingness to put aside his own feelings (within reason) to compromise for a common goal. He's grown since that "volatile, self-obsessed" mess Nat pegged him as in IM2, in a steady relationship with Pepper now. When push comes to shove, he's open about the mistakes he's made, and apologizes thoughtfully for them.

On the downside, he's still facing his demons from the Battle of New York, and has a bit of a hair trigger: Tony still isn't above making rash decisions, even for other people without consulting them. Challenging the Mandarin & giving him his home address on live tv, while insisting he and Pepper not leave their home, is probably his greatest in the film. He reaps the consequences for it in due course.

With Harley, despite being clipped and sarcastic with the youngster – "no need to be a pussy about it", he tells the boy after hearing his dad left the family years ago – he's also warm and funny, trusting him with both a flash grenade and the charging Mk 42 armor, and openly thankful for Harley's help.

The duality of man, yo.

Distant vs selfless

Pepper once observed, way back in IM (quoting from the novelization here) how "sometimes it was difficult to get any sort of read off Tony Stark. He kept his innermost thoughts and feelings, his very soul, walled off." While he's come a long way since those days, he's still only going to open up to those he's close to, a very, very small circle of people. Tony self-described his Iron Man armor as a cocoon (IM3), but it's not the first of its kind for him to wear, that layer of deadpan, cynical wit cushioning him from the outside world. Even after The Avengers, in IM3 he still has a Go It Alone mindset, which Rhodey even calls him out on.

Despite the distance, Tony has shown time and time again he's more than willing to throw himself in harm's way to protect innocent lives. From instructing Pepper to blow the arc reactor to stop Obadiah, knowing he might also be killed by the blast, to grabbing a nuke and flying it through an inter-galactic portal to the far side of the universe, throwing himself at Ultron-controlled Iron Legion and drawing away Extremis-fueled baddies while suitless (and in the latter case, with both hands cuffed behind his back), and eventually sacrificing himself for the whole universe, Tony has been ready to lay his life down for others. While this is admirable for a superhero, Tony's 'enthusiasm' was partly fueled by his desire to atone for his past mistakes, and led him to believe for a long while that he couldn't stop being Iron Man, shouldering the burden of protecting earth.

Powers/Abilities:

* INT: Tony's a genius among geniuses- he build a computer at five, built a motorcycle with his father as a preteen, and attended MIT at the tender age of 14. While it isn't stated in the films, according to the comics he indeed has a PhD in electrical engineering. Prior to his turning Stark Industries away from weapons manufacturing, he was the brainchild of their R&D, designing software & hardware, alongside smarter, more effective weapons of war. While his suits are presently made in-house (literally, he has fabricators in his garage & made a wide variety of different suits {30+!} between the end of The Avengers and the start of IM3), he can MacGuyver what he needs out of what's available.

With everything he needs at his disposal? Need a stealth suit that can't be detected? Got it. Need an EVA that can withstand space? Yep. Nanomachines, programming, gathering & analyzing data (both in usual ways and less scrupulous ways) to utilize? Can do.

Though he hasn't done so yet, Tony both creates the framework with Bruce Banner for Ultron, and then figures out how to cut him off from the World Wide Web as a whole.

He’s built a miniaturized arc reactor-plus-mech-suit in a cave, a particle accelerator and dozens of powersuits in his garage, a wide array of lethal & non-lethal weaponry from a trip to Home Depot, and works with changing situations in a crisis. Tony is incredibly intelligent and highly resourceful, quick-witted and readily adaptable to whatever's thrown his way.

* Polyglot: Tony has a knack for languages, and according to SHIELD, is fluent in English, French, Italian, Spanish, and also Dari (Farsi).

* Fighting skill: With a background of mixed martial arts under his belt, Tony is well adapted to tussling in and out of armor. Keenly aware that he's 43 and not getting any younger, Tony is frustratingly canny in a fight, unafraid to resort to underhanded tactics, relying on trickery, feigning injury, sussing out and exploiting enemy weaknesses, and utilizing both his surroundings and gadgetry to his advantage. Bad guys don't fight fair, why the Hell should he? He's in it to win it, and while he won't go out of his way to red mist the shit out of an enemy for kicks, he also won't pull his punches when the stakes are high.

Rounding all this out, Tony also has additional experience/training in search & rescue, first-aid, and survival skills.

Regret: Recklessly giving up their home address to the world and nearly killing Pepper, due to his stupid fucking ego.

Suitability: Tony's commitment is off the charts– if he said he's doing something, he's damn well doing it. While he's reaping the consequences of his lone gunslinger attitude as of his canonpoint, he's also taking those consequences to heart, and will readily be a team player among the crew. And he's a talented engineer to boot! What's not to like?
