Whether you are my assigned author, a pinch-hitter, or someone casting about for treats to write (I am ALWAYS up for treats!), I hope you find my letter for Yuletide 2024 useful.
Let me say first off - thanks! I think you're nifty to write me a fic in a wonderful fandom we share! Above all, if you have a good time writing the story, that will shine through, and I guarantee that I'll enjoy it too.
General stuff:
*I'm requesting only the characters that I want driving the story, but I am ALL ABOUT those characters having friends who love them, support them, fight with them, and more - I love to see my chosen characters inhabiting a full world.
*I don't have a rating in mind, so anything from G to NC-17/Explicit is completely fine. I enjoy gen, het, and slash equally.
*For this challenge, I'd prefer to have the characters mostly as they are in canon and for the canons themselves to be relatively stable - no big AUs this time around, please.
*I don't really enjoy unremittingly dark fic, and I don't want anything with a terribly unhappy ending.
*I swoon for humor. I'm impressed by world-building, and I love seeing those little details that tell me you've thought about the realities of the place you're depicting. I adore quietly sorrowful stories. I quite enjoy romance and smut. (Here is my letter for smut-centric challenges.)
*I think of myself as easy to please and have requested only characters and canons that I absolutely love and am excited by, which I'm hoping makes your job a little easier.
*I am always open to treats - thank you in advance if you're thinking of writing me one!

I do not want fic with any kind of consent issues (rape, non-con, dub-con, altered mental states), polyamory, infidelity (even fucking A while wishing to be with B), A/B/O, toys, bestiality or animal play, permanent death of a tag-set character, loss of bodily control, body modification, loss of mental soundness, BDSM, permanent power imbalances, soulmates/soul-bonding, larger destinies that erase choice and free will, pain/pain-play, humiliation, or a very unhappy ending, please. Also no (/Reader)(/You) insert-fic, please.

Now on to the details, since I think I'm more likely to get a story that hits all of my buttons if I tell you what my buttons are for these fandoms. I would be deliriously happy with a fic for any of these requests (listed alphabetically and not in desired order)!
If I Never Met You - Mhairi McFarlane [one adult novel, ~400 pages]
Laurie Watkinson, Jamie Carter, Emily Clarke, Bharat; My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags or it may use exceptions I explain in the form
I just adore this book, and I love these four characters to an alarming degree. It's a romance, yes, but the friendships are equally important (and even more hilarious) on both sides, and there's a lot of working through what kind of person you want to be and what kind of person you actually are, and navigating the distance between those two. It's a great read and since we have at least one small fandom in common, I'd bet you would enjoy it too (if you haven't already read it). Any fic for this book must include Laurie and Jamie, and I would love to see Emily and Bharat as well, or even in the foreground with L&J in the background. What if Emily and Bharat start wingmanning each other? What if they decide to team up to be the best babysitter Laurie and Jamie could ever dream of? I'm particularly interested in what happens after the novel closes - L&J get married, and then? Do they end up having kids? How do their mothers get along? Where does Jamie work and does Laurie go for the promotion? Does Laurie ever learn to dance and does Jamie kill all her new houseplants?
Mapleworth Murders (TV) [12 episodes, about 2 hours total]
Abigail Mapleworth; My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags
Paula Pell is just flat-out hilarious to me, and this tiny gem of a show, with its bite-sized episodes, shows her off perfectly. She's Abigail Mapleworth, famous mystery writer, whose niece has come to visit, and together they stumble over several mysteries in their small town. I asked for only Abigail because I need her to be the center of the fic, but I'd love to see her paired up with Heidi, with Gilbert, with Chief Bills, with any of the characters we met in the single season, or with a new character. I'd prefer gen fic for this one, as I really adore Abigail's independence and I think she'd rather turn to her drawer of personal massagers than another person. Give me something as loony as the show and I'll be a happy camper!
mulberry down!! - Nicole Kornher-Stace [short story, link provided in this post]
You | The Exiled One (mulberry down!!), The Other (mulberry down!!), The Librarian (mulberry down!!), The Friend (mulberry down!!); My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags or it may use exceptions I explain in the form
This story turns me inside-out every time I read it, and I've never been able to put my finger on why it's so hypnotic or what it all means. I can't really imagine fic for this story, but I would love to see what you come up with, if you're so motivated. I also cannot conceive of a fic that doesn't include "You | The Exiled One" and therefore "The Other" as well, but if you are on a creative roll getting inside the mind of the Friend and/or the Librarian, do not let my tags stop you. The original is such an amazing ride that I'd love to read any take on it.
Secrets & Scrabble series - Josh Lanyon [8 cozy mysteries so far, ~2400 pages]
Ellery Page; My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags
A friend turned me on to Josh Lanyon, the ridiculously prolific writer of various m/m romances, often with mystery frames. This series is one of my favorites, in large part because it's so chill (closed-door romance, not a lot of explicit violence). Ellery is a grown-up who takes care of himself emotionally - already he sounds like a unicorn, right? - and I find it really charming that he knows he was a terrible actor and he's not sure of how suited he is to run a mystery bookshop but he's going to do his best. I'm requesting only him because he is my favorite, but if you want to give me Jack or Watson or Nora or his parents interacting with him, that would be fantastic! I've now read all eight books (at least one more is on the way), and I think there are some holes that could use filling: books 7&8 skipped over Ellery's birthday (canonically in October), the upcoming meeting with Jack's family should be interesting, and I'd like to see if George ever does make that documentary of the dive that brought up the body. Of course you could also get Ellery and Jack married if that's the way your fancy takes you.
