Hi, Gorgeous!
This is my letter for Yuletide 2021. I hope it's helpful. Please feel free to poke me (anonymously in the comments here or by proxy) if you need me to clarify anything.
Let me say first off - thanks! I think you're nifty to write me a fic in a tiny fandom we share! Above all, if you have a good time writing the story, that will shine through, and I guarantee that I'll enjoy it too.
General stuff:
*I'm requesting only the character(s) that I want driving the story, but I am ALL ABOUT those characters having friends who support them or fight with them - I'd love to see my chosen characters inhabiting a full world.
*I don't have a rating in mind, so anything from G to NC-17/Explicit is completely fine. I enjoy gen, het, and slash equally.
*For this challenge, I'd prefer to have the characters mostly as they are in canon and for the canons themselves to be relatively stable - no big AUs this time around, please.
*I don't really enjoy unremittingly dark fic, and I don't want anything with a terribly unhappy ending.
*Not a deal-breaker, but if you could avoid discussions of Covid, that would be great. Also, I don't celebrate any holidays on the Yuletide schedule, so I'm not big on fics that use Christmas or Hanukkah as major components.
*I swoon for humor. I'm impressed by world-building, and I love seeing those little details that tell me you've thought about the realities of the place you're depicting. I adore quietly sorrowful stories. I quite enjoy romance and smut. (Here is my letter for smut-centric challenges.)
*I think of myself as easy to please and have requested only characters and canons that I absolutely love, which I'm hoping makes your job a little easier.
*I'm so excited to read your fic!
DO NOT WANTS:
I do not want fic with any kind of consent issues (rape, non-con, dub-con, altered mental states), polyamory, infidelity (even fucking A while wishing to be with B), A/B/O, toys, bestiality or animal play, permanent death of a tag-set character, loss of bodily control, body modification, loss of mental soundness, BDSM, permanent power imbalances, soulmates/soul-bonding, larger destinies that erase choice and free will, pain/pain-play, humiliation, or a very unhappy ending, please. Also no (/Reader)(/You) insert-fic, please.
(I tend to do a lot of clickety-clicking once I have my assignment, but in case you'd rather just have a couple of straightforward links to figure me out, here is my master fic list (stories are listed in the order in which I wrote them within each fandom) and here I am on AO3 under the name innie. I don't have a tumblr or twitter or a current lj — I'm just on dw and AO3.)
Now on to the details, since I think I'm more likely to get a story that hits all of my buttons if I tell you what my buttons are for these fandoms. I would be deliriously happy with a fic for any of these requests (listed alphabetically and not in desired order)!
Hot Rod [90-minute movie] (This is currently available on Amazon Prime in the US, which is how I found it and fell in love with it.)
Rod Kimble
This movie is just darling. A lavishly curled Andy Samberg and his bubble-butt star as Rod Kimble, a kid (he's maybe 22? 24?) who dreams of following in his late father's footsteps and being a stunt man. Only he's terrible at it, as is his crew (Jorma Taccone, Bill Hader, Danny McBride), but they all believe in each other and hang out together just for the pleasure of each other's company. Rod gets the life-changing news from his mom (Sissy Spacek!) that his stepfather Frank (Ian McShane!) needs a heart transplant, and Rod displaces all his love and resentment for Frank into a determination that he'll do one big stunt to raise the money needed for the operation. Of course there's a girl next door (Isla Fisher), but she's got a terrible boyfriend (Will Arnett, playing the platonic ideal of terrible boyfriends), and Rod clearly likes her but respects that she's already in a relationship. The movie is sweet-hearted and sincere, and aside from some swearing is very clearly a PG-13 experience. Plus it's hilarious and eminently quotable.
I'm requesting only Rod because I want him to be the main character in your fic, but can't decide what I want most to see: is it Rod and Denise, taking the first steps in their new relationship (which would obviously be Rod's first)? Is it Rod and his half-brother Kevin, the faithful videographer and team manager, figuring out what to do now that they did what they set out to do and have kept Frank alive? (Is it Rod/Denise and Kevin/Jonathan, with Rod and Kevin huddling often to try to work through how to be in relationships? Shamefully, I still haven't gotten over how Jonathan calls Kevin "precious" the first time they meet, nor am I ignoring that Jonathan apparently keeps muscle-man magazines in his house.) Or is it Rod and his family, trying to puzzle out their future?
Never Have I Ever [20 25-minute episodes so far/open canon] (This is currently available on Netflix in the US. A third season is apparently forthcoming.)
Ben Gross
As I was incoherently trying to explain to some friends the other day, this show works for me because the language the Vishwakumars speak is the language my family speaks, and so much about Nalini in particular reminds me strongly of my mom and other family members. (Nalini is my secret favorite. [Also, it drives me bonkers that no one has instructed McEnroe on how to pronounce the Vishwakumars' names. Get it together, Johnny Mac.])
On the Yuletide tip, though, I very clearly have a type, and the guy who carries the emotional weight in a love triangle is my guy forever. I love Ben Gross and I love seeing him fitting in with Devi's family - Nalini and Kamala would both have really interesting thoughts about him - and her friends - Eleanor in particular seems like she'd be a good friend to Ben, if not now then in the future - as well as Devi herself. He has put himself out there for Devi in a number of ways, and he has also been an undisputed asshole to her. You have no idea how much I enjoy the complexities of the loneliest boy in the world.
For this request, I'm fine with present-tense canon or with aging the kids up to their senior year of high school, college, or just beyond. I have definite ideas about where they'll all end up - please show me yours!
Palm Springs [90-minute movie] (This is currently available on Hulu in the US, and there is a "commentary track" version also available on Hulu.)
Nyles
Sarah Wilder
Hello, perfect movie! I don't know that I've ever seen a movie that showed me everything I wanted to see - every wild idea of "surely they'd try this?" or "I wish we could flash back to that" - until I saw this one. I adore the two main actors, both of whom I've loved in other projects as well, and who clash and spark so convincingly in this film that I not only would rather watch them fight than most other movie couples get together, but I want them to star together in any number of future projects.
Time is kind of meaningless when it comes to this movie, but I'd really like a sense of Nyles's lost life from before he entered the time-loop and what he has to go back to (I don't know if I buy that Fred really exists). Sarah says up front that she's a mess, but he is no less so, schlepping out to a wedding as the plus-one of a girlfriend he doesn't seem to like very much; it means something that they spend their first day after escaping the loop doing exactly what they did before, floating in someone else's pool and just hanging out. It's going to be difficult for them to adjust to lives that have consequences, but I want to see them try, and to try together.
Younger [84 22-minute episodes] (This is currently available on Hulu in the US.)
Charles Brooks
Diana Trout
Liza Miller
I watched this show from minute one to its last disappointing gasp, and have always been on Team Charles - that voice! that intelligence! those twinkly eyes! - but I'm not such a fan of how much of the canonical relationship makes Liza passive as she waits for Charles to come around (both after the big reveal and after the big question). So here I'd be okay with an AU, if that's where you want to go: show me Charles/Liza as a partnership of equals! Or if you'd rather stick to canon (prior to the finale), show me how they both find fulfillment in this relationship, as step-parents to each other's daughters.
I also desperately missed Diana Trout in the last season, so her comments on all of this relationship drama would be very welcome, as would Jay Malick's - it's very interesting to me that Charles and Liza, who are both interesting characters in their own right and independent of their relationship with each other, have these two very good mutual friends who would have excellent perspectives on both of them. Mostly I just want to see Team Book happy together.
So that's it! Thank you again for working on something for me, and happy writing!
All the best,
kunju
