Hi, everybody!
I know I don't use my lj as a place to talk about all the things that happen in my life - I'm not consistent enough with posting - but I wanted to make a space to talk briefly about something that just happened. On Saturday, a really ugly fannish/personal situation occurred that upset me greatly. I didn't post about it when it happened and I don't want to get into it now because I have no interest in naming names or raking things over again, but here's what I do want to say: to all of you who reached out to me and made sure I felt supported and safe, thank you so much. It's really extraordinary, that we've built this community of people who will go out of their way to help each other out, and I'm so pleased that I'm part of it. You're fantastic.
And there are awesome things happening all the time, like doing favors for friends and catching up on stuff that makes you happy. I spent a recent weekend addressing envelopes for my BFF's wedding (I can fake calligraphy and he and his fiancee both have atrocious penmanship) while we ate delicious snacks and watched Northanger Abbey and North & South and Pushing Daisies (BFF stayed for the first, skipped the second, and returned for the third). I've got dinner with some awesome fangirls happening in less than a week. I'm reading some fascinating books and rereading some favorites. I keep jotting down notes for my next long Sherlock fic and I've started both my story for
sherlock_remix and a birthday story for a friend. I've left prompts for
oxoniensis's latest Porn Battle. I've perfected the recipe for a delicious lemon-blueberry cake that doesn't require eggs. And there's always theater!
A few weeks ago, I saw Stick Fly, which I enjoyed a lot, and then Million Dollar Quartet, which needed more story to go along with the music. And then last night I saw Seminar and was about ten feet away from Alan Rickman doing his best sneery intellectual. He was magnificent. Actually, the whole production was really cooking - every person on stage (Lily Rabe, Hettienne Park, Hamish Linklater, Jerry O'Connell) was sharp and focused - but then again, I have a weakness for stories about storytelling (I think everyone should read Wonder Boys and watch The Fall). The show explored some really interesting ideas, all in ninety minutes. (Only a few people on my flist will get why this amused me, but the two male students in the play are named Douglas and Martin; no prizes for guessing which one suffered from a lack of confidence and which one was just a touch pompous.) In the next few weeks, I'll be seeing four more shows (War Horse, A Man of No Importance, Total Bent, and Porgy and Bess) and then I think I'll cool it for a while until it gets warmer. Though I did note that the National Theatre production of One Man, Two Guvnors is coming soon (was it worth seeing?), and I do still want to see Other Desert Cities and Wit.
Off to clean the apartment (got a friend spending the weekend at my place) and make some dinner. How are you guys doing?

Date: 2012-02-02 11:48 pm (UTC)As for One Man, Two Guvnors, BOOK IT! I started laughing about ten minutes in, and I was literally crying with laughter by the interval. It's worth getting there early too, for the skiffle band that plays beforehand - they're rather charming. Funniest play of the year, possibly that I've ever seen.

Date: 2012-02-03 01:04 am (UTC)Hee, surprise Douglas and Martin in random plays!

Date: 2012-02-03 01:21 am (UTC)Yes, when Martin - adorably stumbling Martin - was introduced and was sharply contrasted with the other guy, all I could think was, "It would be perfect if his name were Douglas." And then it was!

Date: 2012-02-03 01:19 am (UTC)I saw "War Horse" when I was in London for my sister's wedding. Oh my. The puppets are absolutely unbelievably believable. I loved it. I thought the story was a little sentimental etc, but I didn't care a bit, the magic of the puppets was so beautiful. I cried... several times. Once just about how beautiful the foal was.
:-)
I hope you like it!

Date: 2012-02-03 01:23 am (UTC)I was actually thinking of you when I booked my War Horse ticket, because you'd put up a behind-the-scenes vid in your journal a long time ago and then praised the puppetry. I will report back!

Date: 2012-02-03 01:22 am (UTC)Ten feet from Alan Rickman? Pardon me a moment—I'm going to go off in a corner and be very jealous.
The Fall? The movie with Lee Pace? From which my icon came (assuming LJ is showing the right icon)? I thought Brilliant Husband and I were almost the only people in the world to see it!

Date: 2012-02-03 01:27 am (UTC)And I nearly swallowed my tongue when I saw how close to the stage my seat was, and how very often the cast clustered near my seat. That VOICE in person is amazing.
I adore The Fall! Did you know there's fic for it? I adore how the story gets complicated by the negotiations between Roy and Alexandria.

Date: 2012-02-03 02:29 am (UTC)Second of all, please post a review of War Horse (I am living vicariously through everyone who gets to see it on stage--I am always in the wrong city and miss it by a month) when you go.
It is supposed to be visually stunning.
