Writer's Block: Pet central

Some animal rights activists are fighting to replace the term 'owner' with 'guardian' to convey a more balanced relationship between a person and her or his pet. Do you agree or disagree with the importance of this mission?

Well, I don't know about making a whole big fuss about the terminology; I'll leave that fight to others. But anyone who has ever lived with a pet can tell you that there's no "ownership" about it. Certainly not in the human to animal direction, at least. There are plenty of times when I've been walked across because I was in the way, been cuddled with solely for my body heat, or sifted through a litterbox or a back yard looking for excrement to dispose of...and I've certainly felt that I know my place in the relationship.

Last summer I was sitting outside with my cat. A neighbor asked, "Is she yours?" and the question kind of threw me a bit. I just don't think of her that way. She's hers.

"Guardian" is a good description though, too. But that term also works both ways.

[and yes, i realize that i've just done TWO cat-related posts in a row. we will soon return to the regularly scheduled slash programming]

staple-opolis

Been in a fantastic mood this week. I think it’s all the REM sleep which I'm now getting, which I’ve been so deprived of for so long. Been in an outright wacky mood, in fact! Except for going to the grocery store, that is. Remind me never ever ever to ever go in there before 9 p.m. People are losing all awareness of other shoppers around them.

Paid off the last of my Massage Therapist student loans. I now truly own that degree/certification/whatever you want to call it. Burned myself out earning it however, so I don’t use it. Should have bought a house. It’s all right, though -- this only took 14 months to pay; it took me ten years to pay off college. The most expensive things I own are my diplomas. Ah, how can we put a price on education?

Well sorry, I really have nothing substantive to talk about right now. But I'm posting some fascinating videos to view (under the cut).

Why so serious?

Seems I slept too well over the weekend; tonight's a sleepless one. But I already had more than my daily dose of Sandman, it's too late to go out walking, and there's nothing on LJ today, so I was watching Rifftrax clips on YouTube.

I do believe it was a bit of a mistake to watch the Dark Knight one. Maybe I just feel guilty for laughing. MST3K is one thing, where they need to do jokes in order to make inferior films watchable, but riffing through decent films spoils them for me a little bit. Not in a "How dare you touch my precious film?" way, but more in the sense of: "Thanks a lot; now I'll never think of anything else when I watch that scene."

baptizing the computer

Well, that was an adventure (hot tea - laptop fingerpad - happy dancing cat) but I think it will be okay. My fault for putting the mug down right next to the computer, but the cat bumped a few drops of tea down around the right-click left-click buttons. The cursor went berserk for a while and I slid strips of paper down there to soak up what I could. Seems okay now, but I won't be satisfied until a few days pass without incident. The thing that scares me most about computer catastrophes is when you don't get a chance to move off all your porn and embarrassing drivelly writing before taking it in for repairs.

I am sleeping like a madman on this new bed! (Appropriate icon is appropriate.) Pillow-top mattress. Just like being cradled. Not the easiest to roll out of because of the body-divot that you form, but it's soooo comfortable. And I got it at one-fifth retail price since our clients at work are furniture companies. The narcoleptic effect it has on me is just wonderful.
