The data on India's rise - and its future potential - is simply jaw-dropping. Set out at a round table at London's Institute of Directors (IoD) yesterday by Dr. Shashank Shah, director and senior specialist for higher education at NITI Aayog, the numbers - and their implications for the world - are hard to fully comprehend. India has become the world's fourth largest economy, with a GDP of almost $4 trillion now - but this is projected to rise more than SEVENFOLD to $30 trillion in the next 25 years. India is the most populous country in the world, and will remain so through the next century - and 50 per cent of the population is below the age of 25. That's 700 million people. India had just 20 universities after independence. Today it has 1,200, with 50,000 affiliated colleges and learning institutions. India has a student population of 45 million - and that's with a gross enrollment ratio of just 29 per cent, with an aspiration to increase this to 50 per cent. People - and their talent - will be the secret to India's further, remarkable rise. And education, higher education and research will be the key to unleashing India's talent onto the world. It is no wonder that Sir Steve Smith (pictured left), the UK government's international education champion said at the round table: "India presents one of the only opportunities I've seen in my career where I really can not overstate the potential." Thanks to Narendra Modi's #NEP2020 and #ViksitBharat 2047 visions, I'm convinced the potential will be realised. The reported upGrad acquisition of Unacademy, structured as a 100% share-swap, reflects a market that is now rewarding operating discipline, strategic fit, and a credible path to profitability over headline growth. Unacademy’s trajectory, from a peak valuation of roughly $3.5 billion to a far lower implied value in the current transaction context, is a reminder that capital raised and market visibility do not, on their own, sustain enterprise value. This transaction appears to reinforce three themes in education M&A: Consolidation is accelerating in scaled but pressured subsectors. Margin quality and business model durability now matter more than growth narrative. Strategic combinations are increasingly the preferred route where standalone outcomes have weakened. For founders, boards, and investors, the implication is straightforward: the window to position an education business before market conditions force the narrative is often narrower than expected. India’s education and training market is very large and growing fast, with tech (online/edtech) segments growing much faster than traditional/non‑tech segments, and competition is intense but fragmented outside a handful of large edtech brands. The opportunity for a new founder lies in picking specific segments (test prep, professional upskilling, corporate training, or vocational skilling) and niches where large players are not deeply focused, then building strong distribution and outcomes.​ Overall market size (INR Cr) India online education (consumer + higher ed + test prep etc.) was about USD 3.6B in 2025, projected to ~USD 23.9B by 2034 at 23.28% CAGR. At an exchange rate of ~INR 83/USD, this is ~INR 29,900 Cr in 2025 and ~INR 1,98,400 Cr by 2034.​ Historic data shows online education was INR 3,900 Cr in 2018 and projected to 36,030 Cr by 2024 at ~43.9% CAGR, indicating a steep scale‑up period from 2018–2024.​ Corporate training in India (largely non‑tech or blended) was USD 10.8B in 2024, i.e., ~INR 89,600 Cr, expected to reach USD 37.8B (~INR 3,13,700 Cr) by 2033 at 13.4% CAGR.​ Vocational training (short‑term skilling, certificates) in India was USD 1.29B in 2024 (~INR 10,700 Cr) and is projected to reach USD 1.95B (~INR 16,200 Cr) by 2033 at 4.7% CAGR.​ So, combining major “course” markets: Tech/online courses: ~INR 30,000–35,000 Cr currently, with fast growth.​ Non‑tech / offline‑dominant courses (corporate training + vocational, not counting full‑time schools/colleges): ~INR 1,00,000 Cr+ currently, but with slower average growth than online.​ Growth over last 5 years Tech / online courses (edtech) Online education grew from about INR 3,900 Cr in 2018 to a projected INR 36,030 Cr by 2024, implying a CAGR of ~44% during 2019–2024. The market then moderates to ~23% CAGR from 2025–2034 as it matures.​ Within online education, test prep and K‑12 segments saw some of the fastest growth (test prep projected ~50%+ CAGR 2019–2024), driven by competitive exams and better internet penetration.​ Post‑COVID, there is consolidation and slower funding, but user adoption remains structurally higher than pre‑2019, especially for working‑professional upskilling and hybrid courses.​ Non‑tech / offline courses Corporate training has grown at a strong double‑digit pace; estimates point to 13.4% CAGR from 2025–2033, with similar high‑single to low‑double‑digit growth in the preceding years driven by digital transformation and upskilling.​ Vocational training shows more modest growth at ~4.7% CAGR projected 2025–2033, driven by government schemes, gig work, and demand for short‑term skill‑based programs.​ Overall, non‑tech segments are growing, but at a slower blended pace than pure online edtech, and growth is often policy‑linked (NSDC, state missions, CSR, etc.).​

BUSINESS EDUCATION OVERHAUL: ACTIONABLE BLUEPRINT FOR INDIAN B-SCHOOLS India’s Business Management Education can no longer afford incremental tweaks. Our institutions must benchmark against global accreditation standards such as AACSB and EQUIS while tailoring content to the Indian context. To produce leaders fit for AI-powered, globally competitive markets, we must implement bold, measurable reforms now. 1. CURRICULUM REALIGNMENT A. Map Industry Needs: Convene sector panels (MSMEs, tech, finance) to pinpoint the top 10 skills for 2025–27. B. Embed Live Lab Projects: Require two semester-long consultancies with local enterprises, graded on real KPIs (revenue growth, cost savings, process optimisation). 2. MICRO-CREDENTIALS & LIFELONG LEARNING A. EdTech Collaborations: Launch three stackable certificate tracks—AI Ethics, Sustainable Finance, Digital Marketing—in 6–8-week modules, accessible online and offline. B. Learning Passport: Mandate every graduate to earn two micro-credentials within 12 months post-placement to validate adaptability. 3. FACULTY TRANSFORMATION A. Corporate Sabbaticals: Faculty must undertake 2-month residencies in start-ups or MNC strategy teams annually, then integrate fresh case studies back in class. B. Peer Learning Network: Create a national forum with mentorship circles, webinars and resource libraries for educators to co-author research and share ed-tech tools. 4. TECHNOLOGY & ETHICS INTEGRATION A. AI-Driven Assessment: Pilot an AI analytics platform leveraging NLP to provide unbiased, data-backed feedback on presentations, group work and assignments. B. Ethics Incubator: Host hands-on workshops tackling live social-impact challenges, culminating in a “Responsible Leader” certification. 5. GOVERNANCE & TRANSPARENCY A. Annual Reports: Publish metrics on graduate employability, starting salaries, student satisfaction and employer feedback. B. Advisory Boards: Appoint three external industry leaders and one Alumni with voting rights on curriculum updates and strategic initiatives. IMMEDIATE NEXT STEPS: I. Form an AICTE working group, engaging CII and FICCI, to pilot these reforms in 10 institutes by late 2025. II. Tap CSR budgets and international grants to fund tech platforms, faculty residencies and Ethics Incubators. III. Launch a central portal by January 2026 to track micro-credentials and publicise school performance dashboards. IV. Establish a cross-industry scholarship fund to support students from marginalised communities. V. Host an inaugural national summit by mid-2026 to review progress, disseminate insights and forge partnerships. VI.
