Loantap secures $6.2 million in fresh funding from July Ventures and existing investors 📌 Pune-based digital lending platform LoanTap Financial Technologies has raised $6.2 million in fresh equity funding led by July Ventures. Existing investors 3one4 Capital, Avaana Capital, Kae Capital and the Swapurna Family Office also participated in the round. 📌 With this, the total capital raised by the company stands at around $26 million. IPO-bound fintech startup BharatPe has appointed former Paytm senior vice president Ajit Kumar as its new CTO, following the departure of its previous CTO, Pankaj Goel, a few months ago. BharatPe said Kumar will lead the startup’s technology strategy and drive innovations across its payments and lending platforms. A few months ago, following discussions with Fareed Ahmad Sheik, we highlighted how the current zero MDR model necessitates innovation in monetization, specifically through RuPay credit cards on UPI. Is the product function in Indian fintech weaker than in the US? Not really. It’s simply different — because the role Product plays and the culture it operates in are fundamentally not the same. In US fintech (Stripe, Plaid, Square), Product is the strategic engine. PMs drive long-term vision, influence architecture decisions, shape monetization, and operate with true ownership alongside Engineering and Design. In India, Product sits in a far more ops-heavy, regulation-heavy, and field-driven environment. Sales, compliance, and distribution realities shape a larger part of the roadmap. PMs often operate with tighter constraints and more external dependencies — not less capability. The culture also differs. US teams rely on strong writing habits, data-led decision-making, experimentation, and deep PM–Engineering–Design partnership. Indian fintech culture is evolving — still influenced by escalation-led prioritization, centralised decision-making, and uneven data maturity. Different markets. Different constraints. Different incentives. The RBI has just released a new Master Direction for Payment Aggregators (Sept 15, 2025) – and it’s a big one for India’s digital payments ecosystem. Here are some of the key takeaways: ✅ Applies to both online, physical (POS), and cross-border PAs. (Payment Gateways still excluded as they don’t handle funds) ✅ Capital requirements raised – ₹15 Cr net worth to apply, ₹25 Cr within 3 years (for non-bank PAs) ✅ Stronger governance norms – fit & proper criteria for directors, RBI nod needed for ownership/control changes ✅ Consumer-first approach – transparent pricing, quick dispute resolution, refunds back to original payment method ✅ Cybersecurity gets serious – PCI-DSS compliance, fraud prevention frameworks, annual CERT-In audits ✅ For cross-border payments – separate inward/outward accounts, ₹25 lakh per transaction cap, strict FEMA compliance ✅ KYC/AML tightened – PAN & address verification, FIU-IND registration, ongoing monitoring of merchants ✅ Escrow accounts made stricter – mandatory settlement timelines, limited permitted debits/credits, interest allowed only on “core portion” ✅ Reporting obligations – monthly, quarterly, and annual filings made more robust ✅ Old guidelines (2020, 2021, 2023) now repealed – everything consolidated under this single Master Direction Why does this matter?
