If I see another video along the lines of 'wow that wacky Soviet Union made these ornate bus stations for no reason, totally unnecessary, what a bizarre fact of history!' I'm going to start killing the hostages

God forbid art exist in public for free, God forbid people get to see art in public for free in their day to day lives, God forbid a bus stop be more than a rectangle plastered in fucking advertising, fuck

This is why graffiti art rules by the way. Take back our spaces, our walls, make them the canvases of the people.

I’ve been thinking on it a bit further and I think that the reason that Nolan’s odyssey has the problems that it does is that it’s afraid to be seen as unserious for even one second.

Like they could’ve and in my opinion should’ve had Zendaya as Athena descend from the heavens in full battle armor but they didn’t. It would’ve been accurate to the original text.

We can’t have anything look rediculous in this movie though I guess. Can’t have a cyclops thinking that a guy is named Nobody. Can’t have a drugged up island of silly lotus eaters that Odysseus has to physically drag his men away from.

Anyways I did mostly enjoy this movie I swear but I wish they’d gotten silly with it even just once.

Not only is it never allowed to be silly, it's never allowed to be glorious, to be powerful, to be beautiful.

Circe does not have a magnificent palace filled with nymphs and golden furniture. Calypso does not weave on a golden loom, her cave full of mighty trees dripping with grape vines. There is no Nausicaa and Arete in their palace of Orichalcum and magic boats which pilot themselves. Penelope does not have a wedding bed carved from a mighty olive tree, rooted to the rock of Ithaca.

Because Nolans movie is about the collapse of a cultural empire because people didn't respect God's laws enough. It's about a civilization degrading and fading, so he has no use for any of the majesty and wonder and humor of the homeric text. Everything needs to be grimy and decaying, collapsing in on itself.

And Adaptations are allowed to be different and it's broadly a good thing to have a strong directorial vision.

But it does remind me of Nolans Batman, which had no time for boy wonders and found family and silly puzzles because it needed to be about the righteous necessity of the post 9/11 surveillance state.

it's crazy how plausible all the shit the corporations do in the murderbot diaries is. that one scene when murderbot was talking to those humans who had signed a 20 year corporate work contract and it asked them if the contract specified 20 years by the standard local calendar or by a proprietary calendar created by the company was downright unsettling 😬 if the ceos of modern earth companies read these books they would probably start crying because the government won't let them do most of this in real life.

hey fun fact this has absolutely happened before. part of the push to standardize time/timezones was because factory employers had clocks set to the pace of their machinery. meaning of the workers were not doing enough, time would run slower until they had reached their goal. there is historical precedent.

Yup. All the shit modern Capitalism is pulling is mostly a rework of the shit Capitalism did in the 1800s. This is WHY people fought and died to unionize and pass labor laws. Now those labor laws have been weakened or companies found loopholes (ie, gig workers are contract workers and not protected by many labor laws) so they're pulling the same shit again.

The Corporation Rim, of course, HAS no labor laws so the companies have been able to crank up their evil to 11 because nothing is stopping them. It is genuinely a really good bit of worldbuilding on Martha Well's part, she's done a great job projecting the tech bro bullshit of our times into the future that Musk, Zuckerberg etc would build if they could.

I subscribed to UNNAMED STREAMING SERVICE a few days ago and gave the login info to all my friends, as one does, but one of them went in and turned on 2-factor authentication and set the phone number to her own cell phone, locking me out of the account

It was an accident and we got it fixed but for a brief moment the betrayal and fury was so great I blacked out and was possessed by the spirit of like a 19th century naval officer, I was pacing around my room like "TO THINK THAT JUDAS HIMSELF NUMBERS HIMSELF AMONG MY COMPATRIOTS"
