The amount of people in the replies of this acting like walking your cat on a leash is some kind of crime is why I am not a fan of most dog owners
walking yoir cat on a leash is in fact the ONLY way to ethically enrich your cat outdoors. If a cat is the type who wants walkies - this is how you do it.
And further more, this shouldn't just be about cats. This is about fellow hikers, children, fragile folks with limited balnce, people with animal trauma, people with phobias, people with allergies, surrounding wildlife, and peace of mind.
If you don't keep your dog on a leash when interacting in the outside world (a place with limitless unknown and unseen variables) you should be prepared for the outcome you may inadvertently hurt someone or something, or deeply ruin their day. And if that doesn't bother you, please be prepared for the very real possibility that a person who sees a dog off its leash coming towards them may act in any number of ways out of self defense at its your fault - not theirs - if they do.
Control the environment of your domesticated friend.
Also, like, dogs chase animals off of cliffs ALL THE TIME. My dad was a mountain rescuer, and they’d practice special dog-rigging training on my childhood dog. And I’d always hear stories about the owners who would climb down to try to save the dog. They weren’t always happy stories.
So, yeah. Keep your dog on leash when you’re out in public. Even if you don’t give a crap about other people, it’s better for your dog

a few more people have asked whether my thesis will be published when it’s finished, and it’s exciting people want to read what i’ve written! : )
the thesis itself will not be published. there are several boring academic reasons for that, but what matters most to me is that there is such limited time between my fieldwork and the turn-in date that the people i’ve interviewed will not have a chance to read what i’ve written about them before completion of the thesis. i am very dedicated to reciprocal ethnography, and i feel strongly that those i have interviewed and whose stories and knowledge i’ve been allowed to use in my work should be allowed to read, contemplate, and respond to what i’ve written about them before publication.
moreover, i’d be thrilled to include their own responses to my analyses in any publication, if they were interested in sharing those thoughts (I know for a fact at least one of them is!). why should i get to ask people to share their lives and knowledge with me, write up what i think about it, and make that the end of the conversation? if they think i’ve gotten it all wrong, somehow misunderstood them, etc., shouldn’t they get to say so to the same audiences i’m presenting to?
so there is more work to be done with the people i’ve worked with before i publish anything which involves them.
i DO hope to eventually refine the thesis into an article worthy of publication. if i am published i’ll have to decide whether to share that here and henceforth link this blog to my academic career. there are things which worry me, but it’s also something i would like to do very much, since the support from all of you made this possible for me in the first place!
The interviews with fisherpeople i’ve conducted, along with some other material, will be deposited to Ireland’s National Folklore Collection for public access. When/how they’ll make it available will be out of my hands, though! But in theory the “raw data” without my interpretations etc. will eventually be accessible that way.
That all said, I will definitely find a way to share some aspects of my thesis when all is said and done. Maybe some videos or art.
