mental tune-up
6 Mar 2014 03:18 pmI re-read the Brother Cadfael Chronicles in january, and heard about '100 drabbles for 100 fandoms'. I couldn't name 100 fandoms so its unlikely I'll attempt 100 drabbles.
This exercise is more derust my brain than anything. :-) Opinion/silence equally accepted. :-)
A/N: Probably makes more sense if you've read the book.
Cadfael: Ellis Peters
Set in 'Once Corpse Too Many'
Sept 1138: If he had approached Shrewsbury with one woman on his mind, one to whom his father had affianced him in childhood, Hugh Beringar, newly pledged in his fealty, left it with quite another there enthroned.
~*~
Horseback towards Shrewsbury, it had been in his mind to find Godith, and, if it were possible, get her away safe from the coil winding about the castle and all therein. A wry smile barely showed on his lips. Doubtful if she would have ado with him now they were on opposing sides, and he, for his part, would as lief chose a woman of his own allegiance to wife.
Was it perhaps fate that Mistress Aline Siward should cross his path at the King’s tent, waiting to be granted audience?
What charm had a poor recollection of a fat, dark-haired little girl against this slight and shy woman, all primrose and youthful grace made more austere in her mourning? In attendance without, he had been privy to all speech, and as charmed as the King’s officer who escorted her away, her duty done.
Horseback towards Maesbury in a crisp early September to acquaint his steward with changes, and to make all ready for the arrival of his bride, Hugh reflected with satisfaction on his gains; Godith safely away to her Empress with a man of her choosing, achieving justice for a murdered man at the cost of a few drops of his own blood, a new ally in brother Cadfael, the King’s command to keep His justice as Deputy Sheriff, and the consolation of a wife to cherish.

Date: 11 Mar 2014 03:56 am (UTC)I enjoyed the writing here and managed to follow most of the snippet just based on your A/N. I like the 'Horseback toward Shrewsbury' and 'Horseback towards Maesbury' symmetry. And this line: 'What charm had a poor recollection of a fat, dark-haired little girl against this slight and shy woman, all primrose and youthful grace made more austere in her mourning?'
It's fun to read your writing again!

Date: 11 Mar 2014 09:22 pm (UTC)She has character development, and characters you will *love* to see get their come-uppance---even amongst the brothers!
I imagine there are probably ebooks of the series by now, if you fancy giving one a try. I bought each as they were published (crumbs-that dates me!) and devoured them at one sitting.
It's fun to read your writing again! :-) Thankies! TBH, I feel a bit hinky, still writing what is effectively fan-fic, but certain folk live in my head, and I know I'm committing one of the Ultimate Writing Sins in saying they won't walk out. (I think is offences against Rule 25, according to Jack M Bickham) Whatever, I say, and keep trying. :-)
