phantom (limb) pain

The pain that accompanies the sensation that an amputated limb is still present. The phantom limb pain is really bad today, ugh. It's so weird to have pain in a part of my body that isn't even there! A: "I just can't understand what causes someone to feel phantom pain." B: "Apparently the brain receives faulty messages from nerves in the remaining portion of the amputated limb."

phantom limb

A limb that still feels to one as though it is present, despite having been amputated. Sometimes accompanied by physical pain. A: "Doctor, it's crazy—I know my leg is gone, but sometimes, it genuinely feels like it's still there!" B: "Don't worry, amputees commonly feel phantom limbs." A: "I just can't understand what causes someone to feel like they have a phantom limb." B: "Apparently the brain receives faulty messages from nerves in the remaining part of the amputated limb."

phantom limb syndrome

Chronic pain that accompanies the sensation that an amputated limb is still present. If you continue to feel pain where your arm used to be, it's possible that you have phantom limb syndrome. Don't worry, this is not uncommon among amputees.
