1. Literally, to be in one's field of vision. Yeah, the box is in sight, but I can't reach it from here. The target is within sight. Awaiting the order to fire. Hey, stay low, the cops are in sight.
2. To be close to happening or being achieved. After all your years of hard work, an Olympic gold medal is finally in sight! Now that you've gotten another stellar report card, I think the title of "valedictorian" is well within sight. We've been saving for years, and a bigger house is finally within sight!
