- Controls -

No walking in this game! Use the arrow keys (⬅️ ⬇️ ⬆️ ➡️) to shoot an explosive fireball in the opposite direction you want to go and use the blast to propel yourself forward. Hold for rapid fire.

Press ❎ to reset the level you are currently on.

🅾️ button is mapped to 'c' on a computer.

Press the ⏯️ icon, ENTER key, or P key to pause and unpause on computer (⛔️ on mobile).

- Helpful Tactics -

Press multiple arrow keys at the same time to shoot multiple fireballs. This can be used to move diagonally (ex. ⬆️ + ➡️ = ↗️)

You can also launch yourself up towards tiles in the ceiling and bounce off of them

Holding down one arrow key moves you backwards a little bit. This can be good for lining up your position.

Shooting at the ground multiple times before landing by holding down the ⬇️ arrow key can give you a big upward boost!

Instead of mashing the arrow keys randomly, try slowing down and focusing on precision and timing. (Though button mashing can sometimes be useful in some rare scenarios)

- Development -

This game was made for the Ecaroh's Alchemy Jam #6. I first started PICO-8 about a month ago and this is the first full game I've made outside of Scratch. I've learned a lot about PICO-8 over the past week, and game development in general, and I'm really proud with the result. I guess you could say it was a BLAST! Get it?

I'm also not entirely sure the last level is even possible, so have fun :)

- Backstory (for people who care) -

After discovering a new Wand of Fireballs, your overuse of the spell has driven your Dungeon Master to insanity and curses you to only use fireballs for everything.

Fighting a single goblin? Fireballs.

Tossing someone an item? Fireballs.

Breathing? Fireballs.

Additionally, the DM created a whole dungeon just for you so when you repeatedly hit that one spike right before the end of the level, you get sick of using fireball and give up magic entirely. They didn't have enough time to plan it all out though, so the end is pretty anticlimactic if you do finish.

- Credits -

All art, level design, mechanics, music, and code were made in PICO-8 by me.

The key is an 8-bit adaption of the Ecaroh's Alchemy Jam #6 theme asset.

The wizard hat is from another project I'm currently working on.

These are the tutorials and websites I used as inspiration or to figure out how to code things I didn't know how to:
