Ontology notes edit
Our ontology consolidates IANA and ICANN status indicators into five major groups. It does not attempt to be a 1:1 model.
Proposed edit
This is an ICANNWiki-internal umbrella status assigned to gTLDs that either entered a demonstrable application process or received substantial coverage from credible sources indicating a concrete intention to apply. It should not be used for merely rumored, speculative, or unsupported applications.
Submitted edit
This group covers the early lifecycle stages, including statuses such as “Application Received,” “Under Evaluation,” or “Pre-delegation Testing.” Any TLD that has been proposed and is pending further processing falls into this group.
Delegated edit
TLDs that have been assigned into the DNS root zone are classified as active. This includes source labels such as “Delegated,” “Delegated, pending production,” “Active,” or “Production,” unless there is clearer evidence that the TLD is being retired or has been removed.
Retired edit
This category collects TLDs that are in a controlled decommissioning phase. IANA reports and board resolutions may refer to these states as “Retiring” or “Retired for transition.” Such domains are no longer intended for new registrations.
Removed edit
TLDs that have been completely expunged from the DNS root zone fall into this group. IANA assigns this status once the deletion process is complete. An example is .zr, the ccTLD from the former country of Zaire.
