“the parallels between Zuko and Sokka-” hey HEY. I am grabbing you. The parallels between Katara and Azula. Both the younger, gifted bender. Each one being the inverse of the other: a living, breathing what if. Katara being horrified at what her bending can do when pushed to its limits vs Azula always trying to push hers further. Katara instinctively trusting everyone so easily, even though it burns her sometimes, and Azula saying trust is for fools, fear is the only reliable way but still losing everyone she cares about in the end. Katara yelling at her dad and being hugged in return vs Azula doing everything possible to please her father still being harshly reprimanded, so you know exactly why they both turned out the way that they did. Katara’s trauma being connected to losing a mother vs Azula’s being connected to having a mother. Katara ultimately being the one to take down Azula and standing over her, staring pitifully because that’s who she could have been, in another life. is this thing on

Its 4 am and I am having a silly thoughts. Why are some Sanders Sides characters drawn as blond, and some basically never? Cause the sides are played by the same man, people can have pretty free reign on how the sides look. But I feel like I only see blond Patton, Janus and Roman. Just because of complimentary colors?

Also, on a more serious, half related note,, I sometimes feel iffy about the race bending in the fandom (and my own work). Like I feel like of all the characters that get portrayed as POC, it's the creativity twins (often times hispanic). But Roman being the romantic emotional (not perse intelligent) dude and remus as the violent sex obsessed brother,, it's matches some stereotypes.

Besides that,, when the sides are drawn as POC, they are almost always light skinned. I've seen very little black characterization. Especially Virgil, Janus, Patton. Its like the characters that get infantalised the most, or are seen as caretakers, get associated with whiteness (for Patton and Virgil. I think maybe Janus gets associated with aristocrat/salesman tropes. The powerful, intelligent, wealthy character. Also associated with whiteness). Or maybe there's plenty of content, and I just missed it?

Like, why haven't I seen Muslim/West-Asian sides? Sanders sides has a lot of religious themes and characters with deep connection to art and philosophy. Seems it would match? Or AU through a cultural lens seems like it would fit, instead of standard ambiguously American.

Lately I've been focused on being able to draw the sides more realistically/like Thomas,, but I do wanna be more thoughtful and work on my creative design more. The white gaze is lazy

Believe me when I say, being a person of color in this fandom for roughly 5-6 years, this place is extremely hostile and harmful towards us because our identities is seen as a "threat" to their sense of comfort.

I'm South Asian, Middle Eastern/SWANA and Muslims, and alot of these aspects about my identity has been viewed by such a racist lens due to the ignorance and lack of education by the majority white audience. Any attempts to try and talk about the issues of racism in this fandom would get you manhunted down for having the audacity to "ruin their comfort". Our day to day lives are a discomfort for them cause they wanna play innocence to their character having an unconscious (or worse concious) racial bias and judgement. So they would rather POC shut up than have the difficult conversations.

Despite the years and years of racism I've faced in this fandom, even having to delete my old Instagram account cause the racism and bigotry was so severe, I still do make my sides South Asian and Muslims cause I'll be damned if I don't "shove my identity" down their throats the way they tried to push me out.

I got aus on aus of my desi designs, all drawings and designs and lore and so much and it has been the most fun I've had in my life when interacting with a fandom.
