meet you where the lights are

[new moderator]

Hello All,

Sadly, I just don't have the time and resources to run this community the way I envisaged. I still think it's a great idea, but it needs someone who's reading a lot of HP fic, or able to chivvy people into posting their ideas, or a new outlook/structure.

Is there anyone who would like to take over the running of this community? It could be more than one person, also. Comment here: I'll screen the comments to this post, or email me on veryblythe at yahoo dot co dot uk.

I would like this to still be a repository for clever fanon ideas, but other than that, you're free to do as you wish.

Please pass along the message to anyone you think may be interested.

Cheers
Blythe

[TOPIC] Spells

Dear All,

My apologies for not posting topics for some time. I instigated this project at a time when I had a lot going on, and have let it fall by the wayside; this is me picking it back up again. Hopefully if you're here you're still interested in the Fanon Lexicon idea and are keen to see more. This community won't work without participation though, so please, if you think you've got even a small contribution to make, please do go ahead and join in!

In order to keep this going, I'd be grateful to have some sort of co-mod. If anyone would like to assist with putting together topics or collating responses, please drop me an email or comment below.

Below you'll find a new topic post--a very general one that hopefully we'll get a lot of contributions for--ORIGINAL SPELLS.

(ORIGINAL) SPELLS

One of the most imaginative and fun parts of JKR's universe is the language of spells. As authors, we love to make up new ones to suit our purposes; as readers, it's always interesting to see what original ideas people come up with.

Canon: The Harry Potter Lexicon discusses canon spells here.

Fanon ideas we're looking for include:

- Original spells and their incantations, mechanisms and swish-and-flick requirements
- New twists on old spells
- Interesting details on the casting of spells - who can do them, how hard they are, if there are any special requirements.

... and anything else you might think of!

Please comment with your fanon references and ideas to this post.

Before you comment, please read the hp_flexicon guidelines and use the format for posting outlined there -- it will help us hugely later on when we need to organise all of the information and ideas we hope you'll post.

Thank you!

SPORTS AND GAMES

Apart from Exploding Snap and Wizards Chess, Quidditch appears to reign supreme for sporting activity in the Wizarding World. What else do magical folk do with their leisure time? Do they play altered versions of muggle sports and games? How do people keep fit?

Canon: The Harry Potter Lexicon discusses what we know about sports, games and leisure activities here.

Fanon ideas we're looking for include things like:

- References to sports (outdoors and indoors), either invented or a twist on muggle versions
- Adult games - card games, board games, party games... again, either "wizarding" or different from the muggle versions in some way.
- Childrens games, same deal as the above
- Clever explanations for the lack of sports besides Quidditch in canon
- Observations on social class as relates to leisure activities
- NOT fanon additions to what we know about Quidditch (possibly for another post)

... and anything else you might think of! Remember, they don't have to be the focus of the story--passing references are fine as well!

TOPIC: Medical Magic

MEDICAL MAGIC

Medicine and healing in the wizarding world share superficial similarities to the muggle world (hospitals, healers, chemical concoctions to heal the sick), but there seem to be interesting differences implicit in JKR's descriptions of health, illness and healing.

Canon: The Harry Potter Lexicon discusses what we know about St Mungo's and medical magic.

Fanon ideas we're looking for include things like:

- The role and training of Healers and other medical personnel
- Who becomes a healer? And why?
- Details about St Mungo's - and other medical institutions
- Details about Madam Pomfrey and the informary at Hogwarts
- Spells, potions, lotions, treatments, procedures
- Magical maladies (i.e. that muggles don't have)
- Ideas about wizarding biology and how that affects wizard medicine

... and anything else you might think of!

Please comment with your ideas to this post.

ADMIN: Owl Topic still open

Just a reminder: the Owls and Owl Post topic is still open. I'll keep it open until Wednesday for people to add their suggestions, and then make an index post.

Thank you to everyone who has commented so far, and please, if you read anything or have any ideas, please do link us to them!

[The next topic will be Medical Magic, so we'll want to hear all about those spells, theories and mediwizard training schools you've read or written.]

[TOPIC] Owls and Owl Post

Note: First topic! It is deliberately something small and specific where the mechanics are not fully explained in canon--hopefully just the sort of topic where fanfic authors have come up with interesting angles and explorations.

OWLS AND OWL POST

Owls serve at least two purposes in the wizarding world; as pets/familiars, and as the carriers of postal communications.

The Harry Potter Lexicon discusses what we know about owls and the postal system in canon here.

Fanon ideas we're looking for include things like:

- Names and types of owls that characters have.
- Details about the Owlery at Hogwarts.
- Details of the Post Office in Hogsmeade.
- Details of how the postal system is organised and maintained, both nationally and internationally.
- If and how postal owls are trained.
- How long the owl post system has been in place--and why owls?
- How owls function as familiars.

... and anything else you might think of!

This week, please post only IDEAS (your own or those you've come across in fics you've read and/or art you've enjoyed); at the end of the week, we'll collate all ideas in a single post and open the topic for discussion. In other words, bite your tongues and sit on your hands, and hold your comments about the cool ideas people post until we open the floor for discussion next week.

Thank you!
