Last words of the late Arthur Jerymn
Last words of the late Arthur Jerymn
Created in 7 days for Brackeys Game Jam 2026.1. Theme: Strange Places
Ever wonder how formal a seance could be? Why not type it down and make it on the record!
Important Hints
Some explanation of the correction mechanics. Correction can be done via
- Backspace (using the backspace key) to the position you want to clear out
- Put in the correction stripe (using the tab key). This should insert the stripe in front of the type head
- Type the same wrong letters you wish to clear
So, for example, if you typed "A quick brown dog..." and want to change "dog" to 'fox", you will need to backspace the caret to the "d" in "dog", put in the correction stripe, and type "dog" once again. The "dog" should be now cleared, and you can type fox in the correct position again.
You can zoom in while at the typewriter view as well. Doing so will show what letters are currently visible and may require correction.
If you cannot type [:] try using the key next to the [L] Key.
Synopsis
You play as a professional medium service provider in the late Victorian era. Being hired by the wife of the recently deceased Arthur Jerymn, you are tasked with retrieving the missing will through your spiritual power. But beware, speaking to the dead is a dangerous endeavour, and can easily take one's life if not careful. Can you complete your job safely and uncover the hidden secrets of Arthur Jerymn?
Gameplay
The game is a typing game with a horror twist. The goal of the game is to correctly type out the true words of the dead while ignoring all decoys. An arrow ornament will point towards the correct words as guidance. The game features a simulated typewriter machine, with the correction mechanics being the highlight of the simulation. The game will get progressively harder with other anomalies such as possessed typing and key swapping, and challenge the typing skill of the player. Incorrectly typing or taking too long to do so would result in the player losing the game.
The game also contains a short story that slowly unravels itself during the gameplay and would conclude neatly at the true ending of the game.
Controls
- [Left Ctrl], [Right Ctrl]: Toggle between typewriter and room
- [Left Mouse Button]: Zoom in both typewriter and room view
- [Tab]: Toggles between correction stripe and none.
- [Keyboard Keys]: Typing
Theme interpretation
- "Strange Places" as "strange" and "places" literally, where you are in a strange and uncanny room when performing the seance, the words are in strange places in the room, and the key might swap to different places on the typewriter".
