A Decade on Hive

in #story25 days ago (edited)

Prior to 2016, if you would have told me a relatively niche, decentralized social media platform that paid in cryptocurrency would have been the key to making my dreams come true I would have told you you were smoking something. However, this is precisely what happened.

When I was just starting out as a writer in the early 1990s the old gatekeepers of the publishing world still, very much had the industry locked down. Back then the literary world was more like an exclusive club that you had to be invited into than a meritocracy. Opportunities were nearly non-existent for indie authors.

The widespread growth of the internet in the mid-90s changed the literary landscape tremendously. The internet made it possible for exceptional writing to get noticed outside of the traditional publishing world. Next came social media and self-publishing through Amazon. This allowed indie authors to share their work with millions of readers for almost no cost if they could market themselves effectively.

2006 to 2012, these were the golden years.

I created an author page on Facebook, began building a global audience, and for the first time in my life began selling enough books that it made a real difference in my life. Facebook changed everything in 2012 when they started requiring businesses to pay to reach their own audiences. This change didn’t impact most businesses because paying for outreach reliably translated into more sales so it made sense to fork over some bucks to Zuck. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case for a lot of indie authors. Indie authors needed extraordinarily large audiences to generate even moderate sales. The readership we worked so hard to build withered, almost overnight.

2012 to 2016 were some seriously challenging years for me. My corporate job became unbearably stressful and book sales dried up. Honestly, I nearly was ready to throw in the towel. Almost like magic, Hive (I don’t use the “S” word anymore) appeared at precisely the perfect time.

I published my first post here on the blockchain July 5th of 2016. At first all I heard was crickets, nada, almost no engagement. It took over a month of writing and patience before I started getting noticed here. When people finally did discover me it felt as though I was swept up into a cyclone of good fortune for the first time in my life. I started posting my poetry and my novel, Alarm Clock Dawn, in installments a little later that summer.

What happened next changed my life more than any other single thing ever has. Post payouts eventually grew larger than my monthly income. By the end of that year our debts were paid off. By the autumn of 2017 I handed in my two week notice at my corporate job, at long last, writing full-time after about twenty-three years of trying.

Having the privilege of doing what I love for a living has been one of the greatest joys and blessings of my life. Sometimes I still have to pinch myself. Hive, and each of you who supported me along the way, gave me that gift. I’ll never be able to sufficiently thank the community for that.

I ask myself two things fairly often:

  1. What did I do to deserve all this? For the life of me, I can’t come up with any good reasons. There are probably a million writers out there who are more talented than me; and

  2. What would my life have been like without Hive? Every time, I shudder at the thought.

Both of these things keep me humble, grateful, and posting.

When we begin to get disappointed about token prices and lack of growth/engagement here on Hive it’s very important to step outside of our bubble and look around. Inarguably, this is still the best there is and, quite honestly, it’s not even close.

To my friends who are still here and those who no longer are, you will forever hold a special place in my heart. I appreciate all of the kindness, support, friendship, and wonderful memories we’ve made throughout these last ten years. A few of us who began in 2016 are still here, a great many have left, some have even passed on. To the mentors who’ve helped me on this platform—thank you for being the only ones who ever opened this kind of door for me. You didn’t have to do it. I hope you realize what a profound significant difference you made in this author’s life.

Hive has been a consistent blessing in my life—through all kinds of changes, ups and downs, losses and wins. Despite how you might be feeling about Hive at present, keep something in mind. Even after the epic payouts ended Hive remained a valuable motivator and incubator for my writing. My last four published books were born from Hive posts.

If nothing else, my story serves as proof of the value and potential of this platform in changing peoples' lives. If it can happen to me it can happen to any one of you. You only have to create your niche and build your brand. Don’t give up, keep writing, keep connecting, above all else keep caring for and supporting one other. Despite how bleak things might look, lightning can strike twice. We can overcome whatever challenges we face if we work together.

I’ll be hitting the road in a few days to help celebrate my Mom's 82nd birthday and will be away until July so I wanted to get these thoughts down and posted while I had sufficient time to do it.

Thank you all and much love to you! Cheers to another ten years.

Congratulations on overcoming difficult times and experiencing a rebirth with Hive. You've gone through a wonderful turning point. I believe what inspires your story isn't just your success, but also the patience and perseverance you've shown. Many people see the results and give up immediately. But behind those results lie new opportunities waiting for you. You've seized that opportunity exceptionally well. The power that unites people on this platform and encourages everyone to support each other is the feeling of being part of a family. At its best, Hive brings people together, creates opportunities, and gives creators a voice. I wish you many successful years of inspiring others with your new writings on your Hive journey.

Thank you. The crazy thing is I almost never began. Someone recommended the platform to me in May of 2016 and I had a difficult time logging in (there was a glitch). I forgot about it for over a month. Finally I sent a message to customer support and they unlocked my account and I was able to log in in early July. It was a great opportunity that almost didn't happen.

Congratulations on reaching this milestone. 10 years here is such a great journey.
Happy anniversary.

It's been a wild ride. This just makes me wish I had discovered it earlier. I really missed the golden era. Maybe there will be another one some day...

That it has! I’m hoping we see a renaissance here soon. It wouldn’t be impossible!

Oh my, what an achievement! Happy Anniversary!!

Congrats, and this place sure would not be the same without you! Happy Birthday to your mom.

Thanks so much. I'm glad to hear the writing has been memorable! I'll tell her! She always reads the comments so she'll probably see it too. : )

congrats on 10 years. A very interesting journey.

Birthday wishes to your mom. Have a good time.

Congratulations on the ten year milestone! Your story is incredible, to be able to make more than a day job from writing online is almost unbelievable...

Who knows what future holds, might as well keep stacking Hive Power in case one day there is going to be another giant pump...

Thank you! Sometimes I can't even believe it. There's no reason for me not to hang on at this point. I'd love to see a renaissance take place here. For that to happen I think we'd need to simplify onboarding (QR code) and find a way to attract new users. I've made a lot of new friends in the Tesla community, they're fiercely loyal to X but I think I could convince some of them to cross-post here on Hive. If we grow the user-base the token price would theoretically take care of itself.

Yes, it is all about the user base, if we had as many users as Facebook or X the price of Hive would not be at 5 cents... More like at $15. I heard about some better onboarding tools that are in the works, but I don't think they feature QR code...

I'm glad to hear some things are in the works. It would be interesting to sponsor something like a "Hive recruitment campaign" to help grow user base where each person makes a pledge to onboard at least ten new users in a year or something like that. At the end winners could be chosen and given some kind of reward. It would be tricky because people would find a way to exploit/gamify it but it could work. I think some kind of effort like this might be the key. Maybe I'll write a post about that. We'd need to find some sponsors to provide the rewards. I'll have to let that idea ruminate for a bit. We'd probably need a dedicated team to help people who have a difficult time onboarding. I've heard a lot of people give up before they even start posting.

Ten years is a great number! Thanks to Hive, I've met excellent writers and people like you. I hope better times return soon. I also hope the celebration is perfect and full of memorable moments. 82 is also a beautiful age to celebrate. Hugs

Ten years is unbelievable! It's gone so fast. Thank you Nancy! I hope we can turn things around here too. This place means a lot to me and I can see so much more potential in it. I wish you a wonderful week!

A decade... Congratulations 🎉 I joined Hive after the split, and it's been one of the best decisions. I befriended incredible people on this platform, and you're definitely one of them. Reading your poems and stories, as well as your posts about life, tech, and beyond, has enriched my life. Thank you for being a beacon of light here on Hive.

Thanks Krisz! I'm glad you decided to join and it makes me so happy that my writing has had that impact on you. I've enjoyed your writing as well and am enjoying your book!

Welcome to the 10 year club! It has been a great ride for me too. I guess this place, being a social media / blogging site at heart, is a good fit for people already writing online.

You're right, it takes some time to be noticed, in many cases. But once you gain friends here, they tend to stick with you over the years.

Long Live HIVE!

Safe travels and happy birthday to your mom!

I appreciate that Kenny! I felt as though the twenty+ year backlog of writing I had before joining Hive was meant to post here. It was all unpublished for the most part. Hive has also helped me write my last four books. The Perfect Pause, Mindful Moments, Ephemera, and Poems from the Edge of the Apocalypse have all been born from series of Hive posts.

There is a lot of loyalty here. It sometimes makes me sad to think about the people who've left. There were so many years of meaningful exchanges and face-to-face meetups and then poof they're gone.

Cheers to Hive! Thanks so much my friend.

Congratulations on ten years here!

Thank you!

Congrats to your 10 years, truly an OG!

It's so motivating to read stories like this where Hive can change a person's life, and that they don't take things for granted. I hope people will read this and give more respect to Hive that it deserves.

Btw, what have you inserted here?

1000061051.png

Thank you! I scrolled through some of my old posts yesterday and the volume was mind-blogging. I hope people read this and are motivated to both develop their brand/niche and recognize the potential of the platform. Most people skip that first part. I think that insert you saw is probably the .gif I used in the beginning of the post. It's from Giphy.com and that site must be blocked in your region.

That's odd, I can see the gif at the beginning of the post. Anyway, no worries.

Hello, dear friend @ericvancewalton, good day.

It hasn't been easy, no doubt, but perseverance always pays off. Now celebrating the results of this beautiful journey. Happy first decade. Here's to many more.

I'm grateful to be a part of these first 10 years.

A big hug to your whole family.

Have a great day.

Thank you Luis! I'm so happy to have met you. I wish you and your family well!

hey my friend your journey from the early days of gatekept publishing to finding your true home on hive is such a powerful and moving narrative it is rare to see someone so honestly map out the highs and lows of their professional life and your gratitude towards the community is truly touching your story isn't just about financial success it is about reclaiming the power to tell your own stories on your own terms which is the ultimate goal for any writer given how pivotal

what is the single most important lesson you have learned about staying motivated as a creator when the market or the platform feels particularly quiet or challenging

Hello! The biggest lesson I've learned about staying motivated is you have to love what you do and then do it, mainly, for your own enjoyment. That love and enjoyment you feel will coax you to keep showing up despite the highs and lows.

2017-2020 were the best years ever.
Many people retired thanks to their earnings on “S”

Oh, those first couple of Fests were so epic! My phenomenal earnings lasted less than a year but, thankfully, I was able to parlay that into other things and grow it. Do you remember some of the characters we had on here?! It was like the Wild West. Lol.

Yes…

I made a small Fortune thanks to @Randowhale and others

People like @kencode were making $7,000 per post in 2016 -2017

The Golden era of Crypto blogging

He is still around building a Video platform with Fediverse and Blurt.media / Blurt.blog

Luckily I Converted most of my Steem and Hive into Bitcoin in 2020 . Steemit was the best thing Ever.

This post is perfect timing to lift my spirits and keep me going, which I really need 😀.

I hope you're doing well, that you enjoy your mother's birthday, and that you return safely.

I will get there next year...

Wow ,congratulations on reaching that milestone👏
I am already 3 years in hive and I can say that hive really helps me during my crisis.

It is true that this platform is special and is also giving people a lot of income, but at this time, if I look at my content, my content before was about going out and going to hotels and other places, so much was spent there that at this time this platform is not giving so much money, but still I love this platform, so I am still working on this platform and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. I myself have been familiar with this platform for seven years and have been working continuously for four years.

Such a fantastic milestone, @ericvancewalton.

Congrats!
