i always had this habit of buying laptops/backup drives with incredibly over the top memory (put it this way had a 1TB backup drive in 2010 when that was, i'm pretty sure, Not Common for a non-techie at the time lol; this is not a new habit). mostly it was to use said machine for 10+ years without having to upgrade anything (i'm lazy) - nowadays it's to archive things since i'm not a cloud user / prefer working offline because the internet here sucks.

and uh

i feel for everyone right now with the RAM shortage but wow did that weird habit kinda come in clutch.... not to mention buying the deck right before all of this happened ;orz you could not get me to pay for a new game now....

2-hour video breakdown of that “what if the CW did gritty adult Powerpuff Girls” pilot that everyone was making fun of a while back. Apparently the script leaked! This guy talks through it all, and adds so many good takes.

It’s mostly as terrible as you expect, but there were some genuine “this could’ve been good, if it was in a better show” moments. There’s a point where the Youtuber says “admit it, if you watched that scene on TV, it would’ve gotten you,” right after reading a description that did in fact have me thinking “okay, if that was on TV, it would’ve gotten me.”

Extremely long unrolled Xitter thread with a “how to fix the Harry Potter books” proposal. Starts with a reveal that could’ve happened in the Chamber of Secrets, builds on it with a major turning point in Goblet of Fire, then tracks the way those changes could spiral through all the rest of the series.

This guy does have a few iffy takes. (There was at least one really stark example of “when the characters do X, it’s wishy-washy liberalism that JKR should feel bad for writing; when the characters don’t do X, it’s utopian socialism that JKR should’ve written.”)

But the meat of the premise is good, and the sheer scale of the HP problems he fixes along the way — worldbuilding problems, plot-hole problems, setups-that-never-went-anywhere problems — is kind of amazing. I teared up IRL when I got to the ending.

Patreon introduced a new Twitter-esque microblogging feed. How’s that working out so far?

Welp, they’re actively promoting “you don’t even have to write anything new for this! You can repost stuff you’ve already posted on other sites!” So, I can only assume it’s super popular and going just as well as they hoped.

I have low-key wanted to print an Oz treasury for years now. The upcoming Printopia 2026 event on BackerKit has finally kicked me into gear.

(This is replacing the usual yearly Leif & Thorn campaign. The strips for Volume 9 will not, for the first time, all be fully-drawn before the campaign would start. And I don’t want to mess up my perfect stable “books start shipping by the next March” track record with “books start shipping by, idk, whenever I’m finished.”)

Here’s the pre-launch page for Dorothy And Her Princess In Oz. Like with all my print comic collections, it’s a mix of “stuff that’s been freely shared online” (the stories) and “special book-exclusive bonus stuff” (new art) (seriously, this thing will have a ton of new art).

If that sounds like something you’d buy, click through and sign up. If it doesn’t, but you’re willing to give me an ego boost from the follower count going up, sign up anyway.

Summerween Read-a-Thon

This is going up later than intended. I found out about this via Book Riot's blog post/article about various summer reading challenges happening this year.

BookTuber gabbyreads hosts this particular read-a-thon every summer. I'm not sure for how many years. She has information up on YouTube and Instagram.

The five reading prompts this year are:

1. Read a book in the dark or at night

2. Read a thriller or horror book

3. Read an author you've never read before

4. Read a book with pink on the cover

5. And read a book with fewer than 250 pages

If you are posting your Summerween challenge on Instagram, the Instagram posting specific prompts are:

1. Post your TBR

2. Post books with pink spines

3. Post a reel of your reading routine

4. Post a pic of your current read

5. Post a pic of any books with summer vibes

6. Post a pic of a book in nature

7. And post a pic of your final read (or a stack of all the books you read)

Challenge runs July 3rd - 9th

Do with this information what you will and have fun.

The next round of Syn Hunters has started…and I did not sign back up this time. I have a bunch of other obligations in the next few months (including my next BackerKit campaign, which just got accepted into Printopia 2026!) — I wouldn’t have enough energy to dedicate to syn-hunting, not without slacking off on other important tasks.

So here’s a post about a different tag-wrangling thing.

I did a thorough trawl of my fandoms list, and this time I kept track of “which bins can I actively not clear out right now, and why?”

Turns out I have 19 of those! (As of the time I finished counting. The number may have flexed by the time you’re reading this.)

Here’s the list of my fandoms with lingering tags from an un-canonized crossover:

  1. Christmas Tales & Traditions – Crossover tags from Weihnachtsmann & Co KG
  2. Fried (Webcomic) – Tags from Static – Fandom…not even sure what the intended canon is for that, so it’s no wonder the fandom-canonizing wranglers haven’t sorted it
  3. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) – Crossover tags from Neurotically Yours – Fandom
  4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas! – Dr. Seuss – Same
  5. Haunted Housemate – Bloopsalot (Webcomic) – Crossover tags from several places, there’s a big multifandom series
  6. Inside The Lines (Webcomic) – Same multifandom series
  7. Kraken Watch (Webcomic) – Same multifandom series again
  8. 사랑은 환상! | Love is an Illusion (Webcomic) – Crossover tags from 다이아몬드 더스트 | Diamond Dust (Webcomic)
  9. Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story – Crossover tags from 12HC – CLC Link (Chuyên Lào Cai)
  10. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika | Puella Magi Madoka Magica – Same…also from Shoujo city 2d…and Mahou Shoujo Kokone wa Kakukatariki…and a few more things on top of that, Madoka fans love to make everyone become meguca
  11. Strangers With Candy – Crossover tags from Gym Teacher: The Movie

There are a couple different techniques wranglers can use to handle these. For instance: in some cases, the non-canonized works will have related fandoms that can “babysit” their tags. Christmas Tales & Traditions is actually one of those — it’ll take “characters from miscellaneous Christmas-themed fandoms that haven’t been canonized.”

That’s not an approach I personally go for. As new fandoms get canonized, I’m always paranoid that I won’t remember which ones have tags that need retrieving from somewhere else, and then they’ll be lost forever. I’d much rather have them “stuck on the to-do list” until I can put them in The Right Place.

Here’s the other list: my fandoms with tags from at least one crossover fandom that is canonical, but the tags are new:

  1. Frosty The Snowman (1969)
  2. Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon | Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon
  3. Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon | Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (Anime & Manga)
  4. Dracula – Bram Stoker (Novel 1897)
  5. Hellsing (Anime & Manga)
  6. Rankin-Bass Holiday Specials
  7. Religion & Lore – Ambiguous Fandom
  8. The Wizard of Oz & Related Fandoms

Wranglers aren’t required to check on their fandoms every single day. I have a once-a-week reminder scheduled for it, and I think that’s pretty common. When a crossover fandom has its own wrangler(s), you’re supposed to give them at least 2 weeks to pick up their tags.

During the COVID lockdowns, we got an official policy notice of “listen, everyone is stressed as hell right now, let’s all give each other 4 weeks.” I’m…not actually sure if that ever got switched back? I still usually wait 4 weeks, anyway.

Along with those 19, there’s 1 last fandom where I could clean the bins, I just haven’t gotten to it:

Emmy The Robot (Webcomic) is a series about a cute android maid, with a fandom that loves to create Original Cute Android Maid Characters. So there are a bunch of “might be OCs, might be minor canon characters, gotta do the research to find out” tags in those bins. This was not a week where I felt like doing the research.

There’s a good chance this will hit the point of “too much ongoing hassle to keep up with, I’m just dropping the fandom” pretty soon. Maybe when I get to the end of the alphabet in the current “getting my numbers down by yeeting 1-work fandoms” streak.

Notes:
My room deep clean/reno is still ongoing. It's had a few setbacks, but I think I can still get things done on time.

The library's summer reading challenge started. It's only 10 books this year and we have to come up with our own "enrichment activities" for each book and describe and rate them on the reading log.

I've been doing my best not to take on new things that weren't already planned for, but my plate is still too full. I'll figure it out, but I'm just overwhelmed right now.

Readers familiar with the manga will quickly recognize that the store's name comes from "Hunter x Hunter." In an interview with "Xu Ci," an arts and literature website under the Hong Kong Museum of Literature , Huang Wenxuan said that "Hunter" made her feel proactive and interesting. "From then until now, everyone's atmosphere has been very depressed, and I feel like I'm a lamb to the slaughter. I don't like that kind of dejected feeling. I think people can always make choices and can give meaning to their choices."

"There is a word for this kind of communication, one the philosopher Harry Frankfurt famously employed back in 1986, when he wrote a short essay called On Bullshit. Frankfurt’s central observation, which has aged terrifyingly well, is that the bullshitter is not the same as the liar, because the liar at least respects the truth enough to try to hide it, but the bullshitter does not care whether what they are saying is true or false. The truth-value of the statement is simply not part of their concern. The bullshitter is optimising for a different objective, usually appearing competent, appearing confident, or appearing to be the right kind of person to be in the room. And precisely because the bullshitter is indifferent to truth, Frankfurt argued, they are a greater threat to honest discourse than any liar. Twenty years on, that essay reads like a pre-mortem on the modern internet and, in parts, modern society."

Summerween Cometh

And people are losing their minds a little.

For some reason this year, my social media feeds are filled with headlines like, "Summerween taken over by overconsumption problem and losing spirit of the holiday." As someone who is dismayed by the fact that there is a very fast cycle of monetizing to the teeth everything that becomes vaguely popular and by the fact that most "Halloween All Year" online spaces are dominated by shopping hauls, code oranges, and sponsorship videos, I do feel the overconsumption problem should be discussed. It's the "spirit of the holiday" statement I keep seeing that's bothering me. Summerween is a made up holiday for fun, like Christmas in July. Some people need to take several breaths and touch some grass.

Also, if buying a skeleton flamingo pool floatie or a wolfman in a Hawaiian shirt tchotchke makes you happy, I'm not going to stop you (or judge).

So what is Summerween exactly?

It's two things. It's a fandom holiday from the Gravity Falls fandom, like Supernatural Day or October 3rd (Fullmetal Alchemist). I have yet to watch Gravity Falls, (I know, it's on my short list), so I can't offer further guidance there. It is also a fun excuse to do Halloween things in summer, like Christmas in July is for Christmas.

When exactly is it celebrated? (Answer is northern hemisphere oriented)

This kind of varies from person to person. For some, it's July 5th only. (I suspect due to Gravity Falls.) Some see July 5th as just the kick off day with it continuing either until the beginning of fall or Halloween itself. Other people start at the beginning of June or the summer solstice. I'm not sure there is a wrong way of doing this. If you want to celebrate Summerween in December in the northern hemisphere, I won't stop you.

All that being said, I've made a list of Summerween activities that don't necessarily revolve around shopping, if you don't want it to, for those you want inspiration:

Carve a jack-o-lantern out of a watermelon (or any melon. I've seen people use pineapples)

Have a party, BBQ, or picnic with a Summerween theme and/or Halloween themed food. Examples: spiderweb nachos, jack-o-lantern cheeseburgers, etc.

Make spooky versions of summer cocktails & mocktails

Read scary/horror/Halloween spirited books. If you are needing inspiration or mire structure, I know of at least one online Summerween reading challenge (which I am hoping to make a separate post about). Many people put out Summer themed horror reading lists. (Ash.reads.horror does sub category lists like carnivals, summer camp, beaches, etc.) There also used to be a Summerween book club online that I can't currently find the link to, but I'm sure there are others.

Join in the fun with Dracula Daily. It started May 3rd, but you can join anytime and there are archives to read the sections you missed in at least two official places. [community profile] vampiremedia is also doing a weekly recap & discussion.

Sit around a campfire and tell scary stories. Though, if you are in the US, given the heightened fire risk this year nearly everywhere, maybe a fake or battery powered campfire alternative.

Have a costume fashion show or even just get a jump on making your Halloween costume. Have a complicated makeup look you never have time to practice? Summerween makes a convenient excuse.

Have an old school sleepover. The whole bit with games and mischief and snacks. (Yes, you are allowed to have silly fun as an adult.)

Have a craft party. Interpretation of craft up to you.

If you are both a Halloween Ghoul and a Christmas in July Ghoul, try Creepmas in July. Plug: [personal profile] vexed_wench and I are co-hosting our annual Winterfest in July at [community profile] allbingo again this year and we've added a creepmas in July prompt list.

Have movie nights alone or with friends, possibly with themed snacks. For extra fun, you could slowly amp up the scary content, starting with TV specials and cute Halloween movies in July, building up to gory slashers in October.

Make or find playlists. I know for a fact there are Halloween surfer rock playlists on Spotify.

For my fandom creation peeps, find some summer prompts and Halloween them up or vice-versa for your fics, art, edits, etc. There used to be a summer horror exchange on DW, but it's long dead. There maybe other challenges out there I don't know about though.

Make prompt lists or find them. In years past, there has been Summerween drawing challenges on Instagram, one was you were given Summerween prompts and you drew ghosts doing the activities and there was another which was the same thing, but with pumpkins. I am sure there are others.

100 days until Halloween starts in July (the 22nd, I think) and there are lots of challenges out there like Halloween Happy's annual prompt list and Alt Knots' big countdown crochet project.

Have Halloween decorations you always want to make, but don't have time? Want to be the house that gives fun candy alternatives like crocheted spiders? Want to start building a Halloween village, but never seem to be able to pull it together in October? Summerween is your new excuse to start all these things.

Make memes or journal/blog games & activities. Make "make an OC" games. Basically anything that was thought up for 3 Weeks for Dreamwidth, but Summerween flavored.

Look for local tourist things around you; ghost tours, short road trips to haunted places, oddity fairs, carnivals (which are inherently spooky), bat watching hikes, etc.

Make up a local crypid

Summerween nail art

There is definitely more, but my brain says that is enough brainstorming today.

I hope that gave everyone some fun ideas. Summerween safely everyone!

This is a video that I really enjoyed, about something I've thought about for a while, where fandomites will slap a little yuri in the middle of their m/m sperging to shut up the haterz, then go back to their usual slop. They worded it really well here, and rlly pinpointed why I hate these sort of ingenuous shipping. I think a lot of people get things wrong when they try and get tiktok durr hurrr toxic yaoiii people to ship f/f, you know it will just end up as shallow pity yuri slop, right? ...right?

I think something like this will happen to the upcoming "jimoto saikou" anime, tons of people will come into it being all zomg tawksic yuri!!1 and shit up everything on tiktok and ruin my girls. Everyone should go read jimoto saikou btw.

Anyweys i hate tiktok and wikinnies so much I hope they all grow up and become less annoying and WRONG ABOUT ANIME CHARACTERSf

Miniminuteman (Milo Rossi) on Youtube does fun long-form videos about “why this pseudo-archaeology conspiracy theory is wrong, and how the actual archaeology of the site they’re talking about is cooler anyway.”

Specific rec: his video about the Bad Dürrenberg skeleton, which was originally spun as “a mighty white male Aryan warrior,” but turns out to be a woman, dark-skinned, and unusually-inactive, possibly because she was so rich and important that people brought stuff to her. (Wikipedia article on her, if you’d rather read than watch/listen.) She lived around 9,000 years ago, and was buried with so much stuff. Milo explains it as “she might have been the richest human alive in 7,000 BCE” levels of stuff.

There’s a lot of suspicion that she was some kind of religious figure. She had a skeletal malformation that meant she could probably cut off a blood vessel to her brain by holding her head just right, which is a perfect recipe for “the ability to open a connection to the spirit world, i.e. induce hallucinations, on-demand.”

(There was also an infant buried with her. Not her biological child, but a close-ish relative. Nobody seems to have any solid theories about that part.)

Fanart of the two people buried in the Bad Drrenberg grave

What gets me is:

Along with some of the possibly-religious ornamentation buried with her, there were similar decorations buried a few feet away…that tested as being from 600 years later. As in, maybe the religion she represented (led?) (started??) was still going strong for the next 6 centuries.

And then another 8+ millennia went by, and present-day humans dug her up, with absolutely no idea what this religion was. Digging up this skeleton is the only reason we know it existed at all.

If these were already a feature of human culture in 7,000 BCE — before the invention of writing! — how many others do you think we’ve had and lost?

Somewhere in Plato’s realm of forms, there’s a graveyard for all the gods humanity has invented, sustained for centuries, and then abandoned so completely that there’s not a speck of knowledge about them left in the physical world.

And it’s a big graveyard.

the pain scale, krad edition

on the mend(?) from a weirdly bad inflammation/arthritis flare. i used to have these all the time as a kid; thankfully they're not as common now, but they sure do re-introduce you rather bluntly to the entire pain scale (much like the piano scale lol).

which inspired this post because sometimes i do wonder if my sense of pain is just completely... wack heh. posting here for just recording, morbid curiosity, and information sharing.

0 - unreasonably good day. it happens, but rare.

1 - technically A low level pain is there, but you don't even recognize it unless if you're meditating/resting or if somebody points it out (eg like a low level headache, or if a hip/your back is twinging from a weather change). very easy to push through and ignore; general baseline for me now most days. but there is a non zero effort in ignoring.

2 - low level headaches sit here pretty frequently; also me most winters if i'm being an idiot and not deliberately keeping warm or by a space heater. can still push through and keep living the general life but it's still a recognizable presence that i'm aware of off to the side. probably would call off outside errands to avoid aggravating things, but doing things normally in the house. general back pain. when a motrin kicks in, its effects usually have me here (eg it subtracts -2 levels).

3 - i am considering/most likely taking one motrin to take the edge off. where pain alone starts dictating if i get up for a food/bathroom run, when i get up, how i move to avoid aggravating the place. if it's a slow work day i'm resting once every 2 hrs.

4 - i go for the motrin/(+other ways to kick down the pain a few levels). not really concerned yet, but annoying enough i want to stop it. the basic headache and the 'grit your teeth through the ache' tier. most people still probably could not see it in my face. < basically here rn

5 - the threshold i start genuinely paying attention and mentally writing the medical log. things can potentially go sidways unless if you sit down, shut up, and get some rest. also a "good" fall. you're gonna hurt and ache for a few weeks (eg some scrapes/bleeding/broken skin) but all the same it can be so much worse.

6 - pain would probably be classified as debilitating here. i am taking two motrin and laying down in a dark quiet room, no exceptions. the average migranes are around here.

7 - you start getting nauseous from pain alone here. a really bad searing twinge can spike here. permanent damage starts here when you get some kind of scar tissue.

8 - you are consistently nauseous from pain here. a "bad" fall. i'm going to take a guess this is most people's experience with a 10.

9 - this starts to be in the territory of almost hospital-only pain. when i had a bad fall on concrete and fractured my hip would be here.

10 - hospital/surgery/post-op exclusive. i've written about those before in this tag (eg stuff that would be not out of place in a saw movie lol) but needless to say, da Bad zone. there is no existing beyond  Pain.

oh holy shit y'all this is so cool

so i was rereading through dreamwidth and remembered i had a quote mentioning ralph ginzburg. published back in the 1950-ish, got arrested because he published an erotic magazine with art via obscenity laws.

all the issues are posted on this site in the coolest layout possible: http://eros.110west40th.com/

Eros is a seminal, but somewhat overlooked by a wider public, magazine, which broke taboos, rattled some nerves and made a few enemies.

looking for more context, i found this passage below: (part of a larger article here) https://brooklynrail.org/2006/10/express/a-tribute-to-eros/

When Ralph Ginzburg died this past July at age 76, he was variously remembered as a controversial publisher, foe of both Bobby Kennedy and Barry Goldwater, successful photographer, leading opponent of circumcision, and a master of disguise, his most favorite being that of a minister. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Ginzburg attended City College, where he edited The Ticker, a campus newspaper. After graduating in 1949, he went to work in publishing, and eventually found his first calling in literary smut. His 1958 book An Unhurried View of Erotica, a collection of risque material plucked from many of the world’s leading libraries, sold more than 125,000 copies in hardback and over 200,000 in print. Such sizable readership prompted Ginzburg four years later to launch Eros, a hardbound quarterly that would last for only a year.

The four issues of Eros nevertheless would be memorable for many reasons, not least because they served as the basis of Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy’s prosecution of Ginzburg in 1963 on obscenity charges. Three years later, the Supreme Court ruled 5–4 against the publisher, causing him to be sentenced to five years in prison (he served eight months). Even so, the Village Voice’s Nat Hentoff, an original Eros contributor and a First Amendment historian, maintains that Ginzburg’s efforts helped move the Court towards an implicit recognition of sexual content as free speech.

i love his letter in this one... http://eros.110west40th.com/content/1-volumes/4-winter/eros4-027.jpg

(learning now he basically kicked off the 1960's sexual revolution)

there's a mental image / picture i sometimes want to draw of me (in rarely, a very realistic/realism tone) on a laptop surrounded by the recognizable ghosts of just a tiny sliver of the thinkers/creatives/voices i've read, even just recently.

james baldwin, contrapoints, george washington, anonymous (the infinite, beautiful messy collective of those who choose to go unidentified or by handles only), homer, tom of finland, marjane satrapi.....

i was/(am)? incredibly sheltered, for ... complicated reasons. not gonna go into it. but climbing over that metaphorical fence and running feral across the whole wide internet with desperation and starvation for Other Thoughts since i was fifteen very much in places that would have not been approved on the sheer grounds of 'ideologically incorrect' was is, probably the one realistic reason and place i grew to be as much of a mature being as i am now.

(and yes, the digital world is not a paneca for everything; think we've seen the dark underbelly of it by now; even somebody corrupted as much as i am by the 'data wants to be free' old hacker ethos has to admit that the internet now is not what we ran wild on in 2005, let alone the tree of nuances underneath.)

but....

thinking about kids homeschooled and otherwise confined for many different reasons in terms of physical data scarcity having the salvation of this hidden world.

thinking about the raw information scarcity of even the 1990's. you were very literally trapped if you were not able to physically exist in precious few knowledge oasis. even books had to be smuggled and were confiscated. but a computer? at one point was such an seemingly unassuming harmless toy that nobody thought twice about what could be looked up by an seemingly unassuming harmless person.

to be the one generation, arguably, where that window was thrown wide....

idunno.

thinking about it a lot lately.

Even after he'd live with us for a couple of years, he didn't understand why we'd taken him in. "Why do you want me?" he shouted through his tears during one of our rare but agonizing fights. 'We love you" was never answer enough. In a life in which survival is based on barter, love can be a pitifully small coin.

Reread thread for the middle of Pet Shop of Horrors volume 5 (Seven Seas edition), which is the back half of Volume 7 (TokyoPop edition).

This question comes up in the post, but I’ll front-load it here too: Somebody with the original Japanese manga on hand, can you poke through the “Duty” chapter and find out what the “Scorpio’s Children” group was originally called?

Originally liveblogged on Mastodon / Bluesky. Collating it all together here. Affiliate links for the whole Collector’s Edition, in case you want your own!

Also: the first chapter of a fluffy Little Sister D fic is up. With illustrations:
