this is a just-in-case - it seems my account may have been among those recently broken into and used for spamming, as DW has just reported,
so a)
please ignore any rubbish originating from what looks like this account (which could of course encompass all posts, depending on your point of view and criteria :-) But srsly, if it's spammy it ain't me, promise)
and b)
hope everyone is well, wherever you are ...

Well I thought I knew ... that when people in the USA say "yard work" they mean what we Brits call "gardening"

But what is the difference in the USA between yard work and gardening?

I have to translate, would you believe a sentence from USAnian to Brit-speak, that refers to doing "yard work or gardening" and one that refers to "digging in the garden or yard"

Implying that these are two different things, or at least things that are not quite the same.

Help, USA-based friends - can anyone explain this to me?

(and in relation to this - what is the difference between your yard and your garden anyway? If you have one of each of these things, what are they? Damn, I was so sure it was simply that USA-yard = UK-garden!)

Many thanks for any pointers!

so I'll keep it brief.

If you happen to like Bernstein ...
there happens to be a BBC Radio 3 broadcast (it was scheduled for Sunday 4th February late evening, but it's on iPlayer now, which certainly makes for more convenient listening hours)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09qqcb0

It's an hour in total, consisting of three works:
Bernstein's last published work (??? I think. iirc), Arias and Barcarolles (I'd never heard this before - it was fun!)
a very early work, Clarinet Sonata (beautiful, and Copeland-y)
[Touches: Chorale, eight variations and coda for piano (this was included in the live performance today, but it's going to be broadcast separately on a different day so it won't be in this programme)]
and (this is where I break out in a cold sweat, you can tell)

Prelude, Fugue and Riffs (about the last 10-15 minutes of the programme)

and the soloist on Prelude, Fugue and Riffs is ... Spawn#2

(it's an ensemble piece, not like the others which are a four-hander and a duet respectively, so it's not a solo piece it just has a solo in it)

Happy Birthday!!!!! to [livejournal.com profile] londonronnie ! I'm still not used to the DW way, I don't think, so not sure if this will post as intended - lets see :-)

Wishing you all the very best for your birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I hope the day and everything and everyone in it behaves as they jolly well should *g* (and brings you presents and cake)

I've never missed voting, but in the past that's all I've done.

This time is ... an even bigger deal than usual, and I've been wearing out my shoes (and apparently my knees: there's a lot of hard pavement and concrete stairs about the town, which my knees appear to be slightly peeved about) as a reminderer and get-out-the-vote-door-knockerer, first locally, then today in my nearest marginal and finally back locally again.

Word was that turnout was good, but there's also news of large numbers of young people - recently registered - being turned away in some key marginals because the polling stations had been issued with old, out-of-date registers ...

(the "mood" options do not include "knackered". I protest)
