Harry/Draco Discussion

Hey guys, I'm starting to think this fic never existed. Maybe I have some major element wrong...
Tell me if you've heard of this or anything like it (just to get it cleared out, it's not Gentry Green or Gaining Momentum):


It's an H/D I'm pretty sure,and there's something about a master's program
or apprentice program at the school. It's offered to everyone, but
some aspect of it discourages most from actually doing it (I remember
Dumbles explaining this to the group). Ginny and Neville are in the
program too, I think, plus others. They have rooms of their own/their
own common room, which they can access through a portrait in Dumble's
office. I remember bathrooms in marble mentioned. It's
multi-chaptered, although it wasn't far along when I lost track of it.
I think it was on fanfiction.net, but it could also be on skyehawke,
foreverfandom.net, or harrypotterfanfiction.com . It might even be on
adultfanfiction, but I don't think so. In the one I'm looking for, the
apprentices have their /own common room/ which uses all the house
colours, I think (in a not OMG COLOURS BURN MY EYES type of way. they have
their own rooms and baths (maybe two bedrooms per bath? not sure)
attached to the common room. They can access their common room through
a portrait in dumble's office. This may be abandoned or removed from the net, since I read it so long ago, so if anyone recognizes it and has a copy saved a way somewhere send it my way, pretty please!

I realize this is not a rec or a story or anything that may pertain to this community...

But this is important. Tomorrow there might not BE anymore Harry Potter related communities left. And I don't know about you, but this upsets me greatly.

As members of the Harry Potter Fandom, we need to stand up and be counted. Fandom is ours. Generally, I think that Fandom People are the nicest people I have ever met. Some of us write porn, some of us write angst, some of us write genfic, some of us don't write but we read, and to some of us, Fandom (an unrestricted Fandom) has come to mean more than anything in the world.

Please do your part to keep Fandom alive. Join the group fandom_counts, copy and paste this message to your journals, tell all your fandom friends, pimp it EVERYWHERE. Let's stick together, show all the closed-minded people of this world that we are not sick or perverted, we are just passionate and extremely non-judgemental.

so we are now all on the committee that sets the reading list for classes at hp fanfiction university. let's pretend that there are three 100 level classes about h/d and two 200 level classes. we have to decide what fics must be read in the courses. the courses are as follows:

hd101- introduction to harry/draco fanfiction
this course involves the reading and discussion of the following
1. two multichaptered staples of over 90,000 words. one must be during hogwarts and one must be post-hogwarts.
2. 10 one-shots of less than 12,000 words: 2 fluff, 2 angst, 2 flangst, 1 humor, 1 pwp, 1 pre-slash and 1 crack.

hd102- multichaptered h/d fics
this course involves the reading and discussion of 3 long fics. all must exceed 105,000 words.

hd103- advanced harry/draco fanfiction
this course involves the reading and discussion of the following
1. one fandom classic of over 175,000 words.
2. two multichaptered war-fics, must be over 50,000 words.

hd201- short novels, series, and drabbles
this course involves the reading and discussion of the following
1. three series of no less than 3 stories set in the same universe. at least one of the series must have 5 stories or more.
2. two short novels between the length of 12,000 and 75,000 words.
3. ten drabbles/very short stories of less than 650 words.

hd202- fringe reading in harry/draco fanfiction
this course involves the reading and discussion of the following
1. one mpreg fic, must be over 35,000 words.
2. one veela fic, must be over 35,000 words.
3. one au fic, must be over 35,000 words.
4. choose two dark fics- the story may include warnings of possibly disturbing topics such as rape, torture, bdsm, incest, extreme violence, main character death, etc... choose from the following- there will be a list of 5-7 choices.



so what we need to do is look at the above reading requirements and decide which fics the students should be reading. it is my request that each and every one of you look at the class requirements above and tell me which stories you think should be on the reading list. if you don't know or haven't read stories in one of the categories, feel free to skip it and just say that you don't know or haven't read enough to know. when choosing fics, try to include stories from many different authors and many different styles of writing. also try to include some relatively new stories as well as some of the very earliest h/d stories that helped shape the h/d shipping landscape from the very beginning. if after looking through the class requirements you feel that i am missing some important category of h/d stories, please be sure to let me know and i will try to include it in the final class reading lists.
after i feel i have gotten sufficient enough responses, i will go through your ideas and using my excellent judgement, consider all of your suggestions and come up with the finalized reading list and post it. i thank you all very much for you valuable input and look forward to seeing your recommendations.

I always thought that Draco Malfoy showed qualities that belong both to Slytherin and Gryffindor Houses.

 

On one hand, Draco is ambitious and cunning -- he devised some good plans to get Harry in trouble; he thought he was ready to kill Dumbledore in HBP to save his parents and himself (Slytherins use ‘any means to achieve their ends’); he managed to get Death Eaters into highly guarded castle (though, I wonder what would have happened, if Dumbledore hadn’t been poisoned, because, I believe, even in bad shape he could have taken down four Death Eaters).

 

On the other hand, Draco is brave and passionate -- he stalked Harry throughout their first five years trying to get Harry’s attention (or get into his pants :D), which was childish and counterproductive, because Harry Potter was Dumbledore’s golden boy and Dumbledore was in a position of power; Draco always had bad reputation outside Slytherin House, which was again not too beneficial; also he wasn’t cold enough to kill Dumbledore in the end (he didn’t use ‘any means’).

 

I would describe Draco as a Slytherin with Gryffindor heart -- he uses Slytherin methods to achieve Griffindor goals.

I wanted to discuss Harry/Draco moments we expect from the next book.

 

I have the following theory:

 

Voldie is happy about Dumbledore’s death. He practically loves Draco/Snape little team, so he assigns them ‘great honour’ -- they’ve got to bring him Harry.

 

Draco/Snape meet Harry/Ron/Hermione somewhere in the middle of the book; and something horribly cliché happens with Ron being stupid, Hermione being reasonable (I am sure she has everything figured out), Snape being insufferable, Draco being snotty and Harry being absolutely adorable. As a result they team up.

 

Then, somewhere closer to the ending, Draco is dying on Harry (because Voldie isn’t stupid and he figured out that something was going on) and they have the last talk where some sappy stuff happens -- Harry forgives Draco, Draco forgives Harry, Draco asks Harry to look after his mother and then they have the most beautiful kiss in history but JKR doesn’t tell us about it (she says, “If I were to write everything, what fandom will be doing?”). And everyone is crying -- FSR is crying, all Ice Queens of H/D fandom are crying and even het-readers are crying.

 

So, that was my theory. What theory/theories you have? What do you think is likely to happen to H/D in the nest book?

 

I was very much interested in a few things that became clichés of Harry/Draco fandom.

 

Harry and Draco are usually portrayed in fan fiction as good-looking, clever and rich people. Their relationship is usually formed mostly under the influence of raging hormones.

 

These are my questions:

 

1. Why such things became fandom clichés in the first place?

 

2. Why people keep writing stories with mostly the same plot?

 

3. Are you tired of reading such stories?

 

4. Would you have liked to read stories about normal Harry and normal Draco who got to know each other, became friends, realised that they wanted to be together and only after that did all the NC-17 stuff imaginable?

Before HBP, Draco had often very clearly gone out of his way to make Harry's life difficult; in many ways, being Harry's rival/nemesis seemed so central to his character. And then HBP came along, where aside from the nose-stamping incident on the train, Draco is pretty much avoiding Harry completely, save for the rather memorable 'Boy Who Scored' moment (and even that encounter was initiated by Harry rather than Draco himself).

Which made me rethink my perspective on Draco's seeming obsession with Harry prior to HBP -- was it really Harry he was obsessed with? Or was it more about the side Harry was on -- since he was the 'shiniest' representative of the 'wrong side', Draco automagically went after him, but now that he had a 'real' assignment (in HBP), Harry became insignificant? Or perhaps Draco's insistence on making Harry's life difficult was never about Harry himself, but rather about how Harry reflected on Draco? And what does that mean for H/D? What do you think?
