Anime Review
So I have not been on this site in a very long time, but a part of me wants to start up again, and what better way than a review?
Title: Attack on Titan (season one)
Release: 2013
Genre: Action/Drama/Horror

I have just recently finished watching Attack on Titan, one of the most well praised animes of the year. I have a feeling I'd get a lot of negative response to this review (that is if anyone bothers to read it) but here goes.
First of all.. I want to make this review as SPOILER FREE as possible. If this means my review sounds a little vague, well that's is because I don't want to ruin it for people that would actually consider watching it. Good reviews shouldn't tell the plot anyway.
To start off, I am going to say that this anime is HIGHLY over rated. Not that it was not a good one to watch. It was just far too hyped for what I experienced. Keep in mind that this is just a review of the FIRST season. A follow up review is sure to come once the second season is created.
There are many problems I found with this series, and I am just hoping that they will be resolved with the second season installment.
First, some of characters are given some depth, but much of it seems superficial. Mostly, it was each character has this one trait that makes them who they are. Sasha eats... that's her feature. The main character Eren is a fighter... I get it. In fact, I can't even remember most of the characters names because they seemed so pointless.
There is a high amount of emotion expressed in the series, but that is largely due to the fact that they regularly kill off characters after just briefly letting the audience know them. I understand that death is a large factor of war, and the guilt it can bring to the survivors, but, as a viewer, you don't really care much about a character if you don't know much beyond the "we're a team and we'll get through this" element. Or the "I believe in you" feeling from side characters.
I don't care much about Sasha just because she is amusing in the fact that she loves to eat (so did practically every comedic 90s female anime character) You get a little more depth with a couple of the non main characters, such as Jean and Annie, but not much.
Another factor that I found irritating is that you don't really learn ANYTHING about the Titans in this first season. Throughout the entire thing I was hoping for at least a tidbit of insight, but alas, there was nothing. The first season seemed to end on a flat note, not having anything dealt with and just leaving more questions. (again, hoping this is dealt with in season 2).
The closest information I got will not be shared here because there is no way I can hint at it without providing a large spoiler.
One pro in this anime was not so much the main character, Eren, but that of his closest companions, Mikasa and Armin. We learn much of Mikasa's past and why she protects Eren as passionately as she does. We learn of Armin's upbringing and why he always looks out for new possibilities. Eren is just a fighter, no real reason given, other than a revenge purpose. However, he was a fighter even before that. No event made him one... he just is.
Another pro, which is probably why so many people highly praise this series, is the overall appearance. It is visually stunning to watch and full of emotion. There is a lot of movement and camera angels that are beautiful to watch. Even the Titan's themselves have some visual appeal because they are misshaped. One can even see the strength of the muscles they posses on the skinless Titans. They are an epitome of danger, killing without explained reason, yet they are not the only monsters. There is an appeal to the salvation of the last of humanity that attracts people. An idea that the one strong believer will inevitably win the day despite so many set backs. While this is not at all an original concept, it continues to captivate people.
It just has not reached it's full potential yet as a series. I am hopeful that it will.
