No Good Deed

GustavusTube

So I read in someone's journal that Berkley college has been posting full length lectures on youtube. This I had to check out, which I did at: http://youtube.com/ucberkeley

Sure enough, they have over 300 hours of real class lectures, all labeled by class title and lecture number. How sweet would that have been, or still be (for you current gusties), especially if you happen to miss a class for whatever completely legit reason there always is?

Needless to say, I was soon temped to youtube Gustavus. The result was a half an hour of shameless entertainment. There were no class lectures posted, but I did find something that brings back a really great memory from freshman year, or was it sophomore? Doesn't matter, it was the talk of campus the rest of the week! Good 'ol Matt Swenson.

Among other videos you can find time lapse videos of the corpse flower, building of the new stadium, a hilarious yet disturbingly scandalous class video in lieu of 1997's 10 year class reunion this October. I should also mention there is an awesome video of Ms. Donna Van Damme from the drag show last year. It always has to get really good the year after one graduates doesn't it?

Anyway, if you're bored, can't sleep (like me last night) or are just procrastinating from all the papers, readings and studying...check it out! :)

Fresh New Look

I'm not sure when it happened, or why, but one day the layout of this community went completely bizzaro. The transparencies were no longer transparent, the dialogue boxes started running into the banner, as did this strange new navigation bar LJ added to practically every page.

Well, over a year later I finally decided to fix the aforementioned atrocities. Gustavus LJ Community has a brand spankin' new look. Feel free to click on over and check it out. I know this community isn't exactly super hoppin' with activity, but I'd like to blame it on the layout neglect. ;-P

Anyway, if you guys hate it let me know. If you love it, let me know that too!

Isn't it coming out week coming up this week?

I miss GAC!

Advice

I am in the middle of putting together a proposal for a Chinese language and culture course for this coming J-term and I would love to get some input from current and former GAC students. What are some aspects of either language courses or J-term courses that you have liked or disliked? Are there things you would be particularily interested in learning about in a class on Chinese language and culture? Thanks!

Proposal

I don't know how many current Gusties read this but I thought I'd give this a shot anyway...

I work at GAC and I was thinking of proposing a small class/independent study, possibly for J-term, of Manderin Chinese. I would really like the chance to teach a full Chinese class, but I would like to start off small. So I was thinking maybe "An Introduction of Chinese in a Cultural Context" that way I could teach the basics of the language but mix some Chinese cultural studies into it to fill it out and make it more fun and less stressful (Chinese is a very hard language to learn, so I'd use the cultural stuff to help pace the class)

Does this sound like something that there may be interest in at Gustavus? I'd love to get some enthusiasm from students before I brought the idea to my boss. Thanks!

art at gustavus?

Does anyone know anything about the art departments at Gustavus?
I'm an art history major transferring to either Gustavus or Luther. At Gustavus I can do the double major in history and studio, which is cool, but it doesn't seem like they offer much in graphic design, and I'm thinking of doing art directing for a career if I don't go into museum/gallery stuff.
At Luther, on the other hand, studio and history are rolled into one general BA degree.
Any thoughts on transferring to Gustavus in general?
I love it there, so hopefully everything works out!

thanks!

Hmm, Group project?

Hello all.

I'm not a student at GAC, I knew a few people that went there a few years back. However I live in town. On church street. (yippie) anyway, I've been on this political/activism(very very liberal) kick as of late. I know this is a long shot, but I want to put "something" together, not sure what yet. And since I don't drive, i'd have to stick around mankato/st peter area. You can read the idea of what I want to do over at radical_wake_up, I want to do something non-profit. If anyone is into it, and wants to be a part of RWU, let me know (my contact info) is on the RWU info page.

If this isn't allowed let me know and I'll delete it.

Attn: Everyone!

Hey guys, just thought I'd throw the info out there that there will be a fundraising concert this Sunday night in Christ Chapel to help raise money for the Lutheran World Relief Fund. I don't know all the details, but several choirs from Mankato, and the St. Peter HS choir will be performing, as well as yours truly with the Gustavus Choir. There will also be our wonderful Chapel Choir and Gustavus Symphony Orchestra. Forgive me if I left a group out!

Each group is only doing only two pieces so the concert should be short and sweet with a wide variety of music to keep you constantly entertained! :)

Come show support with or without a donation!!

What: Showcase Concert for Lutheran World Relief
When: Sunday, December 11th
Time: 7:30 P.M.
Where: Christ Chapel

I Know You Want a Futon!!

Hey Gusties!

I hope you're all enjoying your summer!

This may seem like a shameless advertisement, but I'm going to do it anyway! Anybody need a futon for their dorm/apartment next year?

I'm a Gustie Alum (class of '03) and I still have my futon from college. It's in GREAT shape and very clean. I'm looking to sell it soon, but figured I'd check with all of you before listing it in the paper. The only reason I'm getting rid of it is because it's time to get some "grown up" furniture! :o)

It's a full size maroon matress with a black metal frame. I paid $300 for it in 2001. It's yours for $75. I'd be glad to e-mail you a picture of it if you'd like!

If anybody is interested, drop me an e-mail at juliemariemenard@yahoo.com.
