My name is Guddu Panwar, and I am a disabilities rights activist and entrepreneur based in New Delhi, India. I was born in a small village called Kolti in Uttarakhand, near Mussoorie. At 35 years old, I have faced significant challenges due to spina bifida and amputation, but I have never let these obstacles define me. Instead, I have used them as motivation to create opportunities for myself and others.

Growing up with spina bifida, mobility was a major challenge. Initially, I moved around on my knees, which led to severe infections, ultimately resulting in the amputation of my leg. My journey led me to an orphanage where I was introduced to mobility aids such as a wheelchair and a wooden board, but they were not comfortable or efficient. My life changed when a doctor gifted me a skateboard. This simple tool gave me independence, freedom, and a new perspective on life. Over time, I mastered using the skateboard to navigate various terrains, from city streets to mountain paths. I even became the first person in India to participate in a marathon using a skateboard, setting a new precedent for mobility solutions for people with disabilities.

While my journey began with disability advocacy, my vision has now expanded, leading me down a different path—entrepreneurship. I have started a business in my ancestral village, Kolti, to develop eco-tourism and create employment opportunities for the local community.

Establishing an Eco-Tourism Business in My Hometown

I have launched a camping site in Kolti, Uttarakhand, with small cottages and tent accommodations to attract tourists and showcase the natural beauty of the region. This initiative aims to promote sustainable tourism while empowering the villagers by providing them with employment opportunities. The eco-tourism project includes:

• Guided treks showcasing the scenic beauty of Uttarakhand’s mountains and forests.

• Cultural programs that highlight the traditional music, dance, and cuisine of the region.

• Local craft sales to support artisans and preserve traditional craftsmanship.

Through this business, I aim to improve the standard of living for the people in my village by fostering self-sufficiency and economic growth. This project is not just about tourism; it is about transforming lives, preserving our culture, and building a future where local communities thrive through sustainable business models.
