I seem to be jumping around a bit with this Challenge.  I do a couple days and then skip a couple.  Anyway, here's today's:

Day 6

In your own space, pimp three comms or challenges and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The first one no longer exists but I feel I should mention it because it's where I first started writing on a regular basis.  Prior to this challenge group, I was just bumbling along and making attempts here and there.  Once I got involved with this group, I started writing more often and I got more practical experience and began to feel more at ease about writing.  Another thing that happened was, I discovered a whole new group of friends on line and some wonderful authors.  The group that used to write for this challenge contained some pretty amazing authors.  I really miss this Challenge group!

The group was called 'Margold's Challenge' and every month, there was a new challenge or prompt to inspire folks to write. The group was run by by
marigoldg and it was a very active Challenge group.  During the last year or so of the group, llinos, became the co-mod for the Challenges.  The link below will take you to the challenge story listing and along you to look around if you like.  Even though the group is no longer up and running, the stories are still posted to the community.  The group was a Lord of the Rings group and all stories had to include a hobbit in them.  You could write about other races within Middle earth but you had to have one hobbit in there somewhere.

This was the first group that I joined on line and even though it hasn't been active in years, I still miss it.

Another group I enjoy does an annual event called "Back to Middle earth month" or
b2mem
They run an event for a full month with organized challenges that encourage people to write using Tolkien's characters and the lands of Middle earth. If I am not mistaken, I believe the group is run by
Silmarillion Writers' Guild and that they have been assisted by other coms and groups over the years. ( If someone else is the primary organizing group for this challenge, please correct me.  I have only participated in this event once and so I may not have all the information.) This event takes place during the month of March in honour of Frodo's destruction of the One Ring.   The link below will take you to last year's challenge site, which explains things more fully.  I hope they plan to hold the event again this year because they do such creative things with their challenges.

Another community with some lovely, creative Challenges for folks in the Tolkien fandom is
[community profile] waymeet

http://waymeet.dreamwidth.org/

They have not posted a new challenge in a while and so I don't know if they are still active at this point.  If not, the stories posted to their site are well worth a look.  They have held some very inventive challenges and have postings from a large group of writers.  The mods their were very encouraging and helpful.  It was a friendly, supportive, group.

Ok, this one is much more fun.  Here are the instructions:

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

This one is by a very dear friend who no longer has the time to write.  I miss her stories very much.  This was written by

PIppinfan1988  This is an older story but it just might be that new people to the fandom haven't read it.

It's called  "Setting the Captives Free" This is in the LOTR fandom
Summary:  Pippin, Merry, Frodo, and Sam lead a party of hobbits to free the prisoners in the Lockholes.

This lovely story is called, "A Secret Gate" and is written by Elanor

This is nothing short of brilliant.  The author writes as if this were a continuation of Tolkien's own works.  Be warned though, this is a work in progress and so I cannot say when it will be completed.  I do know that the author is still writing for it. I had an email from her only the other day and she mentioned her new chapter.  In any case, there is a great deal to enjoy here including original artwork drawn especially for the story.  This is currently 23 chapters long and each chapter is of considerable length, so have time to sit down and enjoy before you start this one.

www.storiesofarda.com/chapterlistview.asp

This is clever, funny, creative, and I enjoy it every time I read it.  The author is Llinos and the story is called "Frodo's Exciting Day Out"
Summary:  The Quest was a massive labour, of that there is no doubt. However, in this rather AU version, we see that it pays to have friends in high places. FINAL CHAPTER "With Eggsies and Flowers and Fish" is now posted.

I know.  Day one was supposed to be Day 1, Jan. 1, 2013, but I'm way behind here so hopefully, I can catch up a bit now.

Here is the challenge.

Day 1:
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Since I'm doing this, I'm going to rec three stories that are complete departures for me.  These are the rare ones in that they have a serious tone to them all the way through.

archiveofourown.org/works/349212/chapters/890334
This one is short, but not at all sweet.  It's called 'THE LAST TIME'.
It's in the LOTR fandom and was written during B2NEM

archiveofourown.org/works/146355/chapters/209210
This is another short one, and this one never managed to get a title.
It's LOTR fandom also and I have no idea why I wrote this one.

archiveofourown.org/works/506101
This is my one and only dwarf-centric fiction.  It's called, "Durin's Bane".
It was written for the B2MEM challenge.  it's a bit longer than the other two but
it's still on the short side of things.  Oh, and in case the title doesn't give it
away, this is LOTR fandom also.

Tolkien related benches!  Bet you didn't know I had any of those.  Ha!

This first photo was taken inside Sarehole Mill in the UK.  This is part of an
exhibit that they have there. You sit on these benches and watch a film about
The Lord of The Rings and J. R. R. Tolkien.  Sarehole Mill is said to be the
inspiration for the Mill in the Shire.  Tolkien played near here when he was
growing up.
The writing on the wall above the benches looks tiny in the photo
but it says:

"When the leaves are gold before they fall,
look for Bilbo in the woods of the Shire."

These two benches are located near the Brill Wind Mill.  The area
surrounding the Wind Mill is said to have been used by Tolkien as
an inspiration for the village of Bree as well as part of the Shire.

So Happy 'Baggins Birthday' to all who celebrate it.  Let us all
drink to the health of our two birthday hobbits!
And, if you should do
too much drinking, I hope there is a bench near by that you can pass
out on or sit on while you sober up.  Cheers!

This is sheep, a rabbit and it makes me way too happy!  So, here it is!

grey_wonderer: (Christmas Errol)
The Magnificent Knitted Merry has made his official holiday post on LiveJournal.  In case you haven't seen it, you need to follow this link:

http://knittedmerry.livejournal.com/18280.html

and let him know that you would like to receive a holiday greeting this year.  If you are on Knitted Merry's friend's list, you may have already seen his Yuletide post, but if you've missed it, go over and have a look at once.  Knitted Merry's holiday greetings are always in high demand and I am certain that this year's card will be no exception.  Naturally, Knitted Pippin is very involved in this most magnificent project too, and *no* one can resist a greeting from Knitted Pippin.

Errol is hoping that everyone will hurry over and get in on this holiday tradition. In fact, Errol is *slightly* involved in KM the Mag's seasonal greeting this year.  He is very proud of his part in Knitted Merry's holiday card and so he really hopes that everyone gets a chance to see it.  So please spread the news and point people toward Knitted Merry's post.

Let
knittedmerry or his personal representative, llinos know that you want to receive a card.  You don't want to be left out of the fun.

If you should have any trouble at all accessing Knitted Merry's post, let me know and I will be happy to get your information to him.

grey_wonderer: (Strawberry Fields)
October 9, 2010 would have been John Lennon's s70th birthday and the crowds turned out in Central Park at his "Strawberry Fields" memorial to pay tribute to him with flowers, apples, posters, notes, cards, and songs.  I was lucky enough to be among them.  It was an amazing time.  People were singing and some were playing guitars.  There was a keyboard, a trumpet, a ukulele, and a tambourine.  Everyone sang.  We sang Beatles' songs and John Lennon's songs, but for me, the highlight of it all was standing together with this vast group of Lennon fans and singing "Give Peace a Chance".

Everyone was gathered around the mosaic which has the word, "Imagine" at its center.  People came and went, working their way to the edge of the circle, staying a while, and then leaving to make room for someone else.  I met a man who comes every year all the way from Liverpool.  There was a woman with a terrific singing voice standing near me who had come there from Georgia and another lady who was there from Brazil.  There was a young man, probably in his early twenties who kept promising his girl friend that they would leave after one more song.  They were still there when I left.  People were requesting their favourite songs be sung and some would just start a song and everyone would join in.  The guitar players kind of directed the singing but they took requests.
There were people of all ages and all races and the entire time I was there, I didn't hear an angry word from anyone.  I find that very amazing in a group where everyone is shoved close together and all are trying to reach the center point.  Still, it was a fitting tribute to a man who held 'peace' dear to his heart.

I left a note with a birthday wish on it.  (Wishes from primwood too, who posted a daily song in tribute to John Lennon this month.)

I am posting some photos and there are a lot of them so be warned if you are using dial up.  I'm putting them behind a cut for that reason.

If anyone on my LJ friend's list finds me over here and wants to friend this account, please do so.  I plan to post over here for a while until the cross-posting issues on LJ are fixed.  So, please friend this account so we can keep in contact.  I will be checking on posts on LJ and reading my friend's posts but I won't be commenting over there just to be safe.

Why do I feel like I'm hiding from the law?  LOL

Just to let you know, this journal is friends only and I will not be cross-posting this to any other sites.  Friend this journal if you want to be able to see future posts or if you just don't have anything better to do.  :  )

Or you can just enjoy reading this post over and over and over and over and...
